I've never worn a dress and a pair of trainers

I can't be the only one?

Maybe it's my age (55)?
Maybe it's because I don't wear dresses massively often and prefer to wear sandals or other shoes.

It's weird because the way people talk about dresses and trainers (white or otherwise) on here (and topped off with a denim jacket) you'd have thought people wore this combo for decades, nay centuries. I'm sure it's been less then a decade?

Maybe I just go around with my eyes shut?

Anyway, what other things have you never worn that seem to be a Mumsnet staple? Skinny jeans maybe? Or a beauty thing?

Me either
I hate skinny jeans

I have never done anything to my eyebrows
I have never had anything waxed

mdinbc · 09/05/2023 23:48

Dresses with runners are not a thing here in Canada. I have not once seen it.

I never liked skinny jeans on me, but ok for others.

Never wore a cold shoulder top, they just seem silly to me.

BarryShitpea · 09/05/2023 23:50

It's not a recent thing, I'm a similar age and we wore converse with dresses in the 80s and Gazelles or Samba in the 90s. Nike Cortez in the 2000s and AF1 more recently. I haven't owned a pair of sandals since I was about 10 😂

We bleached our own denim in the 80s 🙈

Sunnycornwallanddevon · 09/05/2023 23:57

I've got a pair of Gazelles that I'm hoping to wear with a dress in the summer and I'm in my 50's! Happy days indeed

tobee · 10/05/2023 00:04

Ooh interesting answers!

When I say age I don't mean I'm too old I just mean maybe it wasn't a fashion thing when I was more into dresses? (I kind of went off dresses when I had heavy periods but have had hysterectomy now but you don't want to know about that.) Although @BarryShitpea says we did! Maybe I just have a terrible memory.

I have some gazelles and some bullet blaze etc but just never put them together!

I've never worn a dress and trainers, but in my case because I don't own trainers. I wear dresses almost all the time.

I last wore a denim jacket, with anything, around 1995 and last wore jeans around 1991. Denim jackets over long, floral dresses were a very big thing early 1990s.

I've never had my eyebrows done or had a manicure. I once had a facial and hated it.

TheOGCCL · 10/05/2023 00:13

I’ve never worn a dress with trainers either. I only have one dress which is very formal. I find dresses accentuate my stomach and they just feel fussy.boots. I don’t like tights or bare legs.

I’m not a massive fan of trainers, I have an innate tendency to look incredibly scruffy and so prefer sandals/ballet pumps/boots.

I don’t wear anything that shows my shoulders and never have.

AliceMcK · 10/05/2023 00:15

Late 40s here, I have started to. Weight gain and health issues mean I can no longer wear heals and I don’t like flat shoes or sandals. I bought a pair of cheap white trainers to try it about 2 years ago and I’m converted. The dress has to be the right length though, too long and it just looks silly on me and I need the trainers to give me a little height.

I bought a pair of gold shoes, not quite trainers, I think they are called skate shoes, anyway they look nice with a dress, not quite a trainer but still very comfortable to wear.

Skiiny jeans I was briefly ok with, but again weight gain put me off, I’m happy that baggy/ straight, flared and high waisted jeans are back. I only ever owned 1 pair of jeans back in the 90s skinny white ones, I never wore casual jeans until about 15 years ago and trainers in the last 10 years. My whole wardrobe and style has changed in the last 10years becoming a SAHM I far more casual than I ever was before.

NatashaDancing · 10/05/2023 00:15

I've never owned a leather jacket.

tobee · 10/05/2023 00:19

Tell you what I've never worn ballet pumps before. (While not wearing a leotard). My feet are stupid, wide square things (like overgrown babies feet) with high arches and ballet pumps look rubbish on me.

Very Shock that people are saying ballet pumps are back. They took forever to go last time and were constantly being touted by everyone!

I’ve never worn a dress and trainers either. It’s also not a thing in Australia. Despite retailers and media trying to make it happen, I just don’t see it often in real life. I wear dresses often, but with sandals in summer or boots in winter. And trainers with jeans only.

Growlybear83 · 10/05/2023 00:35

I'm in my 60s and I've never worn trainers with a dress or skirt. I think trainers are for wearing with jeans or trousers and look ridiculous with dresses. It's something I've only seen in the last few years. I don't wear skinny jeans either as they don't suit me - I feel much more comfortable in straight leg jeans.

I spend quite a lot on clothes but in other ways I'm very low maintenance. I had my legs waxed once and couldn't believe the pain; I shaved for a few years after that but now I'm older I get very little hair on my legs and don't shave any more. I do pluck my eyebrows occasionally but they don't grow much now either. I've never had a manicure or facial either and have absolutely hated the massages I've had in the past. I also haven't been to a hairdresser in years - I've got waist length hair which I trim myself, and I love the colour now it's got quite a bit of grey in it😆

tobee · 10/05/2023 00:43

I love a massage and quite like a facial but they always ruin it by finishing off with black head extraction ow ow owww

I've never worn the ubiquitous floral midi dress / white trainers / denim or leather jacket.

In fact I don't own any of those items.

I do wear trainers. I have veja /ba&sh collabs & novesta & new balance. I wear them with wide leg jeans, slim tapered cigarette pants, chinos or cropped wide leg trousers.

I don't own a single floral dress & habd no interest in them although I do have a number of lovely dresses they're mainly plain patterns

I detest biker jackets & think they've become a cliche & rarely, if ever, look good on anyone. Same with denim jackets. I last wore one in the 2000s

They never went away. You don't have to wear them.

Jumpsuits - they're always being suggested on here as the solution to everything. I very rarely see them in real life.

I don't have any "nice tops" either.

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2023 01:12

Me neither. Nobody round here wears them either.

tobee · 10/05/2023 01:26

True @NatashaDancing. For a long time I thought I must be just not buying the right ones and frequently tried them and took them back.

tobee · 10/05/2023 01:28

None of these I have a problem with on other people. They just don't seem to be a thing for me! Smile

It feels like eternity. That look really needs to go away.

BuffyTheCat · 10/05/2023 01:29

I’m a similar age and I quite like a floral dress with white trainers and a denim jacket. I just find it comfortable, especially a when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Can’t get the hang of jumpsuits though. Or wide leg jeans. And I’ve never had anything done to my eyebrows.

caringcarer · 10/05/2023 01:41

Neither have I. I do wear dresses especially in the summer but with strappy sandals and medium heels. I only wear trainers for the gym or when wearing jeans.

4LeafClover21 · 10/05/2023 01:47

I've been living in leggings since 2006. I can't stand jeans anymore. And I can't get my head around trainers with a dress. It just seems like it should be illegal. Different strokes for different folks 🤷

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/05/2023 01:54

I'm in my mid 50s and wear dresses with trainers. I don't own a denim.jacket though.

I love trainers, they are so comfortable. I also love skinny jeans. I'm not very trendy though.

Can't see the point of jumpsuits.
