Would you wear jeans to an evening wedding reception?

Have been invited to a colleague's evening do ie, essentially a party. When I mentioned to another colleague that I would probably wear jeans, she threw her hands up in horror saying "You can't wear jeans to a wedding!".

Now, I'm talking nice jeans, nice top, jewellery etc, not slobbing about jeans, obv. Of course I wouldn't wear jeans if I were going to the whole day - ceremony etc. But the evening's just a party, non?

So I asked the bride-to-be, who grimaced slightly and said "I wouldn't wear jeans to an evening reception". So I won't be wearing the jeans. But I am really, genuinely surprised by this. Would you think it unacceptable to wear jeans to the evening do?

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:57

I like those too! But really, don't worry too much about finding me something - I don't mind hitting the high street!

Oh - yes, I saw that too, cod, and like it. But 50s style can make a girl feel very foxy.

CaptainCod · 29/01/2008 20:58

no it makes me feel ike a ship in full sail

seperates? wiht a pencil skirt

BITCAT · 29/01/2008 20:59

I think smart jeans or dressy jeans ie sparkly jeans with a glitzy top and maybe high heal shoes or boots to smarten it up would be fine, jeans can be smart if dressed right with the right shoes and top...you should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 20:59

Yep, the M&S one is nice.

Haven't ventured into S & B before - you lot really love shopping don't you?!

I knew someone who changed into white jeans for her wedding reception. They were really nice fitted onces with sparkly sequinnes round the pockets.

I wore white Doc Martens with my wedding dress. Actually they were black ones but I painted them white. Then the paint kinda melted a bit and my feet got stuck together.

yummylittlelapin · 29/01/2008 21:00

That's pretty Cod, but over budget, non?

Toothy, if you live anywhere near Oxford, get thyself to Bicester. I bought a gorgeous silk skirt from Coast there last week for £19

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 21:00

That was my thinking BITCAT. But it seems I was very wrong!

No, not near Bicester. Will probably go to Kingston.

I like pretend shopping!

CaptainCod · 29/01/2008 21:01

how was biscester lapin?

bozza · 29/01/2008 21:02

I wouldn't wear jeans but would wear smart trousers, or dress, or skirt and top. Have you not got a pair of black trousers (although I admit a bit dull) and a nice top?

Habbibu · 29/01/2008 21:03

quite funky

yummylittlelapin · 29/01/2008 21:06

Not bad - bought some shoes (what a surprise) but have decided Jimmy Choo is NOT for me - completely the wrong fit. And seriously overpriced - they had some black stilettos, lovely shape but I have the identical shoes from LK Bennett, £90 and the JC ones were £760 - a mere snip at £380 in the outlet .

There was a divine skirt in Temperley - £120 down from £750 - but I was too fat didn't really like it. DH bought a lovely jacket in Hackett - won't be wearing it much in the desert though .

So quite good, all in all!

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/01/2008 21:07

Are you talking about the Bicester Village discount outlet - is it any good? Would like to go, but went to the Swindon outlet and thought it wasn't that good - is the Bicester one better?

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 21:08

Oh, it's OK bozza, I probably already have something. Habbibu offered, practically insisted in fact, to look for something for me!!!

BITCAT · 29/01/2008 21:09

Well i would ignore what anyone else says, it you that has to wear it all night, why feel the need to conform to what everyone else is going to wear...dare to be different...my mates always wear trousers when we go on a girly nite out...i'm always the odd one out with a skirt on but i like to be different, i feel comfortable so i couldn't care a less bout other people...anyway whatever you wear i'm sure you will look stunning and enjoy yourself!!

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 21:09

Principles top - a bit fussy for me. Pink dress - not my colour I'm afraid!

OP posts:
Habbibu · 29/01/2008 21:09

Well, I had fun, anyway, and got to boss cod around. My work here is done...

Toothyboy · 29/01/2008 21:12

I don't mind wearing a dress, BITCAT. I started the thread because I was so surprised that jeans were considered such a no no, when it really hadn't occurred to me that they would be! The wisdom of mn always wins through!

Thanks Habbibu - you've given me some ideas anyway and inspired me to go shopping and buy something new.

Toothy, there is some good stuff, it's worth a look

lizziemun · 29/01/2008 21:47

Yes, and did.

But it was mine. We waited untill my grandparents went home then changed into our jeans. I did leave my hair up so people could tell who was the bride .

But i probaly wouldn't to someone elses wedding.
