Wearing an unflattering outfit to a party

I'm having a total nightmare trying to find a dress for a party in a couple of weeks. It's a dressy ish event so I wanted to go with a long dress but my hips are so enormous that they all look stupid.

I found a dress that looks nice enough but people have told me it pretty much looks awful but I'm tempted to wear it anyway. It is appropriate and it's comfy!

Pic attached of the offending dress. I look better in a super short dress because they make me look taller but they aren't appropriate so there we go.

I've tried on so many now and none of them look wow and it's just making me more and more miserable that I'm such an enormous lump so I give up. I'm either wearing this or not going.

You need something that skims the hips and flares at the bottom like a 90s style bias cut or a fishtail cut. The second one drowns you completely. I think you've got a great figure but the first dress is just too tight and you look uncomfortable.

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 09:56

So it’s a dressy ish event and you think long dress more suitable? What exactly is it?

Are you considering shopping? Are you taking any advice here or did you just want reassurance to wear the first dress? Can’t work out what you want from this thread as you don’t really reply to anyone’s suggestions. But maybe that’s not what you wanted.

The 4th outfit looks more clubby than dressy.

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 10:01

They’re doing a slot on party wear on This Morning at 12.15

Polkadotpjs · 28/12/2022 10:02

I like the ASOS £16 frock!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/12/2022 10:05

I’m assuming you just want to be told you’ve got a great figure and could wear anything? Well, that’s obviously true.

Having said that, dress one does make you look a bit bottom heavy, if that bothers you.

The long floaty one looks like a bridesmaid dress.

The patterned one looks a bit old fashioned, especially with those sandals.

The short dress and long boots is imo awful.

The first one or the patterned one would be fine.

EmergencyPoncho · 28/12/2022 10:06

I think you could go with 1 but only if you were full on confident, which I don't think you are. I mean a la Kimmy K.

I think the shorter options are better, 3 with black tights and those sandals is the most modern. I'm rubbish in charity shops, but have you looked? There may be bounty from Christmas clearouts... Or good old TK Maxximus. Tight but short will balance you out, the eye is attracted to your hips in photo 1 because the dress is long.

I don't like 2, it's boring and swamps you.

All of the above 🤣

I have 2 weeks and I am considering shopping but I've bought and sent back so many now that I'm all bought out!

We have to dress like we are going to the Oscars so it's dressy and why I thought a long one more suitable.

Short dresses look better on me but I have to wear tights to make my legs look decent which then restricts me on shoes. I already have a closed toe pair of sparkly shoes which are silver.

I do already own a black sparkly velvet playsuit, long sleeved but short loose
legs, maybe it would work with really black tights and the silver shoes I already own?

I'm at work now so I can't try it on and don't have a photo. It's something I feel comfortable in but I normally wear with long boots and I discounted it because it's short in the leg..

You look amazing, were the people commenting it ‘doesn’t look amazing’ middle aged?

As you mature in age you realise that it is important to feel comfortable and confident so yes we possibly are 'middle aged' but we're not the ones posting for advice. The OP should feel happy wearing whatever she wants to. BTW OP the short dress is stunning!

sonjadog · 28/12/2022 10:11

The sparkly playsuit sounds like it might work. Try it on when you get home and post a photo. Or if you wore the short dress you like with the tights and shoes, might it be formal enough?

HideyHoe · 28/12/2022 10:12

If it's an event like the Oscars then dress number 2 or number 3 with black tights and closed toe black heels.

Well no. I really hate the way I look, I am not toned, I have big legs and a bum but a tiny waist which makes me look so bottom heavy.

I've still got weight to lose but I'm not going to make much of a dent in just 2 weeks.

I'm not fishing for compliments, I'm trying to decide if I should just go fuck it and wear something that makes me a look a bit shit or keep looking even though I don't want to.

I must have tried on nearly 10 dresses and I pick holes in all of them. Family and friends say different things to each other which isn't helping either. Some like one dress that another hates!

toucancancan · 28/12/2022 10:14

Dress how you feel best! There's no rule about it needing to be a long dress.

Pickingmyselfup · 28/12/2022 10:15

I like the short dress and boots look, it makes me feel confident but it might not be to others taste and it's definitely not suitable for this event!

Nishky32 · 28/12/2022 10:18

Just scrolled through the pictures- I think your legs look great, but if you are not comfortable you probably won’t enjoy the night.

I love the short dress and boots look. Can that sort of look be tweaked to fit the event.

B1993 · 28/12/2022 10:19

@Pickingmyselfup, if it’s not appropriate for the event, I’d avoid outfit 4 - you’ll stick out like a sire thumb and will definitely feel uncomfortable (even if you’d have otherwise felt confident).

Nishky32 · 28/12/2022 10:20

Looked again at the photo, dress is short and fitted- slightly longer dress, less fitted with the boots?

WhenAllTheCowsAreSleeping · 28/12/2022 10:23

Dress No2 is fabulous

AreOttersJustWetCats · 28/12/2022 10:24

growgrowinggrown · 28/12/2022 08:13

I'm going to go against the grain here, I think people are being polite to you in saying the dress looks fabulous on you.

For my eye it's making you look rather wide and lumpy hips down. Do you have any shape wear that could smooth it out a bit?

I think the reason you've crossed one leg over is to give that curvy illusion, but you won't be stood/walking like that in reality.

Agree with this. I think what people are telling you IRL is truthful. I'm wide hipped too OP, and I'd go for something that flares out a bit to balance out the hips.

If you want to assess how flattering something is, you need to stand in 'unflattering' positions (i.e. not that one with your leg forwards) because that will give you a more realistic picture.

Aworldofmyown · 28/12/2022 10:25

Can you get a jacket to wear over it? You have a great but it's not flattering at the top - hips are fine imo

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/12/2022 10:26

I am a pear. Those dresses suit my shape and are all similar to things I have bought and worn in the past. Not so much the jumpsuit as I’m short waisted. But good call.

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 10:26

Ok, so if it’s Oscar style then I’d definitely channel the Holly Willoughby type dresses above- you have similar figure types and the ‘bombshell’ look will work on you.

Your first dress needs more of a sweetheart neckline for it to work. That straight across cut at that height just doesn’t look right. The other dresses look nice but probably not dressy enough. Depends how much you care?

What is your budget if you are buying? At least with it being Jan there will be loads of sales!

John Lewis have some amazing, show stopping evening dresses.

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 10:27

Virgos Lounge too

inappropriateraspberry · 28/12/2022 10:32

I think an Oscars theme needs something bigger and more ballgown style. Which would balance your shape out.

CiderJolly · 28/12/2022 10:32

Reduced to £110, something like this I think would look show stopping on you.
