Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

But everyone does look the same in their floral dresses, denim jacket, cross body bag and white trainers!

I was mostly applauding the Groove Armada tbh, floral dresses are lovely but I'd look ridiculous in one!

No I love a floral dress and love that other people also love them

So did OP until she saw that other people were wearing them and now all of a sudden she thinks they make her look asexual and doesn’t like them 🤔

Perhaps they wore them better than she does and now she’s too embarrassed to wear them.

RosieMilkJug · 02/06/2023 09:16

There’s always this T Shirt dress. Great for Waitrose.

faffadoodledo · 02/06/2023 09:17

@Froffycoffee yes there's some mardy folk around who like to pick a spat I think. But what I found most disturbing was that I got stalked to another board where I regularly post.. a board which is very supportive and non judgmental about what women wear. Quite the opposite of this thread!
Thanks for your support on this crazy thread! X

Alternatives to a denim jacket? a jersey blazer- slim fit- e.g. from Whistles?
A bomber cut jacket- again in jersey or a silk fabric. Both available in lots of different colours.
But really, the denim jackets the least of the issues. It's the floral dresses that i dislike.
I do cringe a bit when I see my peers in the floral dress/ white trainers/ denim jacket uniform. I suspect they are middle aged women (my peers) who think it makes them look 'girly' and then think the trainers and denim jacket are a surprising and original foil to the girliness- trying to give the outfit an 'edge' by pairing 'girly' with 'casual/sporty/androgyny'. It's become a cliche, a watered down version of what you might have seen in a fashion magazine 10 years ago of a model in a huge tulle skirt and a jumper and tough boots. And when it has spread through the entire female population, it is formulaic and tired.

Bit of an over thinker? Most people probably just pull on something they like and have seen others wear.

I love them, just not on me. Very few dresses suit me.

I saw one dress the other day and it’s exactly what I’m looking for, I don’t know how to go about finding one.
they are like those dresses we wore in the 80’s, short sleeves, t-shirt material, to the knee, very plain, maybe striped with a rope around the waist. I absolutely love those dresses!

I have one of these, although it is vintage and actually from the 80s. I love it.

Huh?

different hair cuts, hair colour, faces, heights, body shapes, accessories… I could go on

But they still look all the same. no matter what the hairstyle etc, no individuality at all, just a sea of white trainers and floral dresses.

I totally agree OP. Long flowery dress with trainers and a small jacket became a summer uniform a couple of years ago and became a bit of a cliche, almost dated. I’m so surprised to see them back in the shops again this summer. Fashion normally moves on.

In the early 70’s, manufacturers tried to introduce the midi skirt.

But women wanted to keep wearing mini’s and manufacturers were left with piles of unsold stock. It reappeared later in the 70’s.

The point is, they are being sold as people keep wanting them and aren’t bored of them. I’ve always liked dresses. But for ages they were knee length or above which a lot of people don’t like. I think it’s the fact that they cover your knees which is leading to the on going popularity.

ArabeIIaScott · 02/06/2023 09:22

It’s a bit like that moment in Devil Wears Prada where Andie is saying she doesn’t get it, it’s just a sweater (in her words) and she gets told …!

'I don't find wading birds interesting/important, they're just wildlife.'
'Well I know ALL ABOUT herons and here is detailed information on their mating habits, plumage and diet, you fool'

Was always my impression of that scene.

Quitelikeacatslife · 02/06/2023 09:22

I like them, and care not a jot if it's a cliche. It (that look) has enabled me to go out feeling cool in summer comfortable and wear comfy trainers , not worrying about being sexual all the time 😆

Weddingpuzzle · 02/06/2023 09:23

I am really lucky in that DP makes my clothes (he has just finished my wedding dress) so I can choose a pattern that is pretty 'norm' and change it up a bit with the fabric. I second whoever said psychedelic prints. My whole sartorial life at the moment is based on my granny's tea towels when I was a kid.

But ho doesn't love a floaty long skirt, fitted at the top and decent sleeves to cover if you want? I think (but I might be wrong) that pear shape is the most common shape for women in this country so people are surely just dressing to their shape? At least we are moving past the crop top and leggings stage - those camel coloured leggings throw me for a loop all the time Grin

😂😂 (i love plimsolls. Where do you get yours from?)

This thread has gone a bit batty...

I've got a few like this from Next and George. Used to have Boden ones but they've not last well. The George ones are particularly good as they go to my knee, the Next one is mid thigh.

Travelling on foot is so ubiquitous. When I was out about today everyone was on foot. Using one foot doesn't make you special! I propel my body by handstands and I find it so much fresher

madeinmanc · 02/06/2023 00:20

Bland, that was the word I was looking for. In spite of all their colour and patterns. The Coldplay of the dress world.

Harsh but brilliant
That said Coldplay Live last year were amazing

nobodysdaughternow · 02/06/2023 09:28

This is just the way of things isn't it? It is how human beings operate. We all follow and want the thing which is 'now' and 'fashionable'.

I think you are put off floral dresses because you thought you were setting a trend rather than following one?

If you feel good in them, that's all that matters.

Exactly, they just like it I would imagine.

My favourites at the moment are Superga 2950 COTU as they have a slightly lower sole than standard supergas like standard plimsolls but really comfy.

So bizarre.

do you think all men “look the same” when they wear shorts and t shirt? Or trousers and shirt?

Justalittlebitduckling · 02/06/2023 09:30

I think an easy way to keep the same ease of dressing and feeling but be slightly different is a jumpsuit or a more interesting non-floral print on the dress.

I don't get how some people on here are being so snide and stuck up about women simply liking wearing comfy clothes! Who cares if they like trainers and floral dresses, how sad to be so snide about it.

Met my MIL the other day for lunch and even she said she had the ‘retired ladies uniform’ on. She had stood at a large London station and said all the ladies over 60 had the same hair style, a flowery dress, white trainers and denim jacket!

What is the hairstyle? Curious as I am retired?

Ha ha @Anoisagusaris You call me a "thundering sneering bitch" for trying to thoughtfully articulate my fashion preferences/ dislikes! It's not personal, you know.....Seems I hit a nerve.

Myjobisanightmare · 02/06/2023 09:38

Pack up your dresses for a hol up north you’ll not see any floral midi dresses with white trainers
