Would you wear jeans to an evening wedding reception?

Have been invited to a colleague's evening do ie, essentially a party. When I mentioned to another colleague that I would probably wear jeans, she threw her hands up in horror saying "You can't wear jeans to a wedding!".

Now, I'm talking nice jeans, nice top, jewellery etc, not slobbing about jeans, obv. Of course I wouldn't wear jeans if I were going to the whole day - ceremony etc. But the evening's just a party, non?

So I asked the bride-to-be, who grimaced slightly and said "I wouldn't wear jeans to an evening reception". So I won't be wearing the jeans. But I am really, genuinely surprised by this. Would you think it unacceptable to wear jeans to the evening do?

Poor toothy! Why don't you look up some nice dresses online, and let us choose one for you?!

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:21

Oh thank you, but I've no problem finding something - I may even have something suitable already. I just automatically thought nice jeans etc without thinking any further.

Having said that, if you like looking for frocks, feel free to make suggestions!

Moomin - that's a link to a load of exam papers. What kind of weddings do you go to?

Sidge · 29/01/2008 20:25

Nope.

Jeans are for pubs and clubs, not for a wedding reception.

I wear jeans most days and love an opportunity to get dressed up!

Moomin · 29/01/2008 20:25

WOT???!!!
Sorry wrong link

I was trying to show you a really posh pair, acceptable on an occasion such as this, I feel - What do you think?

suzycreamcheese · 29/01/2008 20:25

yummylittlelapin · 29/01/2008 20:26

Definitely go for the frock

My friend wore jeans to a christening and I was pretty horrified by that

Habbibu · 29/01/2008 20:28

ewww - moomin! They are v. classy. I'd have to insist on a spangly shirt, however

Lapin - throws up in horror - never want to watch a scary film/etiquette faux pas within striking distance of you!

Moomin · 29/01/2008 20:30

CaptainCod · 29/01/2008 20:31

depeends ont eh wedding surely?
god i dont care about so much today

SSSandy2 · 29/01/2008 20:31

How often do you get to really dress up though? Maybe you live a more glamorous life than me but, you know, jeans I can wear every day. I think I'd wear a frock too.

Could you not just wear what you'd planned on wearing but with dressier trousers?

CaptainCod · 29/01/2008 20:31

we haev very low key chistengints too
ime the ones ponced up are rather chavvy.

wedding s diffo btu if the couple were a couple of old hippies it woudlnt matter

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:35

Go on then, Habbibu, get searching if you must! Don't really want to spend more than about £50, nothing too fussy or with too busy a pattern! Would prefer knee/calf length. Am 5'3, size 10/12, reasonable norkage.
