Umm, can we talk about autumn yet?

Look, if you're the type of person still wearing sandals in October, this might not be the thread for you Grin

But... if you are like me and an autumn-loving, pumpkin-spice drinking, leaf kicker, what's on your list?

I'll start:

Flared jeans (I have some, just looking for the right shoes/boots to wear with)
Trench coat
Tweed blazer
Barrel leg cords in a rusty colour.
Deep berry lipstick

I have bought some gorgeous orange hoff trainers in the sale.

i got some flown wide leg black and forest green trousers in the mango sale and I’m excited about wearing them with the trainers and big slouchy jumpers, my long black wool coat and maybe a burgundy beret.

I would like more slouchy jumpers, ideally cashmere!

Umm, can we talk about autumn yet?

Love those @QuentininQuarantino

This is a fun thread! Got really irritated today by one of those e mails from a styling company called Thread that was all about ‘transitioning your summer wardrobe to autumn’ and was full of either obvious ideas (wear a cardigan, who’d have thought of that one?) or IMO stupid ones (wearing a sun dress over a polo neck - I hate that idea and think it just looks like a ridiculous mish mash!). Perhaps I am just a grumpy old woman. Anyone else get these fashion e mails?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 31/08/2022 13:09

I have actually been considering the jumper under a dress combo :/ I don't feel I got enough of a wear of my dresses this summer.

Comvit · 31/08/2022 13:16

I bought this shirt from Sainsbury's the other day. I can't wait to wear it - looks and feels very autumnal.

Floisme · 31/08/2022 13:28

I think there might be something in the jumper-under-a-sundress idea too! It reminds me of the slip-dress over a T shirt look - the first time I saw it, in the 90s, it looked outlandish but this time around nobody bats an eyelid.

But yeah some of the transitional dressing advice is painful. It's like those articles the fashion mags used to churn out on 'How to wear a dress 5 different ways' that literally went, 'Wear with a cardigan, wear with a jacket, wear with a belt, wear with a necklace, wear with the sleeves rolled up'.

MuddlerInLaw · 31/08/2022 13:46

I wore a longish midi dress over dark, wide jeans the other day and had a roomful of compliments. (Hilarious because a very last-minute wardrobe decision.)

But whenever I try the jumper-under-dress thing I always feel ridiculous.

So happy to find this thread! I love autumn, it's my favourite time of year, plus all my best colours in the shops. Dangerous for bank balance Blush

So far I've got a pair of black high top trainers, a beautiful rich navy chunky knit jumper, a thin brown leather belt to wear with dresses, and a denim dress.

Have also ordered a few pairs of trousers on my credit card to try at home - aiming to only keep one or two but trying to break out of my jeans rut. All wide leg style.

Also on the hunt for a new winter coat and hopefully another lovely dress to wear with tights and boots. Also quite tempted by a sleeveless jumper like this one from Whistles - love the look, but not sure how practical it really is...

Umm, can we talk about autumn yet?
Floisme · 31/08/2022 14:16

I think sleeveless jumpers (tank tops in my day!) are totally practical - add warmth without bulk. I like them. I'm not sure if white counts as practical though!

MunsteadWood · 31/08/2022 14:31

Ha! Very true @Floisme

mathanxiety · 31/08/2022 14:34

@LaTangerina
Those are the coats of my dreams.

I'm searching for a pair of faded light blue skinnies (yes skinnies). Autumn for me means dusting off my huge cardigan collection and trying to remember where I last saw my trusty old leather belt.

UrbanMage · 31/08/2022 14:48

How have I only just stumbled upon this thread. I am a huge fan of the "ber" months. I've just bought some clompy Mary Janes from Koi and they will go perfectly with jazzy tights and dresses. I also love love love a jumper and cardi.

I can smell the spiced candles already...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2022 15:41

I bought a couple of black tank tops earlier in the year and have hardly worn them because I'm not sure what to wear underneath them.

Agree re slip dresses. I think a silky slip dress with a t-shirt underneath can look great on slim young things, but not so good on little round 50somethings like myself. I used to wear them, back when I was a mere child in the early 90s.

Floisme · 31/08/2022 15:52

I saw a young woman the other morning, heading out for the day in an emerald green slip dress with dr martens, and it was like being in my mid-30s all over again. She looked great though and I've even been trying to think whether I could capture the essence without copying it.... maybe a deep green tank top? Grin

GeneParmesanPrivateEye · 31/08/2022 17:16

I think emerald green is going to be all over everything this autumn...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2022 17:19

Yes, there's lots of green around.

Brogues · 01/09/2022 07:51

Thanks @Owlsinmybedroom I also found some in ASOS, New Look and Whistles so we might be awash with them in a few weeks and then I won’t want one because everyone will be wearing one haha.

Owlsinmybedroom · 01/09/2022 08:59

We are clearly going to be drowning in cord dresses soon!

I've seen this today on a promo email and I really feel like some autumn female sherlock holmes vibes going on with the outfit in the image, I wish I had the flair to pull it off!

Umm, can we talk about autumn yet?
Partypoooooper · 01/09/2022 09:05

I am that person normally in sandals in October 😂🙈 going to the shops today for the DD school shoes and really want to try out some Birkenstock or Dr marten clogs to ease myself back to boots come the really cold weather.

JaneJeffer · 01/09/2022 11:13

Accessorised with this @Owlsinmybedroom ?

I've seen them worn over long sleeved shirt with either leggings or fitted black jeans & knee high boots.

Oh good! I'm in fashion for once because my living room is all shades of green especially emerald.

Bobbybobbins · 01/09/2022 12:00

I've just bought some lovely leather boots with laces from M&S, some wide leg black trousers for work (want a fitted polo neck to go with) and some wide leg jeans. I wear flats mostly so find wide leg can be too long, so gone for short length. Excited for cooler weather!

dolphinsarentcommon · 29/07/2022 22:23

Does anyone have any clue about what we expect to see in the shops? Colours?

I really hope dresses continue to be popular, in winter weight obviously. I'd also like greens, browns, plums but not holding my breath.

Lots seem to be looking for cord.. it would be a welcome change for me

Yes I’m hoping for long autumn / winter dresses too
