Things you are just fed up with?

I'm really really tired of everything being stretchy jersey. I used to find crisp cotton pj's everywhere but not anymore, it's nearly always thin, cheap jersey now that clings and has no shape. Just why? It's everywhere and usually touted as being 'perfectly soft', but it rarely looks decent.

Also fed up of white trainers, plimsols, slip on footwear, but I do get that these are often comfortable.

Polyester and viscose unlined dresses in lurid patterns that cost as much as lined silk Shock

Oversized blazers and big shoulder pads

@beatrixpotterspencil @runningfromreality

Back when Whistles turned into a one-stop shop for all things polyester, I did bring this up with their sales staff and that given it was a cheap man-made fabric, their pricing was ridiculous. With a straight face, I was told their polyester was french polyester, hence the higher price. Yes, really, I am not making this up.

This was a season or two after Jane Shepherdson left, and Whistles’ output as a whole rapidly declined, not just in terms of quality, but design too. It’s just so blah now, as is so much of the brands in that price point too.

Anyway, back to topic, there’s too much I’m fed up with. A particular bugbear is how quickly Marks & Spencer’s and John Lewis 100& cotton knickers get holes in them - always by the second wash, and sometimes after the first wash. I still have a fee pairs from 10 years ago that are in far better shape than ones I bought a few months ago. Crazy.

sansucre · 27/03/2022 21:45

For those who find viscose shrinks, invest in a steamer - I have rescued many a shrunken viscose garment this way!

AmberLynn1536 · 27/03/2022 22:02

FUCK OFF HIGH WAISTED JEANS / TROUSERS AND TAKE MUM JEANS WITH YOU.

I second this, high waisted mom jeans are utterly hideous all that bulky material around the waist, just awful, thankfully I can now see mid and low rise creeping into fashion, just bought a pair of mid rise flares from River Island, so pleased with them they look great with a fitted vest top and flip flops for summer. My other bug bear is square clothes, nothing is shaped at all, T shirts square, jackets square, it really annoys me, it’s just done that way because it’s cheap not because it’s fashionable, I don’t want to look box shaped in my clothes.

EmmaH2022 · 27/03/2022 22:09

I'm confused by viscose
I had a big gap with clothes buying

I had thought it was a nasty synthetic but then heard it was now soft. So bought a top with it, and it is soft, but it creases in a way that man made fabrics usually don't.

I have a low crease tolerance, as they say. I wonder if there's so much polyester about because most people have that?

I'm glad the cold shoulder tops finally went!

Appliancedesparation · 27/03/2022 22:15

Voluminous sleeves

Tops with hems that dip at the back and go up at the front, thus showcasing my huge tummy whilst hiding my OK bum

Jeans - all of them

ImAvingOops · 27/03/2022 22:19

Dresses with elastics red tops (like boob tubes) that aren't lined - the elastic is really scratchy and uncomfortable, especially in hot weather

EmmaH2022 · 27/03/2022 22:20

Oh I love the "longer at the back" thing!
Appliancedesparation · 27/03/2022 22:20

Oh and cheap gold coloured buttons sewn onto shoulders and sleeves of jumpers for decoration

Appliancedesparation · 27/03/2022 22:22

EmmaH2022 you're probably a more normal shape than me Grin

TellySavalashairbrush · 27/03/2022 22:25

Shackets- never liked them and think most people look like farmer Giles in them.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 27/03/2022 22:35

When a larger version of a skirt or dress is just wider and not actually longer so a tasteful just above the knee skirt becomes indecent on anyone above a 16.

Phos · 27/03/2022 22:51

Dresses that look like an 80 year old's nightie.

GettingStuffed · 27/03/2022 23:02

Dresses with shoestring straps meaning you can't wear a bra with thm, may be OK in small sizes but most people in a 16 , for example, need to wear bras

MrsLegend · 27/03/2022 23:38

Being so bloody overweight!!!!

IndoorsyImogen · 27/03/2022 23:50

'Boxy' and / or cropped tops and sweaters
Swimwear with very high cut legs
Polyester and acrylic

LoveMyPiano · 27/03/2022 23:53

Trainer socks from Matalan (slightly cushioned) stay nicely in place.

I don't even follow "fashion" any longer (if I ever did), so am very out of touch. Can't find anything I like, so have stopped trying.

My darling Grandma influenced my decision against viscose before I knew anything much at all about fabrics (she was an invisible seamstress, and knew lots). To test the creasability, she told me to scrunch a handful of the fabric in my hand and see what the warmth of it did. Viscose is always a fail..... I am sure they treat the fabric in some way, and this disappears in the first wash.

bettertocryinamercedes · 28/03/2022 05:23

@TimBoothseyes

Hideous patterns Fitted tops Tops that stop just on the waistline

All I want is a bum skimming baggy top with decent sleeves.

Where are these fitted tops? All I can find is baggy ass tops which make me look like a sack of tatties.

I wanted decent fitted tops that aren't too long!!

Agree with all of this.

And flouncy floral prints can do one, too.

chatw0o0 · 28/03/2022 07:00

Adding to the list of people complaining about polyester and viscose at non-synthetic prices! I totally get that it's intended to more environmentally friendly than cotton, but I don't want to sweat/crinkle all day long at a wallet unfriendly price.

Leg lengths. I'm 5ft 7, but am starting to look at petite length jeans as regular are always too long. and I don't mind a turn-up, just not every single time!

applewhitenights · 28/03/2022 07:19

@Crimeismymiddlename has it! Agree with everything you said. Impossible to find appropriate plus size work wear.

Also agree about the stupid puffy sleeves on EVERYTHING. I can't find a simple long sleeved top that doesn't have puffy uncomfortable sleeves, or is practically see through so you have to wear something else under neath, or stops short at the waist, or has a stupid slogan on it, or is made of polyester.... Every shirt is a compromise. Need to lose weight too if only for this reason.

RampantIvy · 28/03/2022 07:27

As a tall pear shape I don't want high rise jeans to disappear. Low and medium rise just cut into the widest part of me and are uncomfortable.

Three quarter length sleeves are pointless. They don't keep me warm when I am cold and are too warm when I am hot.

My main bugbear is seeing a style of something I really like only to find it only comes in colours that don't suit me. M and S are particularly guilty of this.

Theredjellybean · 28/03/2022 07:30

You are all right..
Dresses that look like a 18th century milkmaid left a bag at charity shop or a victoriana nighty
Sleeve rage... Ffs.. I am broard with 36d boobs, I don't need a camping tent attached to each arm
Lucky for me I'm doing a year of not buying anything so I have just stopped going to the shops and am sticking with my slightly old fashioned classic look of fitted trousers, pencil skirts and a fitted shirt or cashmere jumper... I feel dull sometimes but f**k it, I know I look good

RampantIvy · 28/03/2022 08:09

I haven't seen these tent like dresses. No-one where I live is wearing them, and I haven't really seen them in any shops except for M and S. I have a couple of midi summer dresses, but they are not tent like at all.

Billandben444 · 28/03/2022 08:12

Re camis - got this at FatFace last year, viscose but washes a dream, close fitting along the top (no bra necessary for decency) and then has a swing to it. So comfy, wear it under shorter tee so you can see bottom bit of cami which disguises my belly.

Re M&S cotton pants - after recommendation on another thread, bought Next cotton mid-rise, £10 for 5.brilliant, much smoother fitting and so comfy.
