Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

Does anyone remember Madeleine Mono Arabian Lights?

Good grief! Yes! I had a mauve one.

You know when I got on here I was sadly remembering that I rarely got money from my parents but looking back on my posts I seemed to have amassed quite a lot of make up some how! No stealing, honest!

Every time I open this thread I get a blast of nostalgia! What about Flex shampoo and conditioner, that smelled absolute divine. No idea why they stopped producing that. Also 17 Twilight Teaser lipstick. It didn't suit a single soul but we all wore it! I paired it with electric blue mascara 😆

I can't ever remember looking at make up and asking myself if it would suit me, I just bought it and slapped it on 😂

Deathraystare · 21/01/2023 17:26

@nettie434

I tried panstick. Hadn't much idea of blending then. It went on patchy on my combination skin!

Deathraystare · 21/01/2023 17:28

Anyone remember Princess Gallitzine?

I lusted after their eye pencils! I could only afford one. Greenwood, a green shot with gold. There were loads and I wanted them all!

No one will have noticed, we were all patchy and wearing the wrong shade!

Absolutely. With my Mary Quant Chic Cherry (a deep purple brown) and Outdoor Girl Ripe Ackee (a deep brownish colour) I should go back in time and give my head a wobble! I have warm colouring. I reckon a bright spring and these colours make me look like death! Mum called the Quant lipstick my 'heart attack' lipstick!

I also never realised you had to blend anything (cue orange patchy foundation - I guess I was ahead of my time!!)

Strangely, my mum rarely commentated (apart from the remark about the Quant lipstick).

Oriflame! The height of sophistication to me as an 80s teen.

God yes! By catalogue like Avon. I remember a foundation I had which had a shimmer in it. And their Royal Velvet cream

I miss Avon's Quick Touch.

It was a joy for my curly hair, and the smell was...👌🏼

She didn't comment because no one knew any better, we were all clueless! What a fab time to be young 😂

This ad is from 1972. I loved the Miners spit block mascara - it says here it was 14p. i Used to drive my father insane by sitting pulling it all off my eyelashes in the evening!

Darklane · 21/01/2023 19:43

Remember when Max Factor lipstick came in gold metal cases? Not the imitation gold plastic nowadays. Crushed Coral was my favourite.
and also Max Factor the perfumes..Electrique, Hypnotique & Primitif.

Used to wear Revlon Intimate mostly, loved it.

And Coty make up, the loose powder came in imitation tortoiseshell boxes, so posh!

Used to haunt the make up counter in British Homestores in my dinner hour from my Saturday girl job in Woolworths when I was a school with my £1 wages.

BevMarsh · 16/01/2023 13:33

Sensiq. I had a lovely nude eyeshadow.
Constant Caroll- for the nail varnish.
VirginVie- loved the stuff but my student self found it a bit pricy.
I also loved Miss Selfridge make-up.

Miss selfridge had a lipstick called pillow talk years before CT did and it was beautiful

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/01/2023 20:00

Miss Selfridge dressing gown with the lipstick/kiss pattern on it . I had thin thinner polycotton one but there was a plusher thicker one too .

Rina66 · 21/01/2023 20:04

Me too @70isaLimitNotaTarget - I loved that dressing gown, I used to wear it while getting ready to go to discos! Didn't Miss Selfridge do a perfume too, I'm sure I can smell it as I'm remembering this.

This is just the best thread ever- am saying yes yes yes more times than Meg Ryan in Harry Met Sally!Smile

Penguinsaregreat · 22/01/2023 08:50

Yes I just bought what was fashionable and slapped it on. Didn’t we all?
I wore pale frosted pink lipstick, Iced Champ Pink rings a bell. Pink and blue eyeshadow together and blue mascara with blue eyeliner. I probably bought it off my mate who ran Avon! She would point to the new trends in the catalogue and I went along with it!!
It was her that lead me to Arabian Glow.
She wore a lot of bright colours too.

Penguinsaregreat · 22/01/2023 08:52

I’ve just remembered wearing white eyeliner to make my eyes look bigger. Bought that from the Avon catalogue as well.

Haha! I remember a foundation called Touch and Glow by Revlon. It was Mum's and got smeared on my face. No blending! It was called creme beige and was about 2 shades darker than my Ivory toned skin but I smeared it on anyway! Possibly it would have looked better if I knew anything about blending! I am sure I thought I looked fine but those lipsticks!!!!

My mum used to wear Esther Lauder Youth Dew- smelt bloody awful- Her other favourite was called je reviens by Worth

My mum also wore Je Reviens.

And a perfume called Soir de Paris which came in beautiful dark blue glass bottles.

Great thread!

Flex shampoo anyone? It smelt devine!

Penguinsaregreat · 22/01/2023 12:04

Flex shampoo was great.
Upthread someone mentioned peach toiletries. I remember a phase when peach was in. Also apple scented things and strawberry scented products. Boots used to sell a bubble bath which smelt divine. It had a cork top and I think the bottle was oblong shaped. I have no idea who made it but my cousin and I would always go take the tops off the bubble bath and smell the bubble bath whenever we were in Boots. It smelt of strawberries. Absolutely gorgeous.
I think the last peach fragranced product I bought was from Superdrug. My grandma and mum both asked me to buy some peach bubble bath so I thought I’d try it too. It was in the 90s. After bathing in it I came out in a horrendous rash. Never again, that killed it for me.

Comefromaway · 22/01/2023 12:09

I used to love a perfume I got in a gift set from Boots for Christmas. It was called Le Jardin and there was also a “night” version called ale Jardin d’amour

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/01/2023 12:12

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/01/2023 11:49

Henera Henna
Shampoo and Conditioner is tall eliptical shaped bottles (smelled lovely)
And the tubs of henna wax that you applied and were meant to wrap hot wrung out towels on your head because it needed damp heat not dry heat ( clingfilm and a turbiewrap is much easier)

I loved that henna wax treatment, and used to use it every week 🙂

justasking111 · 22/01/2023 12:37

Dewberry, all of it. If body shop put it in a product I had to buy it

Niftythrifter · 22/01/2023 16:41

What about the range exclusive to Superdrug that had foundation in bottles like Mac and Boots used to have Une by Bourjois which O think was more natural.

I can't remember anything in magazines telling us to blend, it was just slap it on...with FINGERS,no fancy brushes back then! Why would we blend when we wore eye shadow on stripes right up to our eyebrows in the 80's? 😂
