I have a large wool wrap that has a very vaguely First Nation American pattern. I liked to wear it over a jumper with jeans and boots when it was chilly. One friend of DH’s saw me and asked me where I’d left Silver tied up. Someone else soon after exclaimed “It’s Clint Eastwood!”.

@SirChenjins - it’s so easy to fall foul of the thread police, isn’t it? I was even nervous saying that in my hip new single-breasted raincoat and ankle boots I looked like my mum c. 1978 in Dannimac and Moorland boots. Someone was bound to say,”You’re ridiculing older women? How dare you!”

Also I have said that Scandi chic sees me resembling Sandi Toksvig. ST seems an excellent person but, sorry not sorry, when you have imagined you are a Danish ceramicist it is dispiriting to see Sandi staring back from the mirror !

It's actually quite liberating to accept that I have worked hard to build those shoulders and arms, so yes, in sleevless tops I will proudly look like a Soviet Shot Putter.

Boobs, as other people have said, are still a challenge though.
Scoop neck blouse and knee lenght shirt. Expectation: cute and girly, while modest.
Reality: about to go for my evening shift at Oktoberfest, expecting a lot of tips.

I'm short and sturdy with a large bust, thick unruly hair and rosy cheeks. Anything with a waist makes me look like a wench serving tankards of ale, anything without a waist makes me look like the chairman of the WI serving victoria sponge.

I've just remembered the horror of my teens. I had a cream blazer which I loved.

In my mind: slightly louche elegance, perhaps drinking a cocktail at Raffles' Bar.

Reality: all the bad angles of Noël Coward. Without the songwriting talent.

Got my long hair cut short with a side swept fringe. Thought it was lovely.

I bought some new frames (thinking Thai time I'd move away from what I usually have and try some thing different) I thought they looked ok, walked through the door, showed my dh who said 'you look like Dame Edna Everage' now everytime I see myself in them, that's all I can see. I can't even afford a new pair

I bought a knock off Skims type of all-in-one. In my head I was of course all slim and smoothed out. In reality:

Always wanted long knee high tan suede boots and I had this vision in my head I was going to look amazing in a cream knitted dress with matching suede belt. So chic.First time I put them on DH asks me if I am going line dancing, second time where is my cowboy 🤠 hat. Boots and dress have never made it through the door yet.

Expectation-cool,feminine wafty and stylish
Reality-dp-you look just like Mr blobbys nana!

Once bought a short skirt and wore it with low-ish heels
As I was hoovering the lounge,the same dp walked in and told me I looked like Freddie Mercury in the I want to break free video

I bought a white shirt
Was meant to look all French and stylish
Dp-you look like a posh,lesbian riding woman

I was attacked at work and the bloke ripped out a chunk of my hair
Which meant that in the last heatwave,it felt like my scalp was overheating
So I bought a hat for protection from sunburn
Looking back at me in the mirror was my dad!
Not the look I was aiming for

I bought a white, straw trilby, obviously expecting to appear all Italian chic , so I was somewhat surprised to see a fishmonger staring back at me in the mirror.

When I was 16 (a long time ago) I spent my birthday money on a trip to a very cool hairdresser in the nearest city. I told them I wanted to look like Jimi Hendrix. They did their best: perm, silver streaks. But, for reference, I was a white, podgy school girl with straight mousy hair. After handing over what to me was a small fortune, I took myself off to the ladies room of a nearby department store and sobbed. Rather than the god of rock I looked like an ageing Shirley Temple. Not surprising really.
