  • Lots of different styles of jeans. Still lots of skinnies, with oversized tops
  • Lots of bags like this picture
  • A very large proportion of trainers were New Balance
  • Those not in trainers mainly wore chunky flat or low heeled boots (no one in heels)

It depends what you're after.

What are you after?

Not really sure how to describe it but here’s pics

I think the dress is Uniqlo like the bag @Carpediem15

Thanks (I suppose if I'd applied thought I might have found it)

I like it. Our office junior/ trainee PA wears dresses like that.

I’m starting to think goth punk is the most resilient fashion trend EVER. Hippie, punk, new age, heave metal, mod, grunge etc… all came and left, goth has been going strong since mid 80’s and has no plans to leave us. Wonder why.

Very true.

There is a big age gap between DH and I and he remembers goths in the 80s as he went to a few Cure gigs himself back then.
Then I went goth in the 90s.
My niece definitely did too in the mid 2010s.
Now DD. And they have really gone in with it.

They were very lucky to be given a huge stash on vintage band t-shirts from the 90s and I still had a few mementos knocking about of goth jewellery that was vintage when I got it. They were the first to go that way out their friendship group. But they aren't keen on the popular kids in school and are arty and so it seemed an obvious thing that they'd go alt.

My DS, who is a year group younger has gone for Fred Perry polo shirts and nice jeans. He pinched all my vintage trainers as well until they grew out of them. The rest of his mates are sporty or skate boarder. He's a little ska/mod.

Thank you - I am going to order it.

I love the Harrods one but a bit out of my price rang.
Thank you.

I went to the Oxford Street Urban Outfitters with my 15 year old dd a few months ago. Every teenage girl (including dd) was wearing identikit boyfriend/flared jeans, cropped/short close-fitting top, black puffer jacket, white trainers.

I had a flashback to being 15 and wearing skinny, stretch jeans with white piping down the side, an oversized donkey jacket and suede pixie boots, Exactly the same as all my friends.

Black. All black clothes look good 😄

I'm Northern too (Manchester to be precise) 52 years old, my style is similar to yours. I wear mainly Joe Brown or Joanie Clothing dresses (they suit my shape) with either my Office boots (brown suede, calf length, chunky heel) or trainers (Vans, Puma, Nike, Reebok.. they're a bit of an obsession of mine atm) and either cardigan or denim jacket.

I've worn a variation of this outfit since around 1988 when 18yr old me found a beautiful, Laura Ashley style, lace collared dress in BHS and wore it with my DM's and leather biker jacket.

Much like yourself, I'm not really bothered what's in fashion, I found my look many years ago and have more or less stuck with it ever since.

If it ain’t broke!!!

Not on me, black doesn’t suit me (Spanish brunette olive skin tone), I look like a Sicilian widow dressed in black hence the reason I was never a goth. Strong Colours is my thing. Not all trends look good on everyone unfortunately 🤣

These threads can be silly. London is a huge city and when people from outside London say "I was in London this week" they usually refer to a hub area near to a main line station which is full of tourists and visitors, rather than somewhere full of actual Londoners.

It is - I think people forget that there are almost twice as many people living in London as there are in the whole of Scotland, even without the tourists. And then are surprised that different areas are different 🤔

NevieSticks · 26/02/2023 21:00

I keep on seeing ridiculous articles about what is on trend or fashionable - the other day it was about trench coats. I thought oh yes I have 3 of them hanging in the downstairs cupboard.

Nothing is new. I looked up the dark academia referred to here - well I'm pretty sure that most people have some of these items in their wardrobe too ( although I am sure that I will be told it's the putting of them all together).

Because I am so old I have lived through the psychedelic kaftans and bell sleeve of the hippy flower power age of the 1960s, the 70s were a mash of minis, midis, Laura Ashley, tiered skirts , glam, disco, sequin boob tubes , wide jeans and platforms, blazers, narrow legs, houndstooth - just everything! Hair has gone from long long hair to permed like a lion's mane and back to long hair. The 1980s were all Cyndi Lauper stuff and jumpsuits and shell suits and then everything has been recycled since then.

I do agree that a uniform has emerged post covid of the puffer coats , trainers etc. I do hate the tracksuit bottom thing on both men especially ( yikes!) and women. My SD wears the baggy tracksuit bottoms, the crop top, a black jacket and it is just so boring imo to look at and possibly to wear? When I was at Uni I swanned around in black panne and velvet , halter neck dresses and afghan coats ( no wonder I drove my mother insane) and ethnic clothes from the Hare Krishna markets. Clothing was fun!

