  • Lots of different styles of jeans. Still lots of skinnies, with oversized tops
  • Lots of bags like this picture
  • A very large proportion of trainers were New Balance
  • Those not in trainers mainly wore chunky flat or low heeled boots (no one in heels)

You almost got bingo with my entire outfit today OP- I was out in SW London in a fleece, flat chunky Chelsea boots and THAT bag.

back289 · 25/02/2023 23:02

@newbie202020 So true!

Daffodilsandtuplips · 25/02/2023 23:07

North East coast.
Lots of long, long sleeveless puffa jackets, think calf length, worn over black leggings and thin fleece tops. Worn with trainers or boots.
Young lasses wearing crop tops with skinny jeans or black gym trackies.
Quite a few had thick fleecy jackets on.
Mind you the wind was biting today, the sea was whipping up lots of white foam. No surfers out today though.
Lot of Sherpa fleece jackets in the shops,

fleurdelee · 25/02/2023 23:19

I haven't done any people watching in ages

Am in a market town in commuter belt so it's hardly hi fashion here
Near Essex so lots of Botox and filler though

RampantIvy · 25/02/2023 23:32

I find it difficult to look stylish when the weather is cold. I have a couple of wool coats, but in today's biting wind they wouldn't have been warm enough, so I wear my 3 in 1 parka, which also has multiple zip pockets that negates the need for a handbag. I'm so stylish me Grin

I wear straight leg jeans with trainers (not chunky ones as I really dislike this fashion). Today I am wearing a lovely warm cashmere jumper.

safeplanet · 25/02/2023 23:38

fleeces are defo back in

safeplanet · 25/02/2023 23:39

and everyone in black leggings now wears white sports socks

safeplanet · 25/02/2023 23:40

I noticed the same about no heels. Did not see a single one. Or indeed hear one...I particularly noticed the lack of noise of heels whilst moving between tubes/platforms...they used to be part of the hubbub....

go out at night & you will see them, big platforms.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/02/2023 23:44

I was in London this week. Trainers or DMs or chunky boots everywhere. Lots of bright pink coats (an favourite of mine so probably I am more conditioned to notice them). Every shape of jeans. Combat trousers mostly on under 20s.

safeplanet · 25/02/2023 23:45

the only thing I don't like about fashion today is that it seems more homogeneous. So in the 90s when I was a tween/teen you had your different tribes but even within that tribe there were different looks. Now they all seem to wear the exact same outfit & often the exact item.

There were 4 girls in front of me in black leggings, white sports socks, the same NB trainers, black puffa & bag in the OP photo. It was a uniform!

back289 · 25/02/2023 23:53

@safeplanet chunky flats yes but classic pointed mid heels or even kitten heels are fashionable again here. 70's sandals are around but dainty shoes with baggy jeans are back!

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 25/02/2023 23:56

i did a day trip by train via London recently.
I was very interested in the amount of 90s grunge looks I saw on young people - oversized baggy chunky knit jumpers, high waisted boyfriend style stonewashed denim, round John Lennon style glasses, dyed hair, mini rucksacks. Plus skinny cropped t shirts with waistcoats and again stonewashed boyfriend jeans.

bestbefore · 25/02/2023 22:50

Everyone round here wears black leggings with white crew socks pulled up outside the leggings and trainers - very sporty look

This! With either trainers or mini Uggs.
Fleece and/or gilet on top.

MaidOfSteel · 26/02/2023 00:03

All I ever seem to see lately is black leggings (sometimes in very thin fabric so everything is on show) and those big duvet type coats.
I don't really do casual very well, but that seems to be the fashion nowadays.

S. London here.

Low rise straight jeans ...in
Flared leggings...in
Skinny jeans....coming back 😂
High waist ... out
Combats ....in
Flowery dresses... out
Mini uggs ....in
Pointed heels....in
Baggy hoodies/jackets ... in
Cropped tops ... in
Chunky trainers ... in... although brand matters of course
Chunky socks over leggings .... in
Big/layered long hair... in
Straight, one length....out
Thin eyebrows.... in
Glossy skin... in
Coloured nails... out
Ott nail extensions and nail art... in
Cross body bags ... out
Shoulder bags... in
Tiny bags... in
Loud 70's print top and bottoms ....in

There's a lot more too!

It's the combo of what you wear it all with that matters!
And as ever.... try hard is out! London is always more relaxed than up north

I love london, tbh anything goes, it depends on how you wear it, confidence matters!

What's "try hard"? Is it to designate Londoners as being special, cool and oh so enlightened with their clothing, and to paint Northerners as being ever so stupid in their clothing choices?

Meandfour · 26/02/2023 00:11

@back289 I don’t know which part of “north” you’re referring to but it’s all casual / athlesiure “up here”

Funnily enough, I’ve always found London to be very “look at me” so the complete opposite of your own opinion.

So true. I actually find it unnerving how much kids and even adults look the same.

LunaTheCat · 26/02/2023 00:19

Oh .. living vociferously through this thread! I love London and people watching is my favourite thing! (I’m in the Southern Hemisphere 😂)

StClare101 · 26/02/2023 00:19

Well, fleeces seem very practical? Puffer jackets are still big here in winter (Australia), worn with leggings, jumper and trainers.

Allthismidnighttalking · 26/02/2023 00:19

Ithi

back289 · 26/02/2023 00:22

Ooh I seems to have hit a nerve with the northerners! 😂 but they are here on a thread about london fashion 🤣

Northerners are much more dress up than down south, that's a FACT. And generally behind the times fashion wise ..., shoot me now... I don't care!

I'm actually northern so I can say what I want, and what I see! Stop being so defensive, it's pathetic!

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 26/02/2023 00:22

Meant to say I recognise the black leggings, trainers and crop top look too - with either the puffa coats as above but also paired with beige ankle lengths macs or camel tailored coats too. Are over-sized blazers still in anywhere or have they fallen by the wayside?

viques · 26/02/2023 00:22

Surely the ultimate accessory is the Roka backpack?

@viques if you're 60 and on mumsnet 😂
