Plus Size/Bigger Bodies Chat Thread?

MidSizeMillie · 28/01/2022 08:23

Would anyone be interested in this?

I love the S&B page on here, but I find a lot of threads are about smaller sizes.

Dressing a size 10 is a million miles away from how I need to dress my tall size 18 frame!

I would love a thread to discuss dressing my enormous boobs and hips and disguising my mum tum etc. Also I'm tall / big all over and sometimes have to wear mens clothes as everything is too short! Also a size 8 in footwear and have giant hands Grin. Lucky me!

Also a bit more support and body positivity or body neutrality for bigger sizes, as the S&B page can be quite lacking in that regard ime.

I might post pics of any successful outfits as well, but I didn't want to make this a WAYWT thread, as there is already a lovely one and there is absolutely no reason why plus size can't post on there too. I think I have in the past and may do again.

Anyway, would love people to join me!

Hello!! Can I join?
I’m a tall 16 (top) 18 (bottom)
Pear shaped/hourglass
I was given advice a while back… if tall and pear shaped.. dress in 3rds.. so…. Black Leggings/jeggings, black long vest top then a short coloured top/cardigan/jumper.

I wear black active sport leggings purely for support and bringing my wobbly thighs in.

www.next.co.uk/g26157s5/M38476#M38476

Then this longline black vest top:-

www.next.co.uk/style/st043819/876737#876737

Then, any back knitted jumper or cardigan. I like draw attention away from my thighs so I I like to highlight say my collar bones. So I love Bardot style necklines

I have 3 jumpers similar to to these in different bright colours

www.next.co.uk/style/ls210455/P45047#P45047

I then bought a second hand coatigan from next I live in it

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEXT-CHARCOAL-GREY-TEDDY-BEAR-CROMBIE-COATAGIN-JACKET-COAT-SIZE-16-/265345540114?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

I then pair it up with a large wool tartan/check scarf Joules originally but from eBay. Search for Heyford or large scarf Joules. There’s about 5 colours. I’ve got them all!! Haha. They’re square and I fold in half to a triangle and wear like a bib and wrap around. It that makes sense.

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Large-Square-Check-Joules-Scarf-/125081201926?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

Then. Dressing up to go out. Long floaty or pleated Dress with a denim jacket.

Vickles20 · 03/02/2022 16:30

Just got over covid so feeling ropey. But here’s what I wear most days. Maybe with long length camel or grey knit cardigan or my coatigan

Annoyingly I’m wearing a black shirt Bardot jumper so you can’t see the full effect of the ‘3rd’ rule.

Welcome @Vickles20! And many thanks for the activewear recommendations. I'm off to have a look now.

You're looking great and we'll done to you on losing so much weight! That's incredible.

@Vickles20 incredible weight loss! You look fabulous

DinaDirvla · 03/02/2022 21:03

This is all so useful, thanks everyone! Love seeing real people in real clothes, and I've got ideas from stores I would never even think about.

I've all but given up on the idea of a smart (yet kooky) work dress - caught sight of myself in our security camera and saw that I am very much more boxy and blocky on top than I thought, no empire line or tie waist is helping a breeze block.

I'm thinking of going for more of a suit look instead - just saw that woman on Dragons Den (sorry can't think of her name, think she did Strictly) in a very nice pink two-piece, loose blazer and tapered trousers.

Plenty of blazers around, but I've always had trouble with tapered trousers due to having such short, heavy legs (I have narrow hips and bum but thunder thighs and thick knees/calves - most trousers look "wrong" and are too deep). I had some luck with Yours as they did a shorter leg length, but even they cling in the wrong places and were baggy at the crotch. Does anyone know of any tapered trousers that will be loose enough in the leg but fitted at the waist, for a short arse?

I used to like wide legged trousers but my thighs are so out of proportion that they look weird (tight at the top, windsock from the knee down).

Maverick66 · 05/02/2022 11:30

Just catching up.
@Vickles20 thank you so much for links, pics and advice .
I shy away from work out gear because of my size but will reconsider now.

MidSizeMillie · 05/02/2022 11:37

Hi all!

