Do you still wear leggings and if so - with what?

I was just sorting out my wardrobe over the weekend and realised I no longer have any leggings. I haven't worn them in a long time now, even around the house I wear wide legged jersey 'lounge pants' or pj bottoms.

Similarly I had no jeans at all until last month when I bought a pair of wide legged COS jeans.

There was a time when I wore leggings a lot, mainly under dresses / tunics.

It's funny how things come and go..

I think they look fine on school run/wfh/go to the shops if they're the thick sports type ones and paired with a baggy hoodie/tee or longline roll neck

The thin type are horrific and v dated when paired with dresses or tunics.

HCHQ · 20/03/2023 13:37

I know I should know this, but what are 'ponte' leggings?

I'm considering leggings as I really love this sweatshirt but not sure which to try as I don't want shiny sports leggings.

Other than gym leggings, I only wear them to walk the dog or as a base layer on very cold days.

I'm an inverted triangle though, so slim fit on the bottom and looser on top looks terrible on me.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/03/2023 13:43

@HCHQ ponte is just a type of fabric - a thick, heavy jersey sort of thing often used for dresses because it hangs nicely and has a bit of weight to it. So I imagine ponte leggings are pretty sturdy and don't show your pants through them if you bend down!

Wearing leggins today. I am wearing with a large oversize black shirt and long line cardigan, with a pair of chunky boots. Comfy outfit for a day when I've a sore tummy and don't want to wear trousers. Otherwise occasionaly wear with an oversized jumper.

Pasadenadreaming · 20/03/2023 13:56

I wear them with dresses in the summer as they feel cooler than tights and are better with trainers. Don't really care if it's not a fashionable look as it's comfy and works for the school run!

Makingamess4212 · 20/03/2023 13:58

Currently 37 weeks pregnant and leggings are about the only thing I can get on 🤣 I cannot wait to wear jeans again!

mathanxiety · 20/03/2023 13:59

Mine are for the gym, though I have a pair I wear for a thorough house cleaning or if I have nothing else. I've never worn them with a dress (I never wear dresses except in summer) but I have some oversized sweatshirts to pull on over them.

DinosaurOfFire · 20/03/2023 14:03

I wear thick black ones instead of opaque tights with mini dresses and short skirts, I've never worn them as trouser replacements though. I prefer leggings to tights as they don't fall down, and I can wear thicker socks appropriate to the weather or wear converse style canvas shoes without socks. Only ankle length leggings though, unless its the height of summer and then I'll wear 3/4 or under the knee leggings with summer dresses- I have 3 kids to run around after so need something under my skirt to prevent accidental flashing!

MidnightMeltdown · 20/03/2023 14:25

I wear them with a big sweatshirt for lounging or wfh

Firefly2023 · 20/03/2023 16:36

I prefer leggings under dresses to woolly tights because they don't fall down in the same way. I wear them with long boots and a dress so only a small area is seen anyway and would be indistinguishable from tights. I do still have a few woollen tunic dresses that I would happily still wear with leggings and don't care if the look is dated as they are so comfortable and convenient.

I also wear riding/gym leggings daily for going to the stables. They are perfect with wellies and have a convenient phone pocket.

Mrcpy · 20/03/2023 17:05

I like dresses. So in cold weather, I wear dresses with leggings, thick socks and high boots. It’s one of my favourite outfits!

Theraffarian · 20/03/2023 17:15

Thick leggings , short skirt, boots all the time , but I doubt anyone else really thinks they are anything other than opaque tights , I just prefer warmer legs and socks .

BluebellBlueballs · 20/03/2023 17:20

All the time especially when wfh.

If I'm leaving the house I usually wear something over them, dress or short skirt

I could not live without leggings. Like a second skin.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 20/03/2023 17:22

I’m old enough to recall leggings in the 80s/90s and wore them about 2010ish under dresses (don’t do this now!).

I only wear leggings now at home or out, with jumpers, sweatshirts, trainers etc.

Guinefort · 20/03/2023 17:27

I wear leggings quite a lot as they are warm and comfortable and easy to slip my waterproof trousers and wellies on and off over the top 1000 times a day it feels like when I'm doing the horses. No extra fabric to drag in the mud or get bunched up in my boots. They are definitely not flattering on me though and I always feel slightly self conscious when I have to nip into a shop wearing them and inevitably bump into someone I know Grin

PinkSyCo · 20/03/2023 17:44

I live in them. Wear them with baggy sweatshirts or shirts and DMs or trainers mainly. They are soo comfortable, wash well, dry quickly, and my legs are my best feature so I may aswell show them off. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Babyroobs · 20/03/2023 17:47

I live in them as don't find anything else comfortable and am very overweight. I wear with tunics, long cardigans in winter and boots. I'm not bothered about fashion, at my age comfort and looking half decent is the main priority !

GoodVibesHere · 20/03/2023 17:58

I wear plain black leggings and a dress all winter, with chunky boots and a cardigan, so comfy and warm. I find jeans uncomfortable.

I'd never wear leggings as trousers though.

LimeCheesecake · 20/03/2023 20:04

As others, have gym leggings I wear a lot. The black more cotton material ones worn as half way between trousers and tights, I have a couple of pairs I wear with specific long jumpers that are a bit too short to be jumper dress with normal tights, bit long to be worn with jeans. This is a dog walk outfit, no point getting nice clothes muddy.

the leggings and short jersey dress /tunic look isn’t one I’ve seen on anyone for a while. There does seem to be more short dresses about in shops like White Stuff and Seasalt so perhaps we’ll see a leggings revival.

Cnidarian · 20/03/2023 20:26

Under a short skirt, denim or cord, thick socks, DMs and a jumper/hoodie/sweatshirt. I wear the fleece lined ones as warmer than tights but no one can tell they're leggings

LolaSmiles · 20/03/2023 20:31

I wear them with oversized jumpers with boots or cord skirts with a jumper and boots. They're a cold day staple.

Active wear leggings get worn with my gym gear, or a hoodie if I want a casual athleisure look.

I don't like leggings under summer/spring dresses though or 3/4 leggings. That's been and gone for me.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/03/2023 20:50

The 30s school mums here who are the casual but always put together ones, are all in leggings, mom jeans, or leather skinny jeans. Leggings always plain black, and under a knit jumper that covers their bum and slides almost off one shoulder, with chunky DMs / converse. Or with a cropped sweatshirt over (I assume!) a sports bra, with proper sport trainers.

No coloured leggings at all, and not under dresses / tunics.

Littleguggi · 20/03/2023 20:57

I wear them when not in work, usually with a longline top or oversized jumper/ hoodie.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/03/2023 21:10

My goodness, I would struggle without I wear them virtually every day!!
