Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

Ten-o-six cleanser by Bonne Bell.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/01/2023 09:28

Lipcote did have a brush and probably was nail varnish rebranded! Stung like fuck if you had a cut lip!!

Crucible · 17/01/2023 09:39

I remember Lipcote in a straight glass tube (closer to a perfume sample vial) with a maroon lid and writing and a rollerball. It stung...

Greatly · 17/01/2023 09:44

Body Shop Orchid Oil cleanser and the Japanese washing grains
Miss Selfridge Iron Lady lipstick
Cornsilk
Those flavoured lip balms that came in little old fashioned tins with sliding lids - from gifty shops rather than boots

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 17/01/2023 09:59

I fondly remember the M&S blusher... three colours and a highlighter in a tin with a brush.. I miss them still!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/01/2023 10:16

Crucible · 17/01/2023 08:59

The lipgloss with the rollerball was Lipcote.

I remember the roller ball lipgloss as Lip Potion.

I loved that Orchid Oil cleanser! And the Glow 5 face masks a PP mentioned.

DuchessOfSausage · 17/01/2023 10:19

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe , I remember that. It was a flat square tin. The orangey (lower left hand corner) blusher was popular at school, from what I remember. The tins wee good because the packaging didn't break like the plastic ones from brands like Evette.

I also remember the blue Miners eyeliner pencil, and a girl at school was surprised that I used it on my upper lash line too.

Make-up tips were from Jackie supplemented by Blue Jeans or old Fab magazines. A friend's mother read Vogue and used Estee Lauder make up, which I thought was terribly aspirational of her. My mother used lipsalve and atrixo hand cream, and read Woman's Weekly for the sewing and knitting patterns.

late to this party.
In the early 70s my mum used to buy Biba. From the actual shop. She had pots and pots of it for years, i loved them.
Then when i was a teenager it was sold in Dorothy Perkins. I had a block eyeshadow (remember those) and my own little pots of things. They gave you a dinky little black plastic bag with the logo in gold.

Miners. Ah miners. They made a lipstick, Gipsy Rose, that was pale pink-ish but it was actually the best ever "nude" lipstick i've had. Have tried to find similiar but never have.

And those "roller ball" lipglosses! i had one with cinnamon flavour that made my lips itch.

Rina66 · 17/01/2023 10:29

The Miss Selfridge shimmer eye shadow in a bottle that had a little sponge applicator in the bottle top.
Ultra glow bronzer pot - used to go everywhere! Very orange.
Shimmer was big in the 80's - disco lights had a lot to answer for.
What was the awful fake tan in the 80's?

Toomanysleepycats · 17/01/2023 11:04

I’m sure I had a Biba eyeshadow, it was in a little black flip case. I went to the London shop once when I was 14/15?

Loved Aqua Amanda.

My older sister was a heavy user of Charlie, I hated it. And Rive Gauche - aluminium bottle with black and turquoise stripes? Also hated it.

Brefugee · 17/01/2023 12:58

oh and a perfume we all used in the 5th - Upper 6th: Eau Jeune. I'd give my right arm for a bottle of that. It was lovely.

The Biba eyeshadow pressed powder were in little flat round plastic containers, but they had lip-gloss and some creme eyeshadows in tiny little round pots with a screw off lid.

@Toomanysleepycats

I loved the smell of Rive Gauche but never wore it myself. I tried it a few years ago but it didn't smell quite the same, and apparently it was reformulated early 2000s. I bought a bottle from Perfume Parlour which was supposed to be closer to the original, and I think they managed that!

EspeciallyDetermined · 17/01/2023 13:42

My mum used to wear Rive Gauche, it gave me a splitting headache

The PP version of Rive Gauche is absolutely closer to the pre-reformulation than the new real thing. I bought some RG and some PP and there is no comparison. The PP is way closer.

You get it on eBay - green lid? Very lemony. Every so often one crops up.

Brefugee · 17/01/2023 14:11

oh really? I mijustght have a look. Thaks (I just saw a load of old -used- Biba stuff on Etsy!)

