Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

I had Boots 17

shimmer Heather or something? Lip cote

body shop white musk - very sophisticated

Bananalanacake · 16/01/2023 21:21

The roller ball lip gloss was definitely Spectacular, they were metallic colours. Does anyone remember Sweet Georgia Brown. I think urban decay is still around.

TwigsAndPebblyShit · 16/01/2023 21:27

I always dredge this up on this type of thread in case anyone remembers it....but Sunsilk De Parfum shampoo.

Late 80s, pale clear purple shampoo which smelt AMAZING

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 16/01/2023 21:44

Boots 17 is still around?

I still miss Lancôme juicy tubes - so Y2K, I can still smell the watermelon one. Always ended up with my hair stuck to it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/01/2023 21:44

There was a roll on deodourant in a ridged hourglass shaped bottle and a huge rollerball to apply (and I was never cool enough to buy it )

Novella4 · 16/01/2023 21:46

I remember a Vidal Sassoon shampoo that smelt of almonds . Beige bottle?
And revlon flex shampoo and conditioner

Novella4 · 16/01/2023 21:47

Just looked it up - you can still get flex shampoo

JoanThursday · 16/01/2023 21:53

Boots 17 lippy in Twilight Teaser, Pinking Shear or Bon Bon. And Miss selfridge lippy in Iron Lady. Those were the days. My dad couldn't understand my desire to make myself look ill 😂

I think boots 17 disappeared for a while, but has now been resurrected??

GreenManalishi · 16/01/2023 22:01

Rimmel Heather Shimmer lipstick, and L'Oreal Studio Line hair mousse which had white packaging with a red yellow and blue graphic on, Revlon FLEX shampoo and conditioner which was banana coloured, Paloma Picasso perfume (I'm going to have to find some of this to sniff again), Body Shop bath pearls which just left the weird slimy skins stuck to the bottom of the bath, plus their blotting papers for your shiny nose, and plenty of Silvikrin hairspray to keep that perm and fringe in place!

AnImaginaryCat · 16/01/2023 22:11

Does anyone recall a make up company that was somethimg like a subscription? If I'm remembering correctly you had to fill out your colourings (skin, hair, eye colour) and they sent you items that were a match. Like purple eye liner for blue eyes 🙄. Think there might have been a guide booklet sent too.

Can't recall how you paid. One of mu older sisters did it. I couldn't wait till I was older and earning to get it myself. It was so sophisticated.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/01/2023 22:15

@woodhill Oh Christ, those shaders and toners!! One ended up giving my nice ash blonde (courtesy of wood nymph dye) a purplish hue-

Crikeyalmighty · 16/01/2023 22:18

@Penguinsaregreat Ah yes Tramp and tweed!! Theres a vintage style chemists here in Bath who sells all these old brands, yardley soaps, really old school stuff!!

DuncanBiscuits · 16/01/2023 22:27

Panstick.
Aapri apricot facial scrub.
Ann French cleansing milk.
Panache by Lentheric.
Lace and Pink Lace perfume.
Shaders and Toners.

DuncanBiscuits · 16/01/2023 22:28

I used to use a coloured hair mousse that sent my school shirt collars pink.

Shellingbynight · 16/01/2023 22:44

@JinglingSpringishBells I used to wear Fidji, you can still buy it. I got some last year but was really disappointed, it smells old ladyish. Best left as a nice memory!

Penguinsaregreat · 16/01/2023 22:47

Ann French cleansing milk!!!
I remember buying it as a teenager though lord knows it didn’t do my spotty teenage skin any good. Think I moved onto Clearasil and a similar thing from Avon which were much better.
I remember number 17 lipsticks which had a slider up the side to wind the lipstick up and down instead of a twist.

Penguinsaregreat · 16/01/2023 22:50

Did anyone else buy coloured hair gel in tubs? I bought the green one in the hope of transforming myself into a Bananarama lookalike.
It was like gunk and glued your hair together. All toped off with half a can of Insett hairspray.

Not Charlotte Tilbury, she's too young!
I think you're thinking of Liz Collinge makeup, which was organised by skintone. Her husband Andrew had a haircare line and they were ALWAYS in the press.

No honestly, I’m not! I can totally see why you would think so though. But CT is 49 and I believe she had already become a “name” MUA by the late nineties, although she was nowhere near the household name level at that point.

It might have been more like the very, very early 2000s when this early little range of hers briefly flashed into existence, but it was absolutely a thing, long before her current brand. I don’t think it gets acknowledged in interviews or profiles of her because it didn’t last long or do very well.

You know how she does those chunky eyeliner pencils for specific eye colours? It was an early version of that approach. When she launched the current range I remember making the connection.

It’s incredibly hard to Google this because of the vast, vast quantity of more recent hits that swamp it, but it did exist. I managed to find evidence of it two or three years ago during a RL conversation with someone. I wasn’t sure if I was remembering it accurately so I really drilled down into search results and found an actual scan of a magazine from that period mentioning the range.

I’ll try to find it again!

CavalierApproach · 16/01/2023 22:58

(Name-change confusion, sorry@TheSpottedZebra — I’m the same pp though)

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/01/2023 22:59

Here you go - MyFace by Charlotte Tilbury:

Tonty · 16/01/2023 23:00

Mary Quant - First lipstick which was mum's.

'Constance Caroll' was awful as it used to make my lips itch and become dry and scaly.

Fashion Fair - Gorgeous! but expensive.

CavalierApproach · 16/01/2023 23:27

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 16/01/2023 22:59

Ah thank you! 2009 is much later than I remembered — I think I’m just getting old and the decades are running together. But still, glad to have confirmation it was a thing.

Zooeyzo · 16/01/2023 23:42

I seem to remember Charlotte Tilbury being on this morning quite a bit during the late noughties

whiteroseredrose · 16/01/2023 23:57

Anyone remember Anne French cleansing milk? I used that and a face pack called Yeast Pac for spots.

Our local radio advertised Cuticura Mildly Medicated soap for spots, and Ayds to help you lose weight. I can still hear the damned ads in my head now!

MistyRock · 17/01/2023 03:26

VanillaImpulse · 16/01/2023 19:22

Yes I remember this as I worked for Superdrug at the time. It was the first time I think they had an exclusive brand back in the days when it was seen as a cheap drug store.
I liked Oil of Ulay (later Olay) make up.

I still have an eyeshadow compact my mum gave me that is Mary Quant!

I had the Oil of Ulay tinted moisturiser, it was the best I had ever used (at the time) it had a radiance to it and made my skin glow. I then used a Cover Girl long lasting lipstick as a blush, in a pale pink and I always got compliments in my skin. I was forward thinking with my male up. Its always been a passion of mine.
