Wearing an unflattering outfit to a party

I'm having a total nightmare trying to find a dress for a party in a couple of weeks. It's a dressy ish event so I wanted to go with a long dress but my hips are so enormous that they all look stupid.

I found a dress that looks nice enough but people have told me it pretty much looks awful but I'm tempted to wear it anyway. It is appropriate and it's comfy!

Pic attached of the offending dress. I look better in a super short dress because they make me look taller but they aren't appropriate so there we go.

I've tried on so many now and none of them look wow and it's just making me more and more miserable that I'm such an enormous lump so I give up. I'm either wearing this or not going.

I’m assuming you just want to be told you’ve got a great figure and could wear anything? Well, that’s obviously true.

Having said that, dress one does make you look a bit bottom heavy, if that bothers you.

The long floaty one looks like a bridesmaid dress.

The patterned one looks a bit old fashioned, especially with those sandals.

The short dress and long boots is imo awful.

The first one or the patterned one would be fine.

'I'm a big lump' Then insisting all the dresses are a size 6 really is screaming this.

RudsyFarmer · 28/12/2022 10:36

My best advice is wear something you feel comfortable in and won’t spend the evening pulling down or pulling up.

inappropriateraspberry · 28/12/2022 10:37

Dresses like these are what you need to find.

Dress 2 is awful, for gods sake, wear the first one. Women have hips, shocker.

I'm guessing op is a size 6 because of her height.

Reduced to £110, something like this I think would look show stopping on you.

That one is really stunning, best on the thread by a mile.

MistyRock · 28/12/2022 10:50

Dress 1 is okay but I need another photo to see it properly.
Dress 2 really old fashioned and like a ball gown.
Dress 3 fits really nicely but needs more updated shoes/handbag.

Yes. Dress 2 is terrible.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 28/12/2022 10:53

Could you wear a cropped fluffy bolero with 1? That might balance out the shape of the dress a bit more.

KnickerlessParsons · 28/12/2022 10:53

OP, it's not your hips that are wide ( they aren't that low), it's your thighs - mine are the same.
The second dress you posted is lovely (and you could wear some nice low, comfy shoes under it).

One does need to dress to suit one's figure I'm afraid. 🙁

Floisme · 28/12/2022 10:55

Ok I can see all the pics now (on my laptop). If it's 'dress like the Oscars' then I'd go for 1 or 2.

Unless I was going to be the centre of attention or it was a once-in-a-lifetime event then I would not piss money away on on a post Christmas party dress.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 28/12/2022 11:10

That first one is really not a nice dress imo. Out of the three the third is the one I would go for, for the occasion you've got in mind.

Coooosd · 28/12/2022 11:42

I wore this to an christmas party a few weeks ago, it was really comfortable. Think the style would flatter you

The dresses are a 6 because of my top half and because of my height. I don't have a hope in hell of getting a size 6 trousers over my hips! I'm the ultimate pear shape so I look at my top half and think oh yes I look in good shape but it's the bottom half that I'm very conscious of and always have been. I'm blessed in the bum department and people say they want one like it but I've always wished for a flatter one!

Jumpsuits are great but with my height always too long so I've always gone with playsuits because I don't have the issue. Long dresses also an issue for my height and the wideness of the bottom half. I wanted to wear fake leather trousers and a cropped top because I have semi abs and it looks nice on me personally but that doesn't fit the brief.

I know realistically that I'm not huge because how can I be in the size I am but I look in the mirror and I do feel like a lump in a lot of these dresses.

I'm working on my shape by attempting to build my back, chest and shoulders and lose a bit more weight but that's a long process and I haven't been to the gym in ages because of an injury so that is also not helping my perception.

I'm tired of trying dresses on and having to send them back, I want something that looks really nice but that doesn't break the bank because I will likely never wear it again. £50 is really my limit and I'm waiting for refunds and still need to get a bag and a cover for my arms.

This link hopefully

BungleandGeorge · 28/12/2022 11:55

The first one looks odd because it’s so tight around the bottom- is it how you’re standing? Have you tried it on with control shorts or tights?

wonkylegs · 28/12/2022 12:10

I think 1 is ok but it's not your hips that are the problem but the neckline - it does nothing for you.
You need something to give it's some shape so something like a shrug & a interesting necklace would make it better.
All would be fine however so I'd go with whatever makes you most comfortable as confidence is the ultimate thing that makes an outfit work.

wonkylegs · 28/12/2022 12:12

I'm 4'11 so even shorter than you and proper hourglass (big boobs and hips, small waist) and jumpsuits always make me look ridiculous or childlike. I think they are much harder to pull off when you're short.

wonkylegs · 28/12/2022 12:13

V necks or cowl necks work well with hourglass figures as they tend to pull the outfit to the centre

happyfrogs · 28/12/2022 12:24

Dress 1 is lovely and shows off your hips really well
Dress 2 is a bit frumpy and doesnt do you any favours imo, it hides you
Dress 3 is my favourite, shows off your figure and the detailing is very flattering
Dress 4 seems a bit club wearish

Notbeinfunnehbut · 28/12/2022 12:29

You could go with something (but something) lower cut, V neck to draw attention away from the hips

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/12/2022 13:05

Sorry @inappropriateraspberry but this middle aged woman (ffs) thinks they’re both fucking awful.

Good job no one's making you wear them then.

Itschristmastimeinthecity · 28/12/2022 13:12

You don't need to buy any other dresses OP. The first one looks gorgeous on you!

And why are you insecure about your hips? People are going under the knife for those! embrace them hun!

And finally, some of these dress suggestions are hilarious 😂😂