PAFMO · 17/01/2023 14:15

There's one for £150 and one for £49.
Tbh, I'd probably have a punt on the latter and offer them less.

Metabigot · 17/01/2023 15:41

I have fond memories of Sensiq - especially the little eyeshadow compacts you could buy.

More recently I was a fan of Ruby and Millie, I think i still have one of their mirrors.

That's still like 10 years ago.

joaniegirl · 17/01/2023 15:49

I've heard similar about PP Mitsouko, but I haven't bought that. @PAFMO

Deathraystare · 17/01/2023 16:06

Outdoor Girl they did a beautiful honey coloured gel for the face. I am white but tried out a lipstick called ripe ackee that seemed to be browny purple (it certainly would not suit me know!) from their range for black skin.
Miners - loved the stuff. Their mascaras were great. Pink panther lip gloss. They had a honey range and I got a pink honey lipstick. They had a 'posh' range with eyeshockers in bright yellow/green/pink and blue. I wanted to upset my mum (very mature!) so put the yellow and green on my eyes. Mum complimented me! Damn!!!

Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.) I had a foundation that you had to smooth in quick as it dried very quickly. Natural shadower for contouring. I must have looked stupid with my contoured face and un-contoured body! Also a golden pink lipstick called satin slicker. One called Rustberry. I also had a pink blusher and a toffee one. Oh and a red nail polish called Jezebel which was a very thin red but I did love it.

Sensiq I Remember that. Had two duo shadows. One pink and mauve, the other cream and brown. Think I had a mascara too.
Yardley - had some lovely shadows called soul setters 6 beautiful colours.
Anyone remember Evette and TU - both Woolworths brand. I borrowed mum's Evette mascara and she had a flame lipstick and then I bought two shadows from TU - Smoke stack - gorgeous lilacy-grey and Maroon Chaos.
Almay - liked their mascara. I do not think it is sold here buy may be in USA?

I never got to Biba but got a pot of their rouge from I think Dorothy Perkins in a bordeaux colour (would have looked like Aunt Sally if I applied it on the cheeks! Instead I applied it over Mary Quant's Chic Cherry lipstick!

I also loved Helena Rubinstein. I got a small pot of foundation for 25p in a chemist (mum accused me of nicking it. It was my lunch money!). I also later got a lipstick. It was lovely. Sadly they no longer sell in England although I have seen online that they ship here I think. Their mascaras are legendary!

Miss Selfridge did decent lipstick and eye pencils. Though the pinkadilly one was too blue a pink for me.

I loved Acqua Manda and Acqua Citra bath stuff. Also perfumes from Faberge Aphrodisia and Babe (would be too sweet for me now). Mum had the Kiku. I loved Rive Gauche (still do!), Lentheric Tramp, White Satin. Max Factor Green Apple,. My favourite was Cachet.

Mum had a ponds mascara block which I did not know what to do with!

Deathraystare · 17/01/2023 16:08

Ooh and Purple haze lipstick by Miners!

Deathraystare · 17/01/2023 16:23

Ten-o-six cleanser by Bonne Bell.

Yes! Plus the shampoo and the face mask!

Plus Max Factor comb on mascara in a lovely mauve colour but highly perfumed.

I also remember the roll on lipgloss!

Deathraystare · 17/01/2023 16:28

@AdelaideRo

Yes Bourjois is back! got a mascara the other day!!

JinglingSpringishBells · 17/01/2023 16:35

Cleansers- whoever mentioned them, I used both Anne French and Lemon Delph.

I am pretty sure you can still get Anne French in Boots but it's on the bottom shelf of the fixture with their own brand of cheap cleansers (like £1.50 a bottle.)

It had such a unique smell.

I did have a Biba lipstick when I was about 14. I must have bought it at Dotty Ps.
It was quite brown and I thought it looked great.

Years later I did go to a Biba store in London and it was so dark inside you could hardly see anything at all!
