What do you really wear on Christmas Day?

We always spend Christmas with my sister in law. She’s no fashion slouch, but she’d never wear a velvet trouser suit (I imagine as much as anything else because between cooking and serving Christmas lunch it just wouldn’t be feasible). And yet I’ve just seen one touted in the national press as just the thing to wear for Christmas Day!!! I’m mad about clothes so am not advocating wearing onesies or PJs (although we’re all free to make our own choices) but I was just wondering what people who make Christmas lunch happen by cooking and dishing it up IRL rather than on a fashion page actually wear - and if you do it all super dressed up, respect - and how do you manage it?

Very little. I'm hopefully in Tenerife. I'm wearing a pj shorts set, I'm sipping champagne and eating bagels with smoked salmon....x

felulageller · 21/11/2021 17:53

I wore a silk ballgown once- just me DC and my parents.

I usually wear whatevers my fanciest outfit that fits me. The shoes don't last long though.

immersivereader · 21/11/2021 18:05

I reckon I'll buy a powder suit this year

Kanaloa · 21/11/2021 18:07

PJs. Then in the afternoon jeans and a jumper as we go out for a walk.

I think because DH and I have usually worked Christmas Eve & Boxing Day we treat it more as a relaxing time, lie about with the kids playing with their new toys and games and us scoffing too many quality street!

Lizlou85 · 21/11/2021 19:02

If we're going out to family then Christmas jumpers and jeans is the standard for family Christmas day gatherings. The year we got married we told family we were having the day to ourselves and it was the first year Hubby had spent in Pjs. This year with a new born it's another PJ one.

Nice dress, with a butcher's apron over it for the cooking part.

I wear a nice dress always. Never worn anything else I don't think. Love a jumpsuit too

supermummywannabe · 28/11/2021 22:29

Me too! A Mrs Santa dress is the way to go!

FairviewRosie · 28/11/2021 22:32

We don't have a big party on Xmas day. So I tend to go for something like a midaxi dress and boots. Means we can go for a walk, go to church maybe, call in at the pub and also sit about watching movies.

This year I'm considering a boilersuit and trainers.

JaceLancs · 28/11/2021 23:13

Sparkly sweater dress with opaques and slippers
Put some ankle boots on when visiting nearest and dearest
It’s comfortable - no matter on how much I eat and drink
I have 2 a Ralph Lauren stripy version in gold with navy and a phase eight black with diamanté - will try and find pictures

@whattodo2019

My family are really formal so we wear black tie on Christmas Day when we sit down for a very late lunch. Earlier in the day it's chinos and shirts for the men and dresses for the women for church. The women out in jeans or similar for the Family walk. Present opening back into dress for drinks and presents. Late lunch around 4pm ish Black Tie.

Sounds a faff but we love to dress up!!!

Is that you Kate...
ToykotoLosAngeles · 29/11/2021 07:29

Some sort of Scandi-esque jumper like Sara Lund and jeans with fluffy slippers. If we actually went anywhere I'd probably wear my starry print midi and ankle boots but we don't!

TolkiensFallow · 29/11/2021 07:31

I wear something nice and jewellery and make up. A dress usually.

Bonnealle · 29/11/2021 08:07

I’m hosting and do all the cooking, but I always wear a sparkly dress and tights. Unless you’re wearing a ball gown, I can’t see how it’s restrictive when cooking? I do quite a bit of prep so it’s just taking things in and out of the oven and making canapés.

DiamondBright · 29/11/2021 08:24

PJs first thing, then leggings and a festive T-shirt, I'm not leaving the house and I'm cooking so warm and comfortable is the priority.

MrsBerthaRochester · 29/11/2021 09:39

I will wear xmas pjs to have breakfast,buckfizz and open presents. Then I will change into red velvet dress and sparkly heels. Out for a walk and maybe pop into neighbours.
After dinner will change into xmas jumper and leggings. I adore clothes and have xmas market,xmas lunch with friends,xmas day and new years outfit all waiting in the wardrobe.

GodIsAVegan · 29/11/2021 09:45

Lounge wear. Presentable enough to walk the dogs but comfy enough to feel like pyjamas. We stay at home, just us and the kids and dogs, there’s no way I would get even slightly dressed up.

peaceanddove · 29/11/2021 09:47

In the morning while opening presents I wear some lovely PJs that I bought from Etsy with new slippers. Then we always either eat out for Christmas lunch or spend the day with family, so always get dressed up. This year I think I'm going to wear a grey velvet shift dress from The White Company with black, micro nets and black suede ankle boots or a bronze, sparkly shift dress from Hush with same tights and ankle boots.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 29/11/2021 10:06

@SirenSays
Every year that I'm in England for the holidays I buy a new dress for Christmas day, it's a tradition.

Same, since I was little, our parents would buy us a Christmas dress. That would be the special occasion dress for the following year to wear to everything, from doc appointments, mufty day, visiting relatives etc. Used to love showing it off. Special memory of my first smart playsuit and pea coat.
@Lopoem, love the dress.
@HelenaJustina, if you feel it, you're it! Strut strut 🤳.
@kennycat, @hopeishere I'd dress up anyway and they might start doing the same.
@MrsBerthaRochester, love it. I have my Christmas eve, Christmas and NYE outfits ready 💃.

pot39 · 08/12/2021 16:01

Do all make up and get dressed by 8.30 and it has to last all day from church to bedtime. Red sparkly top, smartish black trousers and boots. Slippers inside ( we're talking sheepkin boots) pony tail and apron when cooking. Which I am endlessly. Only 4 of us at home on christmas day. Love it that way.
