  • Lots of different styles of jeans. Still lots of skinnies, with oversized tops
  • Lots of bags like this picture
  • A very large proportion of trainers were New Balance
  • Those not in trainers mainly wore chunky flat or low heeled boots (no one in heels)

I live in the NW.
The fashion sense here is similar to what I’ve seen in London.
Very casual - leggings with chunky socks pulled over the top, chunky trainers (usual NB) oversized hoodies worn with a fleece jacket over the top or cropped puffa. Wearing the same colour but in different tones/shades is popular too.
Wide leg jeans. People still wear skinnies though, including me - they have never really gone ‘out’ imo.
With leggings, which are obviously a skinny fit, being worn universally, you can’t really say skinny jeans are out of fashion.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 27/02/2023 09:31

@happytobemrsg a sort of scandi - preppy look in muted Autumn tones.
How tall are you?
What size are you?
Have you checked cos for trousers?
What sort of budget are you on?
Well discounted rusty brown jacket

Looking forward to wearing Andy's nightshirt then. 😀

I had an Andy Panda outfit when I was 3 😂

GettingStuffed · 27/02/2023 10:03

I had a dress like the one in OP in 1987, I wore it when I met my in-laws for the first time. I'm in the South west, Bristol side and the fashion round here are bone coloured trackies plus an identical colour cropped t-shirt with a black puffy coat of any length worn open never mind the temperature

@mewkins 😂😂
There was a funny thread a while back, it's in classics I think, about style mistakes.
A woman bought a leather jacket thinking she'd look funky, instead she "looked like Susie Quattro's fat Nan" 🤣

😆😆😆 it's funny how what you think you will look like (cool and casual) turns into something else when you actually wear the clothes 😬

Maireas · 27/02/2023 10:22

True. I once bought a beret, thinking I'd look chic and Parisian, but just ended up looking like the world's oldest Brownie.

No! You were just embracing your "dark academia style" 😂😂😂

I bought a lovely knitted beret, in burgundy. Loved it.

Then DD came home, said I looked like Miss Hooley from Balamory and I've never worn it since.
I then bought a beanie hat and apparently, looked like a gnome. Also relegated to the cupboard of fashion doom due to teen.

She however can wear anything and look effortlessly cool as fuck. If I didn't love her so much I'd call her a jammy cow

Maireas · 27/02/2023 12:03

Ah, @ReformedWaywardTeen , the privilege of youth. I have Sixth formers (not the Lady Godiva brigade) who wear charity shop/vintage clothing that would make me look like I spend my days outside the station asking for spare change.

😅😅😅My 12 year old assesses what I wear and then comes out with a scathing assessment (my new coat is a 'drug dealers coat' apparently). Very occasionally she will nattow her eyes and say 'I'm going to steal that off you' .

Oh I've had her steal so many things from me. I bought a lovely black wool trench, in the charity shop. Stolen within 2 days.

Or the pairs of vintage jeans I had from my goth days, which I caught her telling her mates she "thrifted them". Yeah from my cupboard

One coat I then bought to replace it was designated as "awful mum, what the hell are you thinking?"

It's worse than Trinny and Susannah here.

kateandme · 27/02/2023 12:47

Anyone else now going ablut their day looking at what everyone's wearing.
Some of the men though...what have they been up to in others areas?

kateandme · 27/02/2023 12:49

Do you think some people just don't look good in clothes lol.or is it the confidence in anything you put on that makes it work? I've seen all sizes, shapes just look great in clothes.but I'd put said outfit on and look like a fool .

Men round here are scruffs. It's all tracksuits.
I don't know how any girl finds a suitable date now. All this "men in grey trackies is hot" rubbish means they all believe they look hot. They really bloody don't.
Or they're alternative dressing. Which is fine.

I did yesterday. It made me realise that I don't normally notice what people wear. I'm sure that yesterday was the first time I have seen someone in a long armless coat padded gilet though. And I have never seen anyone in flesh coloured leggings. Black seem to be de rigeur round here, and I haven't seen any white socks either.

Pigtailsandall · 26/02/2023 21:26

I do think it's a bit unfair for some of the more mature folk to state that "nothing is new in fashion"; each round of flared jeans or crop tops usually brings something new, a new take on something old. Fashion isn't necessarily static cycles. Each generation adds its own flair.

Yes, completely agree - the 70s version of flares and accompanying style was different to 1930s wide leg trouser looks, both very different to 90s flares looks, even though the 90s trends were consciously throw back to 1970s, it was a very different style.

Vintage clothes still look vintage.

Yes the grey joggers!not even smart kind

GellerYeller · 27/02/2023 16:37

We had someone come for an interview in those pale grey male joggers that are more like leggings and positioned themselves infront of the MD, legs akimbo, leaning nonchalantly back in the chair. The confidence was impressive! As was the MD’s poker face 😂

Haha.a good candidate though?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/02/2023 17:30

@GettingStuffed I had a blue and white striped skirt similar to the dress, also in 1987. I used to wear it with a vintage Victorian petticoat underneath, a vintage cream longline bra, a black fedora and Dr Martins. Lord only knows what I looked like!

GellerYeller · 27/02/2023 18:03

@kateandme was judged on merit and got an offer!

I can relate to this, I really want to be the kind of person that wears hats, but the hats just don't like me!

Maireas · 27/02/2023 19:11

Oh, I don't get on with hats at all.
Random observations from York city centre, lunchtime today -
Puffa coats and jackets. On everyone - teens, middle aged and some obviously very elderly. Usually black, sometimes that horrible depressing khaki colour.
Backpacks and crossbody bags.
Bobble hats.
Leggings or jeans, skinny or wide legged.
Every variation of trainer known to man or woman.
Quite a lot of bare ankles, some midriffs.
Flesh coloured leggings.
