Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

I had the glass bottle, roller ball gloss too. It was Lip Potion by (I think) Rimmel. It must have been very cheap as I was only about 14 and earning £1 a week on my Saturday job. I had the lemon version. Wore it in summer and got followed by a cloud of wasps!

Revlon natural wonder
Max Factor Swedish formula and before that something California or California something - all foul pale beings and overcoloured 'sunny' looks!

Lemon Delph cleanser and the toner too. Lovely and lemony.
Also Anne French is no more. Boo hoo.

Boots 17 for a while did a lovely orange blossom cleaner, toner and moisuriser for dry skin. For combi skin they did a cucumber one (not the one Boots have now)

Coty airspun cleanser - avocado.

Max Factor did a really lovely milky cleanser.

Rimmel used to do an oatmeal face mask with lavender. I never used it myself but do remember it.

Beiges not beings!

Kiku perfume- yay!

Made by Faberge

Deathraystare · 17/01/2023 16:46

@GreenManalishi

Heather Shimmer (Rimmel) still available - bought one for my line manager who was reminiscing.

Revlon Flex available from Amazon.

Not super old but I used to love Pout. They had a little shop in Covent Garden and a concession in the Manchester Harvey Nicks. I hoarded pennies from my student loan and used to buy their brown eyeliner and an amazing fuchsia pink lipstick. My best friend swore by their boob cream - said it make you look a cup size bigger. I think they went under in the 2008 recession :(

I also miss Ruby and Millie face glosses - the perfect blusher if you're chronically dry skinned like me.

Much more recently, I'm still not over Becca going out of business. Their AquaLuminous foundation was the best thing ever for 'me but better" skin.

I've heard similar about PP Mitsouko, but I haven't bought that. @PAFMO

I have the PP Mitsouko but I'm not a massive Mitsouko fan tbh, so I'm probably not the best to ask! I do know that the 80s powerhouses that had to change their formulation because of EU regulations are done really well by PP.
The old Estée Lauders are great (White Linen, Wrappings, Cinnabar, Private Collection, Youth Dew, Beautiful etc) as is YSL Opium (I have some real and some PP and the PP is better)

PAFMO · 17/01/2023 16:56

Something else I always mention on this threads- Bourjois used to do a thing in the 80s called Blanc de Base.
I know now it was a highlighting primer but before we'd ever heard of such a thing. It was amazing. A white mousse that just made your skin fabulous.

Ha! I should have read the whole thread because I mentioned Lemon Delph later in the thread! Loved it!!

My spitblock mascara was either Outdoor Girl or Miners, I would not even consider looking at Elizabeth Arden, too expensive as you said.

gelert5619 · 17/01/2023 17:04

Pretty Peach body cream, talc etc. Not make-up but it was distinctive and I bought it for the pretty bottles. I always think of French and Saunders.....

justasking111 · 17/01/2023 17:10

My first lipstick was a Ponds one very small a horrible pink colour looking back. Bought it from the village corner shop and hid it from my mother. It still vanished. She had a habit of turning my room over

deltablue · 17/01/2023 17:19

Not just Kiku perfume, but also Kiku "dusting powder", in a bright yellow sphere with a yellow tassel on top! I saved up my pocket money for ages to buy mum one for Christmas!

Talking of apples (fresh green ones) the shampoo with the spherical lid. Everyone smelt of it.

Also Silkience, shampoo and conditioner (wow, this was new)

Woodleigh green apple shampoo? It smelt gorgeous!

Anypne remember Cherish toothpaste? It was red and tasted of fake cherry. Loved it but it wasn’t on sale long.

What was the lip gloss in a glass bottle with a roller ball?

Lipcote!

I loved Outdoor Girl. The only makeup which didnt crease and stayed put for hours.

Iron lady pink lipstick from Miss Selfridge, we all wore it weather it suited you or not!

I have re bought the Aqua Manda and Fidgi, neither to me smell like the originals as I remember esp AM.

I wore it but their lipsticks were so drying and topped with lipcote Smile

Red toothpaste now there's a lost memory. Mine was supposed to make your gums redder so that my teeth looked whiter. I can't remember the name of it

I'd buy it if it was still available! I do remember the toner being quite astringent though 😂

PAFMO · 17/01/2023 20:02

The red toothpaste I remember was Close Up.

tobee · 17/01/2023 20:52

Just remembering how much I loved Bergasol suntan oil; such a beautiful citrus smell and glamorous vibes from the advertising campaign but very expensive.

Got some from somewhere last year but the scent was not the same Sad.

Don't think this ad campaign would go down well in 2023!:

I remember lots of apple smelling products too.
I remember my mum always having talc in the bathroom. She would put it on after a bath. It went out of fashion though, was it drying on the skin or something. She had ones in tins as well as Johnson’s baby powder.
I also remember bath crystals. Not sure what they were officially called but we bought them at summer fayres in fancy jars with ribbons. I suppose they were the original home made gifts.
Someone mentioned those bath balls which when they exploded in the bath left an oil slick which if you trod on caused you to slip everywhere. Mum loved those too. We would get them in long tubes.

I loved Charles of the Ritz.

I’ve still got a Charles of the Ritz make up set my dad bought me in the 80’s. Will have to take a photo of it, colours were a bit … shall we say bright 😂

Loved Miss Selfridge With the pink lips on. I had a lipstick “ copper knockers “ and one called “Doris Karloff “

they were fab
