I've never worn a dress and a pair of trainers

I can't be the only one?

Maybe it's my age (55)?
Maybe it's because I don't wear dresses massively often and prefer to wear sandals or other shoes.

It's weird because the way people talk about dresses and trainers (white or otherwise) on here (and topped off with a denim jacket) you'd have thought people wore this combo for decades, nay centuries. I'm sure it's been less then a decade?

Maybe I just go around with my eyes shut?

Anyway, what other things have you never worn that seem to be a Mumsnet staple? Skinny jeans maybe? Or a beauty thing?

I must be very unfashionable as I only started wearing dresses with trainers and a cropped denim jacket last summer 🤷🏻‍♀️. I quite like the look so will be wearing again this summer …….but would wear with sandals (low heels) for “dressy”.

I can’t get on with skinny jeans and wear straight or slim leg. Usually get them in M&S or Next as am 5 ft 9, with 33 inch inside leg ( have a short body). Black skinny jeans make me look like Russell Brand.

Love a jumpsuit but they inevitably look 3/4 length or ankle grazer at best on me, even the tall range.

Haven’t worn heels since around mid 90s as don’t like towering over people.

I have a jumpsuit but never worn it. The hassle of going to the loo. Exhausting.

eloquent · 10/05/2023 02:38

I'm 36 and have never worn a dress with trainers!

lakesummer · 10/05/2023 03:04

I really like jumpsuits and trainers. I like owning dresses but not actually wearing them. So I've never worn dresses and trainers together.

I've never had Botox despite my manager explaining my work wellness bonus would cover it !! ( USA)

lakesummer · 10/05/2023 03:04

Late 40's

Riapia · 10/05/2023 03:46

I’ve never been sporty so I’ve never owned a pair of trainers. Never needed them.

PerryMenno · 10/05/2023 03:58

Dresses and trainers were most definitely a thing in my part of Australia but it's finished now, I didn't see much of it in the summer just gone. Everyone was in short shorts with a boxy top or wide legged pants with a crop top. Trainers or Birkenstocks.

IndianSummer78 · 10/05/2023 04:07

I was doing it in 1995 🤷

I'm 56.

I don't think I've done the dress with trainers but I have certainly done docs, dress and denim - very common in the 1990s.

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 10/05/2023 05:24

Mid 50s here.

The only trainers I own are actual running onesthat I haven't run in for years

I find trainers really uncomfortable. So no, I have never done dress snd trainers either. You are not alone, OP.

I’ve never worn a dress and trainers either. It’s also not a thing in Australia. Despite retailers and media trying to make it happen, I just don’t see it often in real life. I wear dresses often, but with sandals in summer or boots in winter. And trainers with jeans only.

Is this a climate thing ? There are few days in an English Summer where sandals are a practical option.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 10/05/2023 05:36

I love a dress with nice, bright white, slightly platformy, non branded trainers.

I am very pale and have ugly feet so the less flesh on the display the better but I benefit in the heat from the breeze under my dress! I can also walk for miles in the hot weather in trainers, I don’t find sandals good for sight seeing unless they are also ugly, like Merrell ones. Ugly sandals on my ugly feet? No thanks.

isthismylifenow · 10/05/2023 05:57

Also in the southern hemisphere and the trainer's with dress has not taken off here either.

I collected someone from the airport recently so went inside to wait for them to walk through into arrivals. It was a BA flight. I would have known it was a BA flight anyway because all the mid age woman seemed to be dressed the same.

Even the men actually. They all seemed to be wearing the same Adidas shoes. Not sure which they are, but you know it was obvious if my ds (who doesn't notice these sorts of things ) even commented.

There are so many more nice sandal options than Merrells. Which here are hiking attire.

Personally I always buy leather, I like Timberland but do have unbranded ones. They have to have a back strap and straps over the top of the foot to fit well. I never ever buy sandals online. I have to try them on and if they are not comfy right away, I don't buy them. Life is too short to be wearing in shoes I think.

Changingplace · 10/05/2023 06:05

I love a dress with trainers, and I’ve had the same denim jacket since about 2000 and couldn’t less.

I love a jumpsuit too!

I’ve never worn anything or even tried on anything from Boden, in fact I’d never even heard of the brand until I came on here but people go on about it all the time like it’s some kind of uniform!

Mutabiliss · 10/05/2023 06:07

I wore dresses with Converse in the 90s, but my poor middle aged feet can't cope with Converse anymore and most trainers are hideously ugly, so I don't wear them except for actual exercise. I have quite big feet for my height (size 7, 5'5) and trainers just make them look enormous. I usually wear ballet flats or flat sandals, Saltwater or Birkenstock style.

It's really annoying me that all casual shoes/trainers have such ugly thick soles at the moment. I want my feet to look smaller!

I do think a midi dress with trainers and a denim jacket just suits British weather perfectly, which might be why it's taken off here more than elsewhere.

AuntieMarys · 10/05/2023 06:50

I don't wear dresses or skirts at all...haven't for about 40 years.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 10/05/2023 06:52

I’m 52 and wear the obligatory dress trainers and denim jacket….just like I did in the 90s when I was in my mid 20s….

XBealtaine · 10/05/2023 06:56

Me neither. Not far off yr age @tobee but I'm only 5'1' and a bit overweight and I'd look shorter and fatter if I wore a dress with runners. I'll steer clear of that jaded look!

SquashPenguin · 10/05/2023 07:03

I’ve never worn a dress with trainers, I think it looks really frumpy and boring.

CeliaCanth · 10/05/2023 07:17

I’ve only worn dress and trainers when commuting. Always changed into more formal shoes when at my desk. I’d just feel too - clumpy, I suppose - even with a casual dress/on a casual occasion.

jay55 · 10/05/2023 07:19

I did it as a teen at festivals 30 years ago so not that recent. Adidas gazelles or vans were worn with everything when too hot for doc martens.

My dresses are now longer and my trainers brighter.

Theelephantinthecastle · 10/05/2023 07:21

I don't do dresses with trainers either - I really don't like the look, I guess I just grew up with the idea that you wear "nice" i.e. vaguely smart shoes or sandals with dresses.

I also don't do midi length either - I am short and it just never looks right on me, I look dumpy

Stravaig · 10/05/2023 07:22

I don't wear trainers at all, something about the proportions seems all wrong to me. However I do wear skirts and dresses with ankle boots, walking boots, wellies, barefoot running shoes, climbing approach shoes - so I figure the less said the better!

I've never owned any form of blazer, trench coat or suit jacket. It's wonky handknits, gilets and waterproof jackets instead.

I don't do handbags. Let's talk pockets, rucsacs and travel bags.

I use toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, conditioner. Lip balm if needed. Wide toothed wooden comb when I have to. Last professional haircut was 9 years ago. That's it.

Style and Beauty threads are sometimes a bit of an anthropological study to me, figure out what all these strange woman beings are doing, given I supposedly am one 🤣

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 10/05/2023 07:24

For me dresses are either a winter thing , so I wear with thick Tights and boots, or a holiday thing and I wear with sandals. I've tried trainers and a summer dress but I think it just looks odd. But I am short and fat, maybe that's it