Still no closer to any nice active wear, but the hunt continues. I think I need to go and have a look in person. Online shopping is so crap for me. I just can't properly envisage how something will look and then I end up with stuff which is not quite right and then forget to return them Blush

Such a waste. I will try Next or maybe see if there's a Sweaty Betty near me. Might have to venture into London

I've also finally caved and rejoined Instagram so I can follow all the body positive and plus size fashion pages. It's been really good. I love iweigh which I think is a Jameela Jamil one. She obviously isn't plus size, but she has eating disorders and is quite anti body shaming etc, which is great

Am loving this thread! I'm a well rounded 20/22 and 5'2" an extreme apple! I'm pediment at 52 and have kinda decided this is the shape I'm gonna be and just get on with it! I do like bright colours and can get away with them in work so tend to go from the odd Popsy dress (flat front or wrap style) or Seasalt Brakeburn tunic type. Love snag tights and trainers, thin knit cardies and bright necklaces. Not exactly cutting edge or trendy!

ihaveonecat · 05/02/2022 12:30

It's a day of pottering and cleaning so I am well stylish GrinGrinGrin

Welcome puppy Smile. Totally with you on "I'm going to be the shape I'm going to be"! Exactly. I might gain weight, I might lose weight, i might stay the same, but me being horrible about my own body probably won't do much to change it other than making me miserable 🤷‍♀️

@ihaveonecat, I like that outfit! Where do you get your tops and leggings?

ihaveonecat · 05/02/2022 13:04

@MidSizeMillie
Leggings https://locketloves.com (casual ones size 14-20)

MidSizeMillie · 06/02/2022 12:24

Thanks cat!

I am wearing my Lucy & Yak dungarees today. They're a bit 'marmite', but I love them, as they're so comfortable - no waistband Grin

I do look a right rectangle in them, but meh

LOVE those dungarees. Style and the colour with the mark grey top. Looks great
MidSizeMillie · 07/02/2022 07:43

Thanks @Vickles20! I love this colour too. It's a good colour on me.

I've been through my wardrobe and am selling a few bits and pieces on Vinted as they either don't fit or do nothing for me. Have a slightly less busy wardrobe now which is great

Wore one of my new Ghost from M&S dresses out today. Down to a size 20 and still going. 10kg lost since this time last year so going slow.
Wore it with snags and DM brogue boots.

I have menopausal zits so scribbled them out Grin

Nice dress @Babysharkdoodoodood. Well done on the weight loss too. Miserable day here , I’m wearing leggings, wrap skirt, huge jumper. Feel very cosy , but look like a big blue slab. Definitely not photo worthy. It’s not exactly news but it is important for me to remember that I can have volume on the top or bottom, but not both!

ClaraTheImpossibleGirl · 19/02/2022 23:43

Some lovely clothes suggestions on here! I'm trying to get some ideas for spending an M&S voucher - I'm in desperate need of updating my post-DC wardrobe now they're a bit older and I'm not constantly covered in sick/ milk/ mud - but now have no idea how to dress Confused

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 20/02/2022 11:42

Been following for inspiration from the sidelines.
You all look lovely.

ValerieDoonican · 10/04/2022 21:22

Hopefully some of you helpful and stylish people are still around. I nee to start again with my clothes. I can see from the pix posted above it would be well worth me trying to get the hang of dresses. I haven't worn a dress since my 60th birthday and that was a long time before lockdown .

I don't need to look madly smart, I do still work but when I am meeting people 'out' it would be at something like an academic conference so no need for sharp edges. Otherwise its just going to the pub or the supermarket Grin

BUT I can't get on with tights. I never had much of a waist even when I was a slim youngster, but now I am an apple in her 60s with a waist rather more than half her 5'3 height, tights are all too - well, tight. And I get painful heartburn pains when I wear them, which somewhat undoes the comfort of a dress.

I have a couple of pairs of leggings with a deepish waistband that I get on with fine, but then what happens at the bottom of my legs? Has anyone cracked this? I suppose boots is one answer but then -- I tend to wear lace-up shoes because of tendon issues, and trainers if I'm walking ay distance.

So - any suggestions anyone? Oh and any more inspiring photos?

Babysharkdoodoodood · 10/04/2022 23:10

@ValerieDoonican Try Snag tights. Utterly brilliant and they don't dig in

I like the dresses from Neverfullydressed. They have some nice bits in their curve range and the wrap skirts are great. Good outlet deals as well. I wear the dresses with plain white trainers.

ValerieDoonican · 11/04/2022 07:59

Oooh thanks babyshark , those tights look well worth a try!

ValerieDoonican · 11/04/2022 08:04

And the photos on the site make me feel like I am definitely underselling myself - what inspiring women!!

Found my people here. I’m 5 7 about size 18 to 20 big boobs big, wide, size 8 feet. Feel frumpy and matronly in everything so enjoyed some of these tips. Trying to avoid ‘fast fashion’ although I’m not perfect at this, recently discovered Vinted which I’m finding good.
