Wearing an unflattering outfit to a party

I'm having a total nightmare trying to find a dress for a party in a couple of weeks. It's a dressy ish event so I wanted to go with a long dress but my hips are so enormous that they all look stupid.

I found a dress that looks nice enough but people have told me it pretty much looks awful but I'm tempted to wear it anyway. It is appropriate and it's comfy!

Pic attached of the offending dress. I look better in a super short dress because they make me look taller but they aren't appropriate so there we go.

I've tried on so many now and none of them look wow and it's just making me more and more miserable that I'm such an enormous lump so I give up. I'm either wearing this or not going.

I think you look stunning in option 1. I don’t agree with suggestions to hide your fabulous shape, women have hips! A little black fur bolero/short jacket over your shoulders would balance out the thin straps and give it the finishing touches. Not sure how old you are but option 2 is very safe and with no disrespect a bit frumpy. Option 1 - go for it!

NotStayingIn · 28/12/2022 08:47

I think the second dress looks lovely on you!

BettyCake · 28/12/2022 08:50

You have a lovely figure and you're not a lump! Both dresses are stunning on you. Wear what you feel comfortable in.

I agree with this!

The first dress is really unflattering. You have a lovely figure but that dress does nothing for you. Number 2 is my favourite.

Pickingmyselfup · 28/12/2022 08:57

I'm 36, 5"1 and a size 6/8 in the dresses. All those ones are a 6.

I don't feel 100% in any of them. #1 is more me, #2 feels a bit frumpy and #3 I quite like but it's very tight and not that comfortable. #1 is the most comfortable by far!

I think the 1st one looks uncomfortable. It's the sort of dress that requires constant attention to posture. The 1st and 3rd dress are not as contemporary as the 2nd dress, which also fits you well and looks comfortable.

LazyDaisy22 · 28/12/2022 08:57

You have a lovely figure OP. I think dress 2 looks best on you - classy and elegant yet also comfortable to wear. But whichever you choose, enjoy your party!

Fieldfly · 28/12/2022 08:57

I’m not keen on dress one, not because of your legs but because of the neckline and straps / bare shoulders. IMO spaghetti straps don’t look very ‘classy’, if you wore a fluffy jacket or bolero I think that would be better.

silverclock222 · 28/12/2022 08:58

The second one is best, the neckline balances out your hips. After that the 3rd one as it has wider straps, again giving balance. Sorry the first one (and only because you did ask) is awful. However if that's the one you feel best in then absolutely wear it.

DannydeVitooo · 28/12/2022 08:58

No 2 bit bridesmaid

7eleven · 28/12/2022 08:58

I think your figure is much nicer than you do, but I agree that dress 1 doesn’t flatter you. I like dress 2.

Michellexxx · 28/12/2022 08:59

I like the second one best too.

This is a bit of a wild card, but how about a suit? Some wide leg trousers with a sparkly top and blazer. Or even sparkly trousers!

DannydeVitooo · 28/12/2022 08:59

christ, there’s really nothing wrong with your legs

Fieldfly · 28/12/2022 08:59

What Michelle said!!

Ok size 6/8 then it's just a bad photo so I withdraw my awful comment.

Anyone commenting to say it's not flattering I'm guessing is probably an older person- in the old days women were conditioned to criticise their bodies against old fashioned ideals of whatever "perfect" figure was in fashion at the time.

Don’t be silly. We were far less bothered about how we looked in the 60s/70s/80s than people are now with body shaming and anxiety through constant scrutiny and criticism on social media.

Michellexxx · 28/12/2022 09:04

sorry, I’m lost down a jumpsuit rabbit hole now. But, this is just gorgeous:

HelenHywater · 28/12/2022 09:08

Sorry OP I think the first dress does something really weird to your hips. The second is the best. If you want to wear a short dress, I think you need to go shorter than the third dress. I think the dress should end at the narrowest part of your things.

There are loads of nice party dresses out there - can't you spend some time shopping now?

What's your budget?

stephyybhy · 28/12/2022 09:09

Option 2 looks too frumpy to me!

I like option 3

Magictea · 28/12/2022 09:09

AllOfThemWitches · 28/12/2022 09:10

You look great. It's a very sexy dress! I'm not sure why women are made to feel having hips is in some way bad or an issue. Wear the dress you feel good in. If you feel good, you will look good. Simples.

Anyone commenting to say it's not flattering I'm guessing is probably an older person- in the old days women were conditioned to criticise their bodies against old fashioned ideals of whatever "perfect" figure was in fashion at the time. I think a lot of women have internalised that. You really don't have to wear an outfit that hides the fact you have a body.

In the old days??? Yes, OP we are all old biddies who think you would look better in a crinoline! 😂
