Need to up my "dressing for breakfast on holiday " game

We're off to Sorrento this summer (first abroad jaunt since before covid) and whilst not a posh place it's a bit smarter than our usual AI choice hotel.

We'll be either lazing by the pool or going into town for a walk by day, the odd trip so whilst not a dressy holiday per say I think I need something more substantial than a floaty dress over a bikini for breakfast kind of outfit.

I'm still thinking dresses as they are easy and if I choose carefully will suit different parts of the day and activities.

Can anyone recommend some good online places to look, probably top budget of £40ish. Also easy free returns a must - Cupshe have some lovely things but their returns aren't free for example.

Really need ideas as I'm going to be around chic Italians Confused

I've also been living with a concept that heretofore had no name for me, the Breakfast Dress! For me, this is something pull on and loose BUT it's for slipping on fresh out of bed in the morning, without a bra, so i can nip down to collect coffee to take back to the room or to go down to breakfast. Essentially it serves the function of a robe or pyjamas but in no way looks like a robe or pyjamas. I wear it with birkenstock arizona. Then i would go back to the room to shower and dress for the dead.

Day!

Oh I've tickled myself 😂

I've just seen these too, they're great H & M dresses, I bought these in various colours last year and they're doing them again this year

Oooh where are you going? We've booked for August.
On holiday I just avoid 'buying for a holiday' sections in shops - pink and white striped r shirts with a random pineapple appliqué / loose, stretch waist trousers and just take stuff I have or wear lighter versions of it.
Dresses that are simple are great. I'm also going to get a spray tan this year. Love going to Italy, never felt awkward around Italian women, just up your grooming game really - brows, nails etc

OneFrenchEgg · 15/04/2023 10:54

Sant'Agnello has a lovely silver shop - bought several nice things last time we went

OldHouseLover · 15/04/2023 11:07

I too have a range of breakfast dresses 😀
I love to get up, wash my face & pull on a lovely dress to head down to breakfast in a hotel for some great people watching.

Over the past couple of years I've built up a small collection of them & I love a nice cotton sundress or a soft shirred Jersey dress. I've bought them in all sorts of places mostly in sales including Whistles, noa noa, Boden & mint velvet.

I like some of the dresses linked here but actually couldn't imagine wearing a long sleeved dress to breakfast in italy in July or August matter how pretty it was. I'd melt!

I don't do really bright colours too often either e so mine are more muted. I love navy, cream, green etc & I wear with birkenstocks

OldHouseLover · 15/04/2023 11:08

Sometimes I might wear that dress for the day ahead other times after breakfast I go back to the room & shower & dress in a different outfit & hang up my dress

Saw this in Next yesterday after reading this thread. I was able to tell my daughter very confidently "That's a breakfast dress"!

I'm stupidly pleased I've started this thread .... I saw it name checked on another yesterday and thought " she's talking about my thread"! Grin

Yes! This nails it for me. I've always fallen into this trap in previous years so I'm m instead trying to create a sub section in my normal summer wardrobe of things I may wear less (exception a heatwave)?at home but definitely still have their place here, IYSWIM? And emphasis on simple but smart

Part of my wardrobe is just clothes for a hot day, but them when I find them, they match my other things etc. It makes packing so much easier!

I wouldn't be surprised if the Daily Fail didn't pick this up - " Mumsnet starts new craze for something they're calling the 'Breakfast Dress'. But unbeknownst to fans of the popular parenting website, stars such as Catherine Zeta Jones have been rocking this look for DECADES"

Cut to grainy pictures of CZJ from 2006 wearing a linen sundress.

I’ve been to Sorrento a couple of times (once to meet a dear friend on honeymoon, I think in the hotel mentioned above- very nice) and it’s close to Positano on the Amalfi Coast. You’ll probably see offers for coach trips. Sorrento town caters strongly to British tourists, like football in the pubs and takeaway places. Just avoid those and look out for Pastiera Napoletana in the cake shops!

Theres a very recognizable “Positano Dress” style which includes gypsy skirts, puff sleeves, Bardot tops and loud prints. Sometimes lace appliqué and whole-dyed garment coloring.

A bit OTT once you’re home, except maybe for a summer barbecue…
Positano style

Wow some of those are gorgeous though! Admittedly the pretty backdrop helps and not just outside Asda Grin

I tried this on today but unfortunately the ruffle bit made my boobs look dreadful

You have literally described in these two posts how I intend to wear them!

You lot are all ace and I dragged DP round some shops this and after bribing him with a Greggs breakfast. I found x 2 dresses! Yay!

So a sound start although ideally I'd like another but I feel better now and also have a good idea of what's suiting me.

Off out in a mo but I'll post pics this evening.

That's nice Maple, perfect breakfast dress!

Rina66 · 15/04/2023 15:44

I sized up in the H & M dresses
@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz
I always find shirring looks better when it's less stretched and the skirt part is fuller on a bigger size too.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/04/2023 20:49

Inspired by this thread while buying bread I just picked this up. It goes with my stuff and I can wear with a little jacket or cardigan in the UK.

I saw that dress in the magazine it's lovely. To be fair I've a couple of beach dresses from George over the years and they are still going strong.
