Do you still wear leggings and if so - with what?

I was just sorting out my wardrobe over the weekend and realised I no longer have any leggings. I haven't worn them in a long time now, even around the house I wear wide legged jersey 'lounge pants' or pj bottoms.

Similarly I had no jeans at all until last month when I bought a pair of wide legged COS jeans.

There was a time when I wore leggings a lot, mainly under dresses / tunics.

It's funny how things come and go..

I wear them at weekends under dresses instead of tights.

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/03/2023 12:15

I wear them with socks instead of wearing tights. I can't be doing with the battle my feet and my waist have over every pair of tights I've ever tried (I'm not very tall either ).

LadyHenrique · 21/03/2023 12:20

long prairie dresses are the 'new' leggings when it comes to not facing weight gain. Much, much easier to hide in them, and they dont show visible expansion as leggings would. Leggings may have been stretchy but the mirror truth would have been ouch!

tatteddear · 21/03/2023 12:30

I wear them all the time with big oversized hoodies. I am a dog Walker and they are the most practical and comfy thing for that. Dry quick when wet, go into wellies, can equally wear with trainers when it's dry.

EggyBreads · 21/03/2023 12:33

@guineverechypre yep the all day ones and also the yoga ones. The power leggings are too restrictive for me!

EggyBreads · 21/03/2023 12:38

@PinkSyCo if you're triggered by the mention of Sweaty Betty maybe stay off the style and beauty board. You might stumble across a thread about Chanel bags and that will really ruin your day.

Oh you’re funny. 🙄 Actually I just don’t like snobs, which you are for mentioning the brand of leggings you wear when the thread isn’t about that.

StarlightLady · 21/03/2023 13:11

Leggings:- I wear my legs under mine 😂!

The yoga leggings are very comfortable!

StillMedusa · 21/03/2023 19:12

I wear gym or waterproof leggings (bloody brilliant) for dog walking...perfect for wellies or trainers
Uniqlo jeggings for work with long tops or long linen shirts ..also with trainers usually as I'm running after lots of small children!
I used to love jeans but since my last truly well fitting pair died I just can't find any I like!

PropellerDance · 21/03/2023 19:17

Yes I wear my leggings.

You'll get the over-50's saying no they are only for the gym and they wouldn't be seen dead in them and anybody who wears them are scum. But the fashion nowadays is leggings with oversized sweatshirt, so most young people will be wearing them. Plus they're much comfier than jeans! Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable - life is too short.

I'm more shocked that people wear tunics?!

PropellerDance · 21/03/2023 19:18

Also - wearing them with skirts or dresses is not a great look 😬

How old are you OP?

fellrunner85 · 21/03/2023 19:23

Exercise-type leggings I wear very day, for walking/yoga/gym/etc. Out of work, I basically live in gym kit.

I would never wear those cotton leggings that are always see through at the arse, and I'd never wear leggings with dresses etc. But gym ones are different IMO.

Unicornsaregreat · 21/03/2023 20:29

I wear thick high-waisted leggings all the time with bum-covering tops, high top trainers or walking style boots and chunky socks. I have various colours.

I do think putting those cheap thin black leggings under dresses is a bad look though. I remember my friend’s Uber-trendy sister wearing leggings under a denim skirt teamed with gold ballet pumps and thinking it was super -stylish. That was about 2001.

borntobequiet · 21/03/2023 21:09

Not necessarily. As mentioned upthread I wear them a great deal and have done so for approximately the last 40 years. I’m 70 this year. They’ve been more or less in and out of fashion for decades, always available because worn by people of all ages with a variety of longer and looser or shorter and tighter tops, in winter with boots and in summer with sandals - whatever is comfortable and stylish.

EmmaEmerald · 21/03/2023 21:12

I'm very overweight but I feel I can't wear leggings any more because of that. So I'm interested in posters saying they have to lose weight to wear jeans rather leggings, I feel okay in jeans but not leggings. I always wore them with a top that covered my bum even when slim.

The over 50s? Sneery and ageist. Just like on trainer threads, where you'll get people insisting trainers should only ever be worn for sport, some people will say leggings should only be worn for sport. I don't think you can ascribe that to any particular age, although I do usually assume those people don't dress in a very 'current' style.

Actually I'm over 50 and would wear my SB powers every day if I could get away with it.

guineverechypre · 22/03/2023 00:38

I'm not over 50, or even 40, but only wear leggings for gym/activity. Personal choice, and doesn't mean I judge others for what they wear. I couldn't care less.

Agree with Dietrich that it's sneery and ageist to ascribe it to over 50s

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 22/03/2023 00:57

I wear sports leggings for exercise. Maybe on weekends if I'm going for the middle-class-farmers-market-sports-mum-cliche look with a long puffer and a pair of Nikes Grin

Otherwise only wear thermal leggings as tights i.e. tucked into boots so there's no skin showing.

HiddenGiraffes · 22/03/2023 08:48

Leggings are back in now. Mostly I see people wearing them with white sports socks visible over the top.

Firefly2023 · 22/03/2023 09:08

@PropellerDance I am well over 50 (and over 60 even) and wear my leggings under dresses or long shirts. I don't know why @Unicornsaregreat thinks they don't work under dresses - maybe it depends on the leggings. I use very thin leggings under longer dresses - I suppose you could call them footless tights, and slightly thicker, warmer lined ones under very short dresses or shirts (aka tunics). For everyday I wear the more structured gym (riding) leggings with big jumpers, long shirts or hoodies. As long as you have suitably shapely legs I can't see what is wrong with it.

Polis · 22/03/2023 09:23

I’m an under 50 only to the gym person. I’m not keen on them under dresses or skirts. On me anyway.

I did wear leggings at work last week but only because I had been to the gym on the way and forgotten my trousers to change in to. My bum was on display all day and nobody pointed or ran away screaming.

fellrunner85 · 22/03/2023 15:43

Exactly, @Unicornsaregreat - the leggings with dresses look was declared "over" 13 years ago. Of course people can wear what they want to wear, but yes it does look extremely dated.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/03/2023 17:24

Well at 61 I'm beyond caring really if I look dated - I'm more at the 'does it fit and is it comfortable stage'
