Wearing an unflattering outfit to a party

I'm having a total nightmare trying to find a dress for a party in a couple of weeks. It's a dressy ish event so I wanted to go with a long dress but my hips are so enormous that they all look stupid.

I found a dress that looks nice enough but people have told me it pretty much looks awful but I'm tempted to wear it anyway. It is appropriate and it's comfy!

Pic attached of the offending dress. I look better in a super short dress because they make me look taller but they aren't appropriate so there we go.

I've tried on so many now and none of them look wow and it's just making me more and more miserable that I'm such an enormous lump so I give up. I'm either wearing this or not going.

I think you've got a beautiful hour glass figure. Wear it with confidence, only how you feel about it matters.

TapertandEdkins · 28/12/2022 08:00

I think you look absolutely fabulous! It’s a super flattering dress. Whoever told you that it’s pretty much awful doesn’t know what they are talking about!

anxiousatnight · 28/12/2022 08:01

Blimey, you have a lovely figure! I think you're focusing on your hips because they're the widest part of you, but they are perfectly in proportion with your body and not enormous at all. You literally have the perfect hourglass figure.

weirdstuffhappenig · 28/12/2022 08:03

I never comment on style or fashion, but just wanted to say the dress looks amazing, your figure is lovely.

FlowerLilyFix · 28/12/2022 08:03

Can you send another photo with your legs together and then from behind and then I think it’s easier to say if it’s flattering? Based on this photo it looks amazing! A thought could be something fitted at the top and flowing below if you feel self concious?

Newyea · 28/12/2022 08:04

This looks lovely! And you have a great figure. Not an enormous lump! But the dress IS unbalanced (highlights wide hips, as you say). Id say you need to balance it with something big at the shoulders (a big fluffy shrug or similar). Then you’ll create a balanced hour glass shape. Get your hair big too. More up top, in other words. Go and enjoy. Sometimes our nearest and dearest can be so rude, and inaccurate !, when commenting!

You’re standing in a funny way so slightly hard to tell but the photo looks great to me.

Overthebow · 28/12/2022 08:06

The bottom looks a bit tight but it could be the way you are standing. Do you have something that’s more floaty at the bottom to balance out your hips?

FlowerLilyFix · 28/12/2022 08:07

Something like this :

River Island

or this

Mint velvet

jessieminto · 28/12/2022 08:07

I was debating a dress for a Christmas party. It looked ok but was a bit tight. I sat down and got my husband to take a picture from behind. Absolutely not. I wore a less glam but better fitting dress and deleted the photo.

Agree with PP, check it out in other angles but most importantly, you need to feel happy and confident.

Ohheythereitsme · 28/12/2022 08:09

I personally would pick a different style of dress. I don’t think it shows off your figure in a balanced way.

However if you like it that’s the main thing as you should pick something you feel the most confident in.

FlowerLilyFix · 28/12/2022 08:10

This one from Hush is lush!
Hush

FlowerLilyFix · 28/12/2022 08:12

I think with it being this time of year arms covered would look better too. Anyway that’s me done! Like PP said whatever you feel confident in but as it’s the sales there are lots of lovely dresses out there!

sonjadog · 28/12/2022 08:13

I would try for something less tight in the skirt. Like the dresses linked to.

Pickingmyselfup · 28/12/2022 08:13

Floaty but I don't feel happy in this. It's too long as well.

I'm going to go against the grain here, I think people are being polite to you in saying the dress looks fabulous on you.

For my eye it's making you look rather wide and lumpy hips down. Do you have any shape wear that could smooth it out a bit?

I think the reason you've crossed one leg over is to give that curvy illusion, but you won't be stood/walking like that in reality.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/12/2022 08:14

Personally it’s not to my taste, and I wonder if you’d feel uncomfortable in it

i think you’d look amazing in a batwing jumpsuit to balance your shape out a little bit

Supernormative · 28/12/2022 08:14

Your figure is fine but it's just not a great dress. It's very dated and looks a bit cheap. Some of the other suggestions that have been made would be more flattering and modern. I also think a bit more coverage of your arms and shoulders would help balance out the pear shape.

Ohheythereitsme · 28/12/2022 08:15

Second dress is a lot better than the first. Definitely.

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 08:15

2nd dress way nicer than first, looks more expensive

sonjadog · 28/12/2022 08:16

The second dress looks much better than first. Can you take the hem up?

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 08:17

The neckline on the first isn’t working for some reason

Pickingmyselfup · 28/12/2022 08:18

I have definitely, my hips are lumpy and they do stick out loads but I can't make them any smaller.

Dresses linked are a bit £ with it being so close to Christmas.

I just can't find anything I like that suitable and it's making me not want to go. I hate the way I look big style, not helped by a lack of exercise because of an injury.

EnolaJ · 28/12/2022 08:20

Your body shape is amazing OP! Agree with others that the second looks better but I still think the first is lovely.
Have you tried a wiggle dress with capped or long sleeves? You've got the perfect figure for one (Google wiggle dress!)

bravelittletiger · 28/12/2022 08:20

You look great. It's a very sexy dress! I'm not sure why women are made to feel having hips is in some way bad or an issue. Wear the dress you feel good in. If you feel good, you will look good. Simples.

Anyone commenting to say it's not flattering I'm guessing is probably an older person- in the old days women were conditioned to criticise their bodies against old fashioned ideals of whatever "perfect" figure was in fashion at the time. I think a lot of women have internalised that. You really don't have to wear an outfit that hides the fact you have a body.
