Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

The lipstick was Cameo Kiss.

Sorry about the typos, my phone screen is cracked and not all letters work properly.

You are too young for this thread :)
I was buying Prescriptives in my 30s.

My friend used to get the prescriptives foundation and it was ace. By the time I could afford it it wasn't available anymore. I did buy and love bourjois as I did anything french. Excited to hear they are back! Another long gone brand is stila.

Is this it? If yes I remember it. I wasn't interested in it though as I didn't like the packaging! 😂

What was the lip gloss in a glass bottle with a roller ball?

Yes!

I remember about 25 years ago buying an Urban Decay mini palette. I think they were called Look book Palettes or something like that, they were plastic silver and in a really nice box with the model wearing the 'look' of the palette. They were about the size of an average mobile phone today. They had about 8 mini eyeshadows and a cream blush and maybe a sparkly highlighter type thing or lipstick. I loved the look of it and the idea of it, at the time it cost a lot of money, probably about £20. My friends couldn't understand why I loved it so much. To be fair I hardly wore it as the eyeshadows were full of chunky glitter and the cream blush etc got covered in powder. I've never rated Urban Decay. I find their formulas dry and dusty and hard to blend. Even to this day.

MistyRock · 17/01/2023 04:07

Here it is. I had both of these. They are very very cute.

Sorry, I had the top and bottom, not the lipstick one.

I had that Kiku talc in the yellow sphere, liked it a lot.
For special occasions, I wore Sikkim by Lancôme.

Lovely thread! I bought Outdoor Girl, Miners and Boots 17 but - coincidentally given the mentions of Barbara Daly upthread - I'd read an article in which she advised that you could use cheap eyeshadow but you should buy good foundation. I saved up for weeks to get some Clinique. I debated about Max Factor panstick but decided it looked a bit heavy.

The big difference today is that we have so many applicators and brushes. My friends and I used to use our fingers. We also only used to put on one colour. There was no blending for us! I also don't remember buying lipstick until I was much older. It was all lipgloss. I think I had a combination lip gloss and blusher. It all sounds quite awful. I hope I didn't look quite as bad as this sounds!

Stila are still around. I bought some of their eyeliners a few weeks ago.

I've remembered another one, probably from the 1970s - Delph lemon cleanser and toner. Smelt gorgeous (I love lemon-y smelling things).

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/01/2023 06:03

Really bad screenshot of an old and for it from Pinterest

I'm surprised no one has come up with Boots 17 ! I loved it as a teenager and a young adult.

They sell No 17 now. It's only a small range.

I remember a Vidal Sassoon shampoo that smelt of almonds . Beige bottle?
And revlon flex shampoo and conditioner

Dark brown packaging was the one I had, it was one of the first "salon" shampoos you could get on the high street. I think they did a couple of varieties. Smelled like marzipan. Another thing I always got only at Christmas. (the shampoo not marzipan )

PAFMO · 17/01/2023 07:40

What's interesting is how low key, yet ahead of all the singing and dancing wow-factor stuff we get these days a lot of these products are.

Ten-o-six, Clearasil and all those spot treatments - salicylic acid toners, now become a buzzword but been around for 40-50 years

Yeast Pac- probiotics for skincare- Estée Lauder ANR makes you pay £60 for a probiotic serum.

UltraGlow lipstick that was green but adjusted to your pH to give you your perfect shade . On me it went a shade of pink that would thrill Barbara Cartland and was so not my perfect shade !

And Lickety Lips gloss in a thin rectangular tin that the lid slid off

I found some lickety lips in the US earlier this year and pounced on the little sliding lidded tin - it took me straight back to my teenage years. Of course I had to get the bubble gum flavour!

Sootyspuppetmaster · 17/01/2023 08:00

Iron lady pink lipstick from Miss Selfridge, we all wore it weather it suited you or not!

I have re bought the Aqua Manda and Fidgi, neither to me smell like the originals as I remember esp AM.

LetsDoThis2023 · 17/01/2023 08:02

Heather Shimmer lipstick from boots & Dewberry perfume from The Body Shop.

Penguinsaregreat · 17/01/2023 08:12

I had a Stila lipstick in a nude/coral shade it was a great colour. I bought it from one of those huge department store types can’t remember the name and it’s since closed down. It was one which seemed to sell end of stock stuff and if you liked the colours you could drop on.

Crucible · 17/01/2023 08:59

The lipgloss with the rollerball was Lipcote.

MerryChristmasToYou · 17/01/2023 09:24

Was it? I thought that Lipcote was a clear liquid that you painted on your lipstick with a brush, and it was in a bottle a bit like nail varnish.
