I've never worn a dress and a pair of trainers

I can't be the only one?

Maybe it's my age (55)?
Maybe it's because I don't wear dresses massively often and prefer to wear sandals or other shoes.

It's weird because the way people talk about dresses and trainers (white or otherwise) on here (and topped off with a denim jacket) you'd have thought people wore this combo for decades, nay centuries. I'm sure it's been less then a decade?

Maybe I just go around with my eyes shut?

Anyway, what other things have you never worn that seem to be a Mumsnet staple? Skinny jeans maybe? Or a beauty thing?

I was in the London office last week. Wore a skater style Hobbs dress with nude stocking and white Vans. I had patent high heels in my bag to switch into but didn't bother in the end.

I love trainers and dresses, but I also love high heels. I get fewer opportunities to wear heels sadly so usually take them, but I'm recovering/suffering from the after effects of COVID and anything that reduces unnecessary energy output is a positive right now.

Late 30s, if that matters

Catspyjamas17 · 10/05/2023 09:37

I am 47 and have worn dresses with trainers since about 1996. Swapped Doc Marten Boots for trainers. Though I used to wear smart shoes at work - just changed them when I got in as it was far more comfortable to commute in trainers. I tend to just wear the pumps at work now most of the time. And my dresses are a bit longer than the ones I wore in 1996.

Dontcallmescarface · 10/05/2023 09:41

I've never worn a dress with trainers...probably because I don't own a dress or trainers.

slowquickstep · 10/05/2023 09:43

I don't wear dresses but i do like other in the dress/white trainer combination. Cold shoulder tops give me the ick, i love boot cut jeans but live in jeggings as i can put my wellies on without an hassle.

shows lack of imagination in putting an outfit together

Yeah, because picking a pair of sandals needs SO much creativity and imagination 😂😂

Just the little chuckle I needed this morning, thanks Soup 😂

I distinctly remember wearing a pair of blue gazelles with a one shoulder blue and black full length stretchy dress when I was at uni. So about 1995.

I do wear my terminally unsexy but incredibly comfy black jersey harem trousers ALL the time when I'm at home or not working.

When I do leave the house though, I like my dresses. And pumps (called trainers but I wouldn't do any exercise other than walking a bit in them!)

I do like my tent dress (https://muthahoodgoods.com/collections/new-in/products/foxglove-floral-maxi-dress?variant=43986225398080 with white pumps (bit like these https://www.shoezone.com/Products/S-Oliver-Womens-White-Slip-On-Canvas-160032) and I do have a denim jacket to go with it. https://www.tkmaxx.com/uk/en/women/clothing/jackets+coats/deep-blue-denim-jacket/p/06415776

So I guess I am pretty conformist in that way!

thedevilinablackdress · 10/05/2023 10:38

3/10 @Skybluepinky

coffeeschmoffee · 10/05/2023 10:39

I love a dress with trainers! Its my go to from this time of year through to early Oct. I'm short so I tend to go with mini dresses - either skater style or shirt dresses. I feel great in this look, wear it for work, going out, everything.

Brefugee · 10/05/2023 10:39

I'm ancient and my uniform since my school days has been some kind of dress/skirt (usually flowy long ones) with thick tights & docs in the winter and with chucks in summer (sometimes hi-tops, sometimes the shoes). Jackets have been everything from biker jackets, denim jackets to blazers depending on season/occasion.

SusieKin · 10/05/2023 10:41

Me neither. I hate wearing trainers/sports shoes for anything other than sports.

Bogggle · 10/05/2023 10:43

I'm guessing by their typing that Skyblue is probably about 12 years old and thinks anyone over the age of 25 is near death

ETimport · 10/05/2023 10:49

I've never worn the trainers/floral dress/denim jacket combo. I like the look, and that it seems to be worn by all ages (late 30s onward anyway), but it wouldn't suit me.

I don't think ballet flats ever went out.

ETimport · 10/05/2023 10:52

Late 20s not 30s.

mastertomsmum · 10/05/2023 08:57

annielou55 we sound similar. I’m 5ft 9 and find wearing heels makes me feel too tall. I own several maxi dresses and one jumpsuit and the all look midaxi length on me. I also have long arms and jackets/blazers make me look like an escapee from a Dickens novel.

Bootcut jeans era was a nightmare, flappy ankle hell and - frankly - if they are just not very flary flares and felt like a non fashion to me.

