  • Lots of different styles of jeans. Still lots of skinnies, with oversized tops
  • Lots of bags like this picture
  • A very large proportion of trainers were New Balance
  • Those not in trainers mainly wore chunky flat or low heeled boots (no one in heels)

So which are the good people watching neighbourhoods now? I don't get to London very much these days, and when I do, it's busy seeing family etc. But all the old places where once upon a time I'd be guaranteed to see something eye-popping, are very homogenous now.

I like London and I can't believe all the interesting dressers have left - they've just moved, surely? Suggestions welcome!

Shoreditch is your friend.. Old St..Hackney is fab especially in summer where I'm always blown away by the inventive/cool outfits both M/F other.
Canary Whatf and city circa 2000 was like no other in summer.. short short skirt suits, sandals to die for..I don't know what it's like now.
Walthamstow (my home) is a great mixture of people and clothing wise never fails.. I find Hamstead rather dull, it's neighbour Islington and Stoke Newington is eye-catching.
Brixton is totally absorbing in the sheer variety of people and dress sense, I haven't ventured much further south although I worked in Croydon for a while.. much tracksuited folk..no definitive code but nothing much to see either.
The suburbs of woodford/Epping are interesting.. the 14-21 all have a very common dress code..they look like clones, much the same as Ilford.
Stratford (grab a pew in Westfield) is eclectic, but not a nice place to spend the day 🤔

Oh seconded bare ankles. How? Why?

I can't escape it! I actually said to my 25yr old very chic DD that I'm not able to be an ankle show person when she advised me to turn my trousers up.. it makes me so cold🙈.. I know many disagree but its comfort for me now..I just can't bear being restricted in clothing/cold/ have sore feet..I haven't given up( I run most items past the 25yr old) the tops that someone said NEXT were responsible for ..they would never pass the DD scrutiny 🤣 ..mind you most of me is covered by a long showerproof coat by M&S naturally...it gives me proper protection against the cold/rain and confirms my middle age credentials 🤣🤣

Hahaha DH commented on beige legging clad female in Aldi yesterday. He said ‘Well those don’t leave a lot to the imagination do they?’ 😂Have to agree.

He should try being in a classroom with half a dozen of them!

Benjispruce4 · 26/02/2023 16:42

With flares, you’ve no need to turn your trousers up! You can wear your long socks underneath!

Benjispruce4 · 26/02/2023 16:44

@Maireas i can imagine. He’s not usually one to comment. We have two DDs aged 19 & 22 so he is used to all sorts of clothing and he was quite tentative with his comment because I usually support the person wearing what they like but he did have a point.

RhadamanthNemes · 26/02/2023 16:49

Mind you @Floisme, I shouldn't deride the stretchy stuff. I was told off and sent home by the nuns for wearing a Pam Hogg catsuit to sixth form in the early 90s.

It did look brilliant.

Accessorised with red Chipie trainers.

Maireas · 26/02/2023 16:51

Oh, please tell me you have a photograph, @RhadamanthNemes

Floisme · 26/02/2023 16:53

Thanks SerenaB12, some neighbourhoods there I don't know and that I'll try and incorporate next time I visit.

happytobemrsg · 26/02/2023 17:01

If I have a particular “look” I’m going for is there a personal shopper or someone who will do all the leg work & just find it for me?

JaneJeffer · 26/02/2023 17:02

Floisme · 26/02/2023 15:58

Even the word 'comfy' sets my teeth on edge these days, RhadamanthNemes. It's like we've all got so lazy, we can't even be bothered writing the word in full.
I'm going to regret this post aren't I? Grin
I'm not even drunk posting.

Aah but Sleigh Ride was written 75 years ago and uses the word comfy!

Our cheeks are nice and rosy
And comfy cosy are we

EerieSilence · 26/02/2023 17:03

It rains so much where I live that I only wear jeans occasionally. I have a lounging day today but my style yesterday was pretty much my typical attire most of the days: Johaug concept leggings, two merino layers as tops and an Aran sweater, Fjallraven parka and Hoka Speedgoats - my total favourites.

Stripesagogo · 26/02/2023 17:03

NE England, big city and what I noticed the most was the jeans, sweatshirt and trench coat look.

That's a very fair point, although 'comfortable' wouldn't have scanned

And can I just say that the sooner this trend for wearing beige, cream or pink leggings goes away, the better.

Hear, hear! I have seen things that I can never unsee 😢

That's why I'm so pleased DD has gone for the goth punk choice rather than god awful leggings option.

It depends what you're after.

What are you after?

Sadly not.

I think I have about four photographs of my teens!

Some other bugger may have though.

Maireas · 26/02/2023 16:18

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - gawd, those leggings!
Where I teach, yr12 and 13 wear non uniform, which actually turns out to be a uniform for the girls of leggings and a crop top. Sometimes these are pale pink or flesh coloured, so it feels like half the class have turned up as Lady Godiva.

Grin 😂

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/02/2023 17:51

Re: people watching:
I was in Stoke Newington a few days ago and it was rubbish for people watching - mostly pensioners in badly fitting jeans and nasty shoes, and young mothers in leggings and trainers.

I was also in Clerkenwell, which seemed to be mostly camel coats and platform Converse.

Cam22 · 26/02/2023 18:02

back289 · 26/02/2023 00:22

Ooh I seems to have hit a nerve with the northerners! 😂 but they are here on a thread about london fashion 🤣

Northerners are much more dress up than down south, that's a FACT. And generally behind the times fashion wise ..., shoot me now... I don't care!

I'm actually northern so I can say what I want, and what I see! Stop being so defensive, it's pathetic!

You’re using too many exclamations to imply you don’t care but really you’re rattled!!!!!!

I’m starting to think goth punk is the most resilient fashion trend EVER. Hippie, punk, new age, heave metal, mod, grunge etc… all came and left, goth has been going strong since mid 80’s and has no plans to leave us. Wonder why.

Sandra1984 · 26/02/2023 18:19

Sorry I mean “goth”, not “goth punk”, bloody typos.

NatashaDancing · 26/02/2023 18:22

Carpediem15 · 26/02/2023 15:39

Anyone know where the dress (posted by OP) is from please.

That blasted bag is preventing Google lens finding the dress.

These are close but not it.

It does have its own trends. Neon accents come and go and the shoes and accessories change over time. But it being black-based probably helps to keep it as a kind of classic.

Agreed -although hippie has hung on as well.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 26/02/2023 18:35

I think the dress is Uniqlo like the bag @Carpediem15