My favourite has to be the 1960s hippy trends. That is where my heart belongs and I like to indulge that when I go on holidays to hot countries. I often wonder if that is just because it was the fashion that existed when I was a young teen and life and music all seemed so exciting. ❤️😀

Sorry I mean “goth”, not “goth punk”, bloody typos.

I was a goth punk. It was all the black and fishnet of goth, but the pvc, piercings and safety pins of punk.

Re exposed ankles: I don't mind them, but it does mean I have to shave about 3 inches of leg.

Puddinandpie · 26/02/2023 21:20

Look, I love London, visit regularly, it really is one of the best cities in the world.

BUT, when I lived there in the 90s and worked in the city, the thing that surprised me was how fucking parochial it was. It really was, to the people who lived there, as if there was no other place in the UK that was fathomable.

Which is why I left in the end.

It's ok to 'dress up'.

I cringe so hard when a poster asks on S&B what they should wear 'In London' and posters fall over themselves to deride anything other than sackcloth and ashes as 'try hard'.

And may the Lord save you if you're going to a regional Ivy restaurant and want to dress up. You may as well throw yourself in the bin, you utter fool.

London has just had fashion week. It's one of the world's fashion capitals. It's absolutely fine to get your dressy on. In London or anywhere.

And FUCK people who are too cool for school.

Clothes and dressing should be fun and joyous, look at Vivienne Westwood's funeral last week. It was in London, and a celebration of British fashion.

Don't dress down, dress up! And bloody well enjoy it.

Absolutely well bloody said, I'm in london and don't give a shit what I wear and I'm quite dressy alot of the time (at least i think anyway) I like being dressed up makes me feel good and to be quite honest, in london no one cares who's wearing what, everyone is just doing there own thing!! That's what's great about it!😁

Pigtailsandall · 26/02/2023 21:26

I do think it's a bit unfair for some of the more mature folk to state that "nothing is new in fashion"; each round of flared jeans or crop tops usually brings something new, a new take on something old. Fashion isn't necessarily static cycles. Each generation adds its own flair.

yes, there was an overlap between goth and punk beginning of 80's. I believe bands like Siouxie Sioux or sisters of mercy represented it very well, then came industrial goth, emo, vampire, rock, dark etc... never a trend has branched so much as goth lol!

Pigtailsandall · 26/02/2023 21:39

Anyway, what I was going to write fully before before my kid woke up:

I live in east London and work centrally; not quite City but its fringes. I love people watching and these are some of the things I've noticed recently:

Trainers are here to stay. Either white or v neutral or ridiculously outlandish. But there's lots of boots, and I've noticed a lot of cowboy boot style heels and designs creeping up which I love

Socks are absolutely to be seen. Scruff up your boots, roll up your jeans and wear a funky stripe sock. Even city boys opt for a bright red or yellow sock with their leather lace-ups

Puffas are common and the younger you are the shorter they get. They also look good on very few.

Jeans are short or v long. I see more and more jeans that cover the shoe and I've just joined that trend because my legs look sooo long. My jeans touch the floor now which is a trend i remember loving

Beanies are the obligatory accessory to a wool cocoon coat. Even for a classic neutral-coloured coat, the beanie can be a bright accessory. Hair must be touching the cheeks to frame the face

Bags are small cross-body style, the dreaded uniqlo style (which I like) or a backpack. Large totes are totes out. Like beanies, they can pop up with colour or be super-retro and a bit scruffy, or be sleek boxy leather ones.

Looking forward to summer when hopefully there'll be a bigger variety of stuff around because you can see more of the tops and bottoms!

That is it, I thought that when I saw it on the post. I saw it in store yesterday. It looks like Andy Pandy's nightshirt.
They also have beige which looks like a thin trench coat and white which looks like a lab coat.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/02/2023 23:28

my observation from sitting people watching in Costa in a large shopping centre today was that everyone under 20 wears cropped tops. No one young had a longer top on at all

No no no! My 16 year old dd and her friends all wear these huge overlong patterned 90’s jumpers. No one apparently wears crop tops!

I tried a darker beige trench on the other day and felt like Ronnie Barker in Open all hours.

@mewkins 😂😂
There was a funny thread a while back, it's in classics I think, about style mistakes.
A woman bought a leather jacket thinking she'd look funky, instead she "looked like Susie Quattro's fat Nan" 🤣