@mastertomsmum Ha! Yes to the chimp arms as well. Looks like I’ve outgrown most coats like I’m wearing hand me downs.

Some of the more wider leg jumpsuits are also a bit flappy around the mid calf area.

Any ideas on alternatives for the taller/longer than average leg length among us?

ladymactíre · 10/05/2023 11:02

I don't wear trainers unless I go for a walk. I haven't worn dress/trainers or jeans/trainers since I was a teenager - many years ago!
At that time in my country it was a statement to own white trainers, specially if they were brand [puma, adidas,...]. It was a precious possession, well taken care off, to keep the whiteness pristine 😁Jeans were hard to come by as well and very expensive too. So jeans and white trainers was super-cool 😂
Now I wear jeans almost daily, but with shoes or boots.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 10/05/2023 11:05

I only really wear dresses when it's hot or it's a dressy occasion. When it's hot I wear sandals because I hate having sweaty feet and obviously I wouldn't wear trainers for a dressy occasion, so I've never worn trainers with dresses either. I don't think it's a bad look though. I did used to wear a denim jacket with a flowery dress, but that was back in the 1980s. Grin

TeaAndTwoSugars · 10/05/2023 11:11

I wear dresses with trainers in the summer and on holiday as we tend to do a lot of walking, I cant keep up in sandals or heels.
For going out somewhere nice and if I know I'm only going to be in the car I will wear them with nicer shoes.
I value my comfort more over my appearance (I have experienced too many blisters and aching feet for wearing inappropriate shoes). Grin

Anaemiafog · 10/05/2023 11:16

I don't care for high fashion (I'm 50) but M&S have some lovely floral maxi dresses that suit me. It's been too cold to wear any form of sandals so I love pairing them with white converse high tops.
Being underweight with a bmi of 16 (illness, not an ED) this combo hides a multitude of sins.

TheDogsMother · 10/05/2023 11:26

I'm nearly 60 and very much in the dress/trainer/denim or biker jacket camp. It's easy to wear and I think it looks nice on me. M & S have had some great dresses over the last couple of years.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 10/05/2023 11:32

Am wfh today and when I popped out earlier, spotted Esme (from Sewing Bee) who was wearing a dress, denim jacket and trainers. While her jacket was longer and a different shape to the more typical denim jackets, it was still a denim jacket. Her trainers were black, but still trainers. I see her lot (we live within a few hundred metres of each other) and she never looks less than immaculate.

I only wear trainers at the gym, but do wear dresses with white converse hi tops and Nike mid blazer '77, mostly because I live in the middle of zone 1 and walk everywhere. For a smarter look, I have a pair of Robert Clergerie white leather Derbies. I wear flats rather than ballerinas, and a variety of heels too (and am guilty of having a capacious tote to keep the higher heels in while en route in my converse). I also wear a lot of denim and have several denim jackets, but only one of them is the more typical style. My last purchase was a Toteme denim car coat. What I love most about denim is that it dresses things down. For reasons unknown, I always look more dressed up than I actually am.

There's a reason the combination of a dress, denim jacket and trainers is a modern staple (something I've worn since my late teens) and it's because it's easy, something to throw on without much thought. What gets boring is when the items themselves don't evolve, so it's essential to constant update the individual items.

QuintanaRoo · 10/05/2023 11:45

I'm 46yo and have been wearing trainers with dresses for medical necessity mainly for around 20 years, certainly over 15. It did not used to be trendy. I used to feel quite self conscious. So I'm over the moon now it's trendy and I look like a fashionista. 😆

Though probably soon it won't be trendy and then I will look dated, which is maybe worse than previously when I was just odd!

Sisisimone · 10/05/2023 12:04

BarryShitpea · 09/05/2023 23:50

It's not a recent thing, I'm a similar age and we wore converse with dresses in the 80s and Gazelles or Samba in the 90s. Nike Cortez in the 2000s and AF1 more recently. I haven't owned a pair of sandals since I was about 10 😂

We bleached our own denim in the 80s 🙈

Same. Loved my little slip dresses with my maroon gazelles in the 90s. And yes! The memories have just come flooding back of me bleaching my jeans in the sink 😂

We also wore skinny jeans in the 80s, we called them stretch jeans. I remember taking in pairs of normal jeans on my mums sewing machine to make them extra tight!

I must admit though I've never worn the floral midi/white trainer/ denim jacket combo that is talked of so much on MN

clpsmum · 10/05/2023 12:13

Me neither it looks ridiculous imo
