Would you wear jeans to an evening wedding reception?

Have been invited to a colleague's evening do ie, essentially a party. When I mentioned to another colleague that I would probably wear jeans, she threw her hands up in horror saying "You can't wear jeans to a wedding!".

Now, I'm talking nice jeans, nice top, jewellery etc, not slobbing about jeans, obv. Of course I wouldn't wear jeans if I were going to the whole day - ceremony etc. But the evening's just a party, non?

So I asked the bride-to-be, who grimaced slightly and said "I wouldn't wear jeans to an evening reception". So I won't be wearing the jeans. But I am really, genuinely surprised by this. Would you think it unacceptable to wear jeans to the evening do?

No never

I wouldn't, personally, but then I like an excuse to wear a dress.

My friends asked everyone t wear jeans to their wedding. It was lovely - so comfortable instead of being trussed up in a dress.

McDreamy · 29/01/2008 20:04

I think I wouldn't wear jeans, smart trousers maybe but no, not jeans. Just doesn't seem right, not sure why but I wouldn't.

Yaddayah · 29/01/2008 20:04

Unacceptable IMO

Sparkletastic · 29/01/2008 20:05

No I wouldn't. Something in the way of a smart black evening trouser maybe but I keep my jeans for pubs / clubs / restaurants. I'd probably go for a sexy frock.

Surfermum · 29/01/2008 20:05

Unless it was a Barn Dance I wouldn't.

Yaddayah · 29/01/2008 20:05

Unless going to nickytwotimes friends which sounds nice.

kindersurprise · 29/01/2008 20:05

No, not unless it was a very casual wedding. Smart trousers, if you cannot be bothered with a dress, but no jeans.

JaneHH · 29/01/2008 20:06

Sorry, I'd never wear jeans to an evening reception. You'll feel really out of place with everyone else in the smart clothes they've been wearing all day, plus imho you really should make an effort for people's weddings... It's a special day and the effort you put into your outfit reflects that...

LadyMuck · 29/01/2008 20:06

No I wouldn't! At least you asked in time though.

SorenLorensen · 29/01/2008 20:07

Someone did to my brother's wedding - she was invited to the whole day, not just the evening reception - civil service. I thought she looked distinctly out of place (it was a very posh wedding).

I wouldn't.

Hulababy · 29/01/2008 20:07

No, I would never wear jeans to a wedding reception, unless being specifically told to do so.

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:08

Wow - I am sooo out of touch!!! Don't go to many weddings, so that's my excuse. Very much appreciate the comments. Think I'll go for a nice dress!

No, there weren't even any jeans at a hippie wedding I went to in a woodland clearing! Sorry.

flowerybeanbag · 29/01/2008 20:10

Never jeans. Everyone who has been for the whole day will be in posh dress or whatever. Wear a lovely dress, or possibly smart trousers.

expatinscotland · 29/01/2008 20:10

No, never

Bluestocking · 29/01/2008 20:11

I went to an evening wedding reception recently and the vast majority of the women were in dresses, some full-length. The bride was in her wedding dress. The men were a whole different story; a lot of them were in "party shirts" lovingly smoothed over beer guts. But no women in jeans, no.

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:11

Glad dp is out tonight, am blushing at my obvious lack of wedding etiquette knowledge !
