I've never worn a dress and a pair of trainers

I can't be the only one?

Maybe it's my age (55)?
Maybe it's because I don't wear dresses massively often and prefer to wear sandals or other shoes.

It's weird because the way people talk about dresses and trainers (white or otherwise) on here (and topped off with a denim jacket) you'd have thought people wore this combo for decades, nay centuries. I'm sure it's been less then a decade?

Maybe I just go around with my eyes shut?

Anyway, what other things have you never worn that seem to be a Mumsnet staple? Skinny jeans maybe? Or a beauty thing?

I hate that look its so dull and shows lack of imagination in putting an outfit together. I don't suit long dresses being short, hate floral, denim jackets are stiff and uncomfortable and trainers are fugly and should only be worn for sports.

Surely trainers should only be worn by people who want to wear trainers?

What really demonstrates a lack of imagination is not realising that people have different tastes.

SybilWrites · 10/05/2023 13:58

I'm 52 - I can't remember what I wore on my feet in the 90s/early 2000s, but it wasn't trainers (unless I was doing sport). I think I did have lots of ballet pumps/sandals/ankle boots. I did wear the Ash high tops that was the mum uniform then I think.

Anyway, I wear trainers all the time now, but don't have the floral dress part of the uniform. I generally wear sandals with dresses.

Catspyjamas17 · 10/05/2023 15:59

A lot of trainers (certainly more the pumps/plimsolls type) are definitely made as casual footwear, not for doing sport in.

I wear different trainers in the gym and for running.

Brefugee · 10/05/2023 16:12

I don't wear floral dresses - most of mine are black, tbh - and i don't own any all-white trainers because i have big feet, so chucks are pretty good at being classic and breaking up the size of my feet.

I think people should be comfortable - fashion is a bit of extra dressing up if you want. I have some ballet flats too, but i don't often wear them, but WFH will do that to you.

Darklane · 10/05/2023 16:25

I don’t wear dresses with trainers either. Think it’s a look only surpassed in ugliness by floral midi dresses with clumpy ankle boots like DMs
As for jumpsuits, surely the most useful way to acessorise those is with incontinence knickers.

thedevilinablackdress · 10/05/2023 16:48

Some really horrible sneery post on this thread. Surely people are able to express differences in sartorial preferences without resorting to insults.
The joy of style and fashion for me is in the variety of things I see people wearing, and that I can choose to wear.

You should probably consider doing your pelvic floor exercises if you think that.

I agree. If you don't like a type of look that is fine, but it's not fine to insult others who do. Those who do the sneering seem to think it makes them appear superior - I've news for you, it doesn't. I like to see different looks on people, how dull it would be if we all wore the same clothes.

limoncello23 · 10/05/2023 21:48

I think the reason you see it recommended so much on mumsnet is that it's an easy outfit formula to remember, is currently fashionable, and doesn't rely on very specific items.

It used to be that the frequently recommended outfit formula was breton striped top, skinny jeans, a blazer and scarf. Very "10+ years ago" I guess.

That’s what I wear on the days I’m not wearing my floral dress with denim jacket and trainers Grin

Me either
I hate skinny jeans

I have never done anything to my eyebrows
I have never had anything waxed

Brilliant username! Glooooriaaaaa

Mine is wedge heeled sandals or espadrilles. Can’t imagine it’s comfy standing on all that rope. They’re just not my style.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 10/05/2023 22:23

One of my favourite looks (from the nineties but I’ve seen it quite a lot lately) is a short skirt, black 40 denier tights and trainers. Trouble is, although my legs are decent, they’re muscular and I’m only 5’1 so that look doesn’t suit me.

tobee · 10/05/2023 23:15

I'm glad I started this thread. I've just been catching up and enjoying the replies.

As for sneery comments that's a shame; style & beauty has gone a bit that way of late.

I was just wondering why I've never worn this combo and started the thread.

I read the thread title and thought 'that's a bit niche for an AMA' Grin

Lol!

There are so many more nice sandal options than Merrells. Which here are hiking attire.

Personally I always buy leather, I like Timberland but do have unbranded ones. They have to have a back strap and straps over the top of the foot to fit well. I never ever buy sandals online. I have to try them on and if they are not comfy right away, I don't buy them. Life is too short to be wearing in shoes I think.

I’m well aware Merrell are a hiking brand, personally I also buy leather, and
personally I find Timberland footwear uglier than my feet, but thank you for your ever so helpful opinions, especially those about life being too short to wear shoes 🙄- I will continue to wear my lovely, comfortable, white trainers rather than opting for these monstrosities which would look far more absurd with a long floaty dress than white trainers.

I've never worn a midi dress or a midi skirt, they make me look frumpy. All my dresses and skirts are over the knee, just above or maxi.

I've done converse with a dress a couple of times but I prefer sandals (not the big clumpy ones that are fashionable but nice toe post ones or gladiators).

Wow, that was a rather snippy reply.

Life isn't too short to wear shoes, that is not what I said.

And as for the link you posted, of course you went all out to find the most unflattering of styles, just to prove a point.

I also wear leather Merrell sandals in summer, to work and out and about. They look nothing like hiking sandals, but are extremely comfortable for someone like me who walks everywhere.

notanicepersonapparently · 11/05/2023 06:55

I’ve really loved wearing trainers and a midi or maxi dress the last few years. I walk a lot and basically my feet hate sandals. Over a certain temperature my feet sweat and the edges of the straps rub the skin right off my feet. I’ve spent so many years carrying packets of plasters with me everywhere I went, to patch up my feet enough to be able to limp home. It’s miserable.

MultipleVeganPies · 11/05/2023 07:55

@Kittensat36 feminine from the knee up but ass-kicking from the knee down is my favourite look 😁 That is exactly the look I love. But I prefer a mini, knee length or maxi skirt

midi dresses are a style that I let pass me by. I know it is everywhere, but somehow I always look like the vicar’s wife on her way to a tea party…. Not sure why! I just cannot wear a midi dress.

It was a link to all the Timberland sandals, so I imagine the poster simply looked at the sandal section on their website. Hardly "all out". Timberland themselves chose the display order.

I really didn't intend to argue about Timberland sandals.

I am not in the UK and do not have these options available to me as per the uk site. I agree some of the options wouldn't pair very well with the floral dress, but if I scroll down, there are really some nice ones 😀

Apologies if I came across in the wrong manner.

StarlightLady · 11/05/2023 12:54

I'm in my 40s and tend to live in dresses, sometimes skirts and rarely wear trousers or jeans other than on freezing cold days or doing "non skirt appropriate" jobs. I don't dowels though and never considered it unusual to wear trainers with them.
