Do you still wear leggings and if so - with what?

I was just sorting out my wardrobe over the weekend and realised I no longer have any leggings. I haven't worn them in a long time now, even around the house I wear wide legged jersey 'lounge pants' or pj bottoms.

Similarly I had no jeans at all until last month when I bought a pair of wide legged COS jeans.

There was a time when I wore leggings a lot, mainly under dresses / tunics.

It's funny how things come and go..

I do like leggings on occasion, mostly I wear them for lounging around the house with an oversized t-shirt, or when I go for a run but I do sometimes wear them in the summer too, always with an oversized t-shirt and Converse type plimsoll style trainers, though my current ones are CK (Calvin Klein). Speaking of CK, they do some nice leggings for indoors, I have a pair in black and grey. My running leggings are some navy blue ones from Ellesse.

guineverechypre · 20/03/2023 12:20

I don't own any leggings and never have. Other than gym leggings that is.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 20/03/2023 12:23

I live in them! Need to lose weight so I can go back to jeans, chinos etc.

notacooldad · 20/03/2023 12:24

Only for the gym or cycling.

Badger1970 · 20/03/2023 12:27

I wear loads! White Stuff do a ponte jegging called Jodie which is a really thick soft material and I live in them, with mostly Joe Brown tunics or kaftan type jackets (one hundred stars are great for these). And I've got far too many Woolover merino wool tunic jumpers that are fab (I go up a size) and wear with a nice scarf for work.

ZittiEBuoni · 20/03/2023 12:29

I used to wear them year round but realise I only have a couple of light pairs for summer now, and I tend to wear long loose dresses in summer instead of the tunics/leggings I spent the late 2000s/early 2010s in, so not sure I'll even be wearing those any more. OK with a long line linen shirt I guess.

If I am having a not leave the house day, then I will, failing that I put them on when I am in for the evening.

Invariably when I do pop out in them to JS or Waitrose I bump into someone I know, I only meet people out when I look like I was dressed in the dark by Oxfam’s leftovers. Grin

Still in my Maternity leggings I am 😆 always wear with a tshirt and chuck Taylor's or vans

Friendofdennis · 20/03/2023 12:32

I still wear my Marks and Spencer leggings in different colours ( fine cord) they are so comfortable and go with shirts, dresses and tunics. I’m not giving them up even if they are unfashionable. They balance out my body shape and at this time of year I am wearing them with long suede Fly boots. People tell me I look great in what I’m wearing and since I’m 5 10 and13 stone I want to consider my silhouette which is enhanced by leggings

GarlicGrace · 20/03/2023 12:40

I still live in them. Wear 'em with big jumpers or sweatshirts, long t-shirts and sometimes with short dresses.

There are some things (OK, a lot of things) I won't do just because fashion. I never bought any carrot-leg jeans because they looked stupid on slim, young women so they were going to make me look like a potato with two skewers stuck in the bottom. I got some wide-leg jeans as soon as they came back to the high street, having waited impatiently! I've likewise evaded trousers that stop short of the ankle; there's nothing about my ankles that merits obtrusive display, and nothing about my legs to suggest they'd look better for being visually chopped off three-quarters of the way down.

Strangely, leggings don't create a potato-on-sticks effect; I think because they fit so closely - legs in leggings look like legs. They're so bloody comfy, I don't think they'll ever really go away. I would like some floaty 'lounge pants' as mine have all fallen to bits - last time I looked, there was nothing decent in my price range. I'll get some when I see them, but I won't be giving up my stretchy leg sheaths for some time yet!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 20/03/2023 12:46

Mostly for the gym, but I have some for walking outdoors and also a black pair I'll wear with trainers or boots for travelling or if I just need to nip out for a few errands. Would never wear under dresses anymore or if I was going out anywhere properly.

Daffodilfrog · 20/03/2023 12:49

I have one pair of ponte leggings I still wear with a shirt dress or jumper dress .. used to wear them a lot more

Winemygoodenemy · 20/03/2023 12:49

I wear them to work in at home and lounge about. So comfy Baggy jumpers and t shirts. It’s jeans or dresses when leaving house and I have to look normal

OnTheThames · 20/03/2023 12:51

My weekend ‘going to the shops, park etc’ uniform is gym leggings, hoodie, trainers. I’m not saying I’m stylish, mind you! But it’s comfortable and I buy decent quality stuff so I don’t look like a complete tramp.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 20/03/2023 12:53

Where would we be without them ! That's what I say ! I wear leggings for dog walking, gardening, shopping. I wear good quality for going out and keep the old ones with bleach on for chores/dogwalking

Echobelly · 20/03/2023 12:56

I'm a child of the 80s and still like the long jumper/dress/tunic top and high boots combo!

I would never wear leggings without a top that covers my bum.

Allmarbleslost · 20/03/2023 12:57

I wear them with dresses in the winter - they're warmer than tights on my walk to work!

drspouse · 20/03/2023 13:03

I wear leggings quite a lot:
Under dresses/tunics if I'm going to the gym at lunchtime. I wear my gym leggings and boots, carry my trainers and clean leggings. Pop in the gym, scandalise everyone by taking off my dress and boots and starting the class, shower and change. Same for my regular Pilates class on my day off - tshirt under dress and leggings (I don't get sweaty in Pilates so then I can go for a coffee).
Under a baggy sweater for weekends, cropped leggings under a summer dress when it isn't quite warm enough for no tights (I hate sheer/beige nylons). Sometimes if the dress is the wrong length I push them up a bit but they still keep my thighs warm.

whoruntheworldgirls · 20/03/2023 13:05

I wear them with dresses in the winter, they're warmer than tights and less annoying.

LlynTegid · 20/03/2023 13:08

No, I like something with pockets.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/03/2023 13:12

I have running tight type leggings for exercise, but also a pair of the Spanx faux leather ones which I wear instead of trousers. I wear those with oversized sweatshirts or knits, and either knit socks over the top and chunky trainers, or black DM boots.

Spudlet · 20/03/2023 13:13

I wear them lots, always sport type ones as opposed to cotton ones. I have bright ones for running and exercising, black ones for work (sports related field), and a petrol blue pair for cycling and lounging when I don’t want to wear my loud ones. They all have a pocket large and stretchy enough for my phone and at least a car key. I wear them with a baggyish jumper on top if I’m not working or doing a sport of some kind.

CrumpetsandJammmm · 20/03/2023 13:14

Thick leggings yes, all the time, with DMs and baggy sweatshirts. It’s been my go to look this winter.

StaringAtTheWater · 20/03/2023 13:14

I wear leggings all the time - mainly with long jumpers, and skater and shift dresses. I can't bear how tights feel around my waist. I generally pair them with knee high boots, either flat or with a heel. I realise it's not at all fashionable, but both the 3/4 length big sleeved dresses, and the crop top & loose fit trouser combo look awful on my short apple shaped body.

crackofdoom · 20/03/2023 13:16

What on earth is wrong with wearing leggings under dresses?! I wear them in place of tights, which I find annoying. Same thing, just thicker.

(unless the legging/ dress combo that everyone hates is the 3/4 leggings, which I agree look terrible).
