  • Lots of different styles of jeans. Still lots of skinnies, with oversized tops
  • Lots of bags like this picture
  • A very large proportion of trainers were New Balance
  • Those not in trainers mainly wore chunky flat or low heeled boots (no one in heels)

There are always mums dressed in walking boots with backpacks on as if walking 4 miles is going to stretch them.

Their children also have outdoor wear as if it’s like some sort of endurance episode

🤷‍♀️ lots of people wear backpacks now, they aren’t the most flattering but if you are lugging a laptop or loads of kid stuff they are better for your back and leave your hands free. Walking in pavements all day is tiring for anyone and your feet will keep going longer in walking shoes.

For the people not being deliberately obtuse.
Try hard, as most people that are interested in fashion means exactly that.
Not too matchy matchy, too contrived, it's best to put your own spin/identity/fun on your outfits.
If you're too identikit....it's naff

Sorry but most northerners are at least 6 months/ 1 year behind london most have never heard of the cool brands! .

Sounds like your quite behind yourself.
Perhaps before this fabulous thing called social media, it was a thing that some places were “behind” others.
Now, anyone from anywhere in the world can see what others are up to, including what others are wearing. It’s really rather fascinating.

SunsetStrip · 26/02/2023 00:49

With social media and the fact most stuff is bought online, or at least available online, the difference between north and south has pretty much flatlined. The north don't need to wait for the fashions to arrive in the shops anymore. That doesn't mean styles aren't more suited to one area more than another, but people with similar lifestyles will wear the same whether they are north or south.

back289 · 26/02/2023 01:01

@Meandfour I guess it's the northerners I know that are behind!
Although some of my relatives are and always were fabulous!
Why oh why do I see so many northern women, glammed up like crazy in boring old jeans and a 'nice' (generally awful) top?

I do think that southerners have the edge here, kinda proves it when people are click baited to a link don fashion thread

The jeans thing is interesting as I feel like it’s the older gen hanging on the skinnies and the youngster all have those higher waist boyfriend or girlfriend baggier types. So unflattering on anyone with shall we say mature womanly curves.

my observation from sitting people watching in Costa in a large shopping centre today was that everyone under 20 wears cropped tops. No one young had a longer top on at all. Super Short T shorts and little bra gym type tops with jeans or leggings and then the ubiquitous black Puffa coat. Youngsters seem to have a uniform more than ever ( ra ra skirts and suede pixie boots in 80s was about the equivalent!)

Middle aged women seem lost fashion wise. Saw only one or two that stood out as stylish if I’m honest. So many of those flowery slightly stretchy tops that end in the worst position just above the crotch. I blame Next.

That is because the one thing older women can't wear is crop tops. I wore them in the 90's when I was 8 months pregnant. I can't wear them now.

Floraflower3 · 26/02/2023 01:32

In my neck of SE London I saw more practical/ athleisure looks as lots of dog walkers+ river path etc. I was in NB trainers, black leggings, a short half zip jumper thing and black puffer jacket.

We get tourists and people not from here visiting that you tend to be able to spot. I noticed a woman and couldn’t quite place why but her outfit looked dated even though it should have been fashionable. She had a black mini dress or skirt and top with thin denier tights, black not quite knee high low heeled boots and a leather jacket/ blazer thing. I think it was the boots and haircut.

So how does that tally with everyone who is anyone wearing the same black leggings and white socks?

(It’s ok, I’m northern so I can say what I like) 🙄

user1496262496 · 26/02/2023 02:13

On the way to Greggs wearing Wellies, flat cap… accessorised with a ferret and a whippet. I am in the north

RhadamanthNemes · 26/02/2023 02:25

This thread is quite bonkers.

Are we really having a North/South full-on horror??

Madness.

RhadamanthNemes · 26/02/2023 02:27

And 'Middle aged women look shit'

FFS.

This is bad.

What are we doing???

RhadamanthNemes · 26/02/2023 02:41

I'm 50 and Northern and have done 70s PE teacher, French preppy with a hint of Dark Academia, German avant garde magazine editor, and slick and sexy as looks this week.

I bloomin love clothes.

I HATE it when it ain't great or good.

garlictwist · 26/02/2023 03:08

I think you have to be young to pull off the fleece/90s look. Otherwise you look frumpy.

DarkNecessities · 26/02/2023 03:25

I was out and about in ‘my city’ Friday.

I can’t say I noticed what anyone was wearing and could barely remember what I was wearing myself!

North/South?
aren’t most people wandering around cities, especially London, tourists anyway?

magicthree · 26/02/2023 03:41

Oh, the poor things!

I would have thought that slavishly wearing the "cool brands" is hardly innovative.

User4891 · 26/02/2023 04:32

So to be clear... If we don't follow the latest trends then we look frumpy and boring?

The trend where I am atm is those extra long length gillets with hoodies underneath them. People walk around in them like they're the business when they in fact look like they cut armholes in their sleeping bags IMO. I'll stick to looking old and boring thanks if looking f'ing ridiculous is the alternative.... At least I'm not pandering to the shallow and mysogenistic attitudes that have been demonstrated on this thread...

Simplepink · 26/02/2023 05:05

fashionable northern village within rough northern city here.
The Young come in 2 groups - leggings puffa jacket, white trainers then the baggy jeans with the fleece.

I am old now but definitely trying (try hard) to emulate the former group 😆
also being northern love to slap on my fake tan for the weekend.
also not from Liverpool but loved the putting your rollers in on a Saturday afternoon trend too

Yorkshiredolls · 26/02/2023 05:15

Every student in Leeds looks like they fell over and rolled around in the sale section of urban outfitters. 90s crop top and ultra low slung cammo pants section, and goth section. And theres also those awful chunky/clear framed deidre glasses that are so frumpy

Redkettle · 26/02/2023 05:25

Next has turned into m and s full of garish material, flowey satin shit . Like ur nan would wear in the 80s. I don't know where to shop anymore. Even when I buy expensive stuff still look shit

Fuctifin0 · 26/02/2023 05:30

I am Northern and was down in London one day this week.
It's true that there seems to be more variation in London in what people are wearing.

There seemed to be an awful lot of people wearing contrived outfits. Dressing to be seen, rather than comfortable.
I used to work in a university, every year, there would be students turn up who dressed in whatever was fashionable. There would be a minority who "found" themselves and went off piste fashionable wise, kind of dressing to shock.

That's what London reminded me off, lots of those type of people along with the more run of the mill dressers.

LapinR0se · 26/02/2023 05:30

I’m flying to NY today. Will report back on the street style

Waystation · 26/02/2023 06:27

back289 · 26/02/2023 00:22

Ooh I seems to have hit a nerve with the northerners! 😂 but they are here on a thread about london fashion 🤣

Northerners are much more dress up than down south, that's a FACT. And generally behind the times fashion wise ..., shoot me now... I don't care!

I'm actually northern so I can say what I want, and what I see! Stop being so defensive, it's pathetic!

Don’t be so silly, I live just north of the midlands and spend a lot of time in London (say ten days a month) - first it depends which part of London you live/visit, fashion varies so much between areas, and as for the north being “different” you do know we have the same shopping options.
