Need to up my "dressing for breakfast on holiday " game

We're off to Sorrento this summer (first abroad jaunt since before covid) and whilst not a posh place it's a bit smarter than our usual AI choice hotel.

We'll be either lazing by the pool or going into town for a walk by day, the odd trip so whilst not a dressy holiday per say I think I need something more substantial than a floaty dress over a bikini for breakfast kind of outfit.

I'm still thinking dresses as they are easy and if I choose carefully will suit different parts of the day and activities.

Can anyone recommend some good online places to look, probably top budget of £40ish. Also easy free returns a must - Cupshe have some lovely things but their returns aren't free for example.

Really need ideas as I'm going to be around chic Italians Confused

Can you post a picture at all? That sounds lovely

Grrr I'm at work so can't until later but have drawn you a technical drawing quality (Grin) picture so it will be immediately unmistakable should you happen upon it in Primark. It was £22 if that helps.

Possibly the best MN diagram though!
Thanks Grin

Next has loads of midi/maxi options at the moment that could fit the bill, around £25-40. I've done a similar online shop this morning. Really surprised because I can't remember the last time I liked something from next!

I wouldn’t go for a walk in the day round a town in a sheer dress over a bikini, though!

I’d wear the same sort of little dresses I’d go out in the day in, to wear for breakfast.

//

That's what I'm looking for now though as currently my daytime "abroad " wardrobe is the floaty sheer things!

Glad I found this thread.

Im in my 50’s, plus size and going to Ibiza for the first time ever this year. I’m having a wardrobe wobble as our past few holidays have been in Vegas - so my wardrobe is overly filled with sequins 😁😁😁

I’ve just ordered that HMV dress for my holiday.
Plus three shorter tunic dresses to try 😁 I’d never have thought of HMV for plus size.

I don’t think HMV ever did any dresses 😜

Nicola Sturgeon has ruined that look for me

😂

I now want a 'breakfast dress'! I'm not even going on holiday this year but still want one!! I may search t shirt dress and see what I can find...

And just how "unwithit" I am!

I have lots of midi dresses from Next, Apricot etc that are perfect for hotel breakfasts. I also have a range in Autumn colours I wear for UK breaks in the Autumn and winter.

Sometimes I wear them in the evening too with pretty sandals and accessories.

I'm really confused by this thread. What is a breakfast dress? Don't you just get dressed in whatever your going to wear that day? Why do you need a dress just for breakfast?

It’s probably a step up from just pulling on a pair of shorts and a vest. I first encountered it on a holiday in a very nice hotel in Thailand. I felt very underdressed in my shorts and vest so sorted myself out thereafter.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 13/04/2023 17:15

Oh no! A breakfast dress is a must.

If you're going from breakfast to pool you want something that covers you up stylishly but it still easy to get on and off over your head for lunch/ swims etc. personally I can't be faffing with shorts/ T-shirts when I'm a bit sticky from swimming/ sun tan lotion etc.

Equally, a lot of cover ups designed for pool wear are way too flimsy to be decorous at breakfast time.

Hence the breakfast dress. ( I didn't know it had a name before this thread, but I'm here for it. )

PokemonPasta · 13/04/2023 17:34

Importantly, how does a breakfast dress relate to a school run dress?

That is a very interesting question as I had not considered the BD outside the realms of a breakfast buffet scenario.

I think you're good to go - sandals, big bag, sunglasses... it's nothing if not versatile!

Rina66 · 13/04/2023 17:59

I buy lots of the 'Made in Italy' clothing, they make perfect breakfast dresses and are never very expensive. I have the below cheesecloth shirt dress in various colours, I wear it as a dress for breakfast, a beach cover up and as a long jacket over shorts and a vest for evening. I also like off the shoulder dresses and tiered tunics. I've also got some wide leg V neck jersey jumpsuits with wide straps that are perfect for breakfast, just pull on.

I love to change about 4 times a day on holiday, I also have a capsule for I’ve had enough of the sun but want a sundowner and don’t want to get changed into my dinner clothes yet.

VimtoVimto · 13/04/2023 18:00

For our first holiday without children we stayed in a nice hotel in Malta. There was a group of about a dozen slightly older British people there. One of the ladies was a real Hyacinth Bucket type and you’d hear her complaining about standards regarding anyone who went to breakfast in shorts and a T-shirt.

Twilightstarbright · 13/04/2023 18:09

George at Asda has some great summer dresses that would make excellent breakfast dresses.

AltheaVestr1t · 13/04/2023 18:15

I would never have thought of buying dresses from M&S, but all of the ones posted here are lovely!

That is a very specific set of circumstances that I completely understand and applaud.

I went to Milan and Lake Como last year. The Italians aren’t as chic as you think lol. Most of them were wearing the same kind of clothes you see people wearing anywhere. Don’t stress too much. Unless you’re rich and going to be hanging out with the rich and fabulous, normal Italians dress like anyone else.
