Would you wear jeans to an evening wedding reception?

Have been invited to a colleague's evening do ie, essentially a party. When I mentioned to another colleague that I would probably wear jeans, she threw her hands up in horror saying "You can't wear jeans to a wedding!".

Now, I'm talking nice jeans, nice top, jewellery etc, not slobbing about jeans, obv. Of course I wouldn't wear jeans if I were going to the whole day - ceremony etc. But the evening's just a party, non?

So I asked the bride-to-be, who grimaced slightly and said "I wouldn't wear jeans to an evening reception". So I won't be wearing the jeans. But I am really, genuinely surprised by this. Would you think it unacceptable to wear jeans to the evening do?

My SIL, who was obviously at our wedding for the whole day and who had travelled 400 miles especially, went away and got changed our of a perfectly lovely skirt-and-top outfit into jeans (normal, everyday jeans, not nice going-out ones) and a yellow polo-shirt (designer, no doubt, but not smart at all) for the evening. She stands out like a sore thumb on the photos. It didn't ruin our day or anything, but I still don't get why. If I knew I might be uncomfortable at a wedding, given that they were staying at the hotel, I'd have brought another smart-but-comfy outfit, not slobbing clothes.

I do wear jeans a fair bit. But I was thinking well fitted, dark (possibly black), y'know still dressed up. Anyway, have established jeans are no go, so that's immaterial now!

OK - this is on sale. I'm never sure about black at weddings, but I think it's pretty.

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:42

I wouldn't dream of doing the whole day business in jeans, no no. But really thought of the evening as just a big party!

Coast sale my favourite for party dresses - this if you like the foxy 50s look. Which I do.

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:50

It'a at a niceish hotel (not ultra posh), about 150 people, half from the whole day, half just the evening. 5'3, size 10/12.

But I don't wear jeans to church normally, Coddy.

Now I have a vision of you at this wedding with some comedy earrings and a pair of "fun" reindeer antlers on a headband .

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:50

End of April, about £50.
