What do you really wear on Christmas Day?

We always spend Christmas with my sister in law. She’s no fashion slouch, but she’d never wear a velvet trouser suit (I imagine as much as anything else because between cooking and serving Christmas lunch it just wouldn’t be feasible). And yet I’ve just seen one touted in the national press as just the thing to wear for Christmas Day!!! I’m mad about clothes so am not advocating wearing onesies or PJs (although we’re all free to make our own choices) but I was just wondering what people who make Christmas lunch happen by cooking and dishing it up IRL rather than on a fashion page actually wear - and if you do it all super dressed up, respect - and how do you manage it?

Something comfortable but smart. Usually leggings, dress and ankle boots, I like to do my makeup and make sure my hair looks nice.

Kikkomam · 20/11/2021 08:32

A leopard print jumpsuit. Worn for the last two xmases and will wear again this year. With bright pink nails and silver Birkenstocks because they are comfy. Black boots and a black coat for church with a very bright pink scarf and lipstick. I look like a raddled Bet Lynch but I love it.

ChipButtyCurrySauce · 20/11/2021 09:21

This year it'll be pjs to start, then running gear as we'll do park run followed by tartan dress and heels. I like to dress up a bit!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/11/2021 09:39

I do all the prep either in pjs or leggings and a vest top.
When we're ready to sit down to open presents, I change, on the very rare occasion into a dress, but most often trousers and a glamorous sleeveless top. I pop a pinny on when finishing off the cooking

Mammma91 · 20/11/2021 09:42

Going to see family - jeans and a nice tshirt. Probably with a bit of makeup.
At home - straight into (new) pjs and a dressing gown - after eating my weight in food and chocolate i need something loose fitting! 😂

sageandbasil · 20/11/2021 09:43

I hosted last year and wore a LBD with tights. After dinner I got straight into my pjs

pourmeanotherglass · 20/11/2021 09:49

Depends on my plans for the day, but normally smart casual.
This year its just the 4 of us, Ill be cooking, and we'll probably go to church in the morning. I'll probably wear something like a nice jumper dress with leggings, boots and christmas earrings. Dinner wont be over- complicated, just a nice small roast for me and DH with loads of roast veg and linda mccartney sausages for the teenagers.

My family are really formal so we wear black tie on Christmas Day when we sit down for a very late lunch. Earlier in the day it's chinos and shirts for the men and dresses for the women for church. The women out in jeans or similar for the Family walk. Present opening back into dress for drinks and presents. Late lunch around 4pm ish Black Tie.

Sounds a faff but we love to dress up!!!

Is that you Kate? 👸
notacooldad · 20/11/2021 10:03

If we are going out for a meal on Christmas day, like we did last year will put an expensive but favourite dress on.
If I'm at home, just an everyday dress.
This year it will be jeans, t shirt and Van's and my leather biker jacket as I'm working Christmas Eve, Christmas day, Boxing day and the following day.

ArabeI · 20/11/2021 10:33

We're going out for dinner, so I have a nice formal-ish dress, and low suede heels. I have a slightly shimmery pleated skirt for Boxing Day with plain jersey top (another meal).

New year (you didn't ask!). I need to check if a dress I liked (WYSE) is back in stock.

santabetterwashhishands · 20/11/2021 10:35

Christmas jumper or Christmas tshirt and a pair of jeans

foodiscomplicated · 20/11/2021 10:44

Sweaty Betty Gary yoga pants and a sparkly top and heels or slippers. I find black Gary pants are comfy and dress up surprisingly well!

007Stocko · 20/11/2021 11:08

I just wear regular clothes whilst preparing and cooking Christmas Dinner then get changed into something a bit smarter when its getting close to being served.

Not like dressed for a posh dinner but just smart casual, maybe a bit more Christmasy if I have something.

shinynewapple21 · 20/11/2021 17:13

In the past where I've hosted I've worn PJs to open presents, then shower and put on scruffs for preparing lunch. At the point DH went out to collect our parents I would quickly change into thick tights, sparkly slippers and above-knee jersey dress. Brush hair, and add apron to dish up dinner .

Last year it was just DH and I with DS and GF in the evening . I wore jogging bottoms and a Christmas sweatshirt . TBF I don't think there was a day last winter when I didn't wear jogging bottoms so at least the sweatshirt was an effort .

This year we are eating out (hopefully anyway) so I shall wear a dress. I ordered a sparkly tunic dress from Hush I thought would be perfect but it was too big and longer than I expected. I'm not sure if I'm going to reorder in another size or get something else .

slipperyeel · 20/11/2021 17:35

I usually dress up a bit - I find a jersey dress as comfortable as anything else anyway.
This year it will be a black max Mara dress, tights, jewellery and probably slippers

Those pants are amazing, so flattering and so comfortable
senorafridgidaire · 20/11/2021 18:00

Last year I wore a rosa bloom sequin leotard and fishnets. Just throw a pinny over the top while you're cooking!

ChristmasTreeBee · 20/11/2021 19:11

Depends on if we have guests.

When we have guests we all make an effort, nice dress (I have two a black one and a really dark green one) I don’t get dressed until 90% of the food is done.

On our own new pj’s Grin

irregularegular · 20/11/2021 19:22

A dress usually. Comfortable but nice. Something that says more mum than glam. Midi length. I bought one from hush last year and will probably wear again. The most similar thing on this year's site is this one www.hush-uk.com/edolie-tea-dress-painted-multi-floral/004336-3786.html

I also have some flat velvet pumps with bows that I have had for decades and only wear at Xmas these days. They are probably a bit dated now but they work and it is tradition!

irregularegular · 20/11/2021 19:25

Wow I have never heard of anyone wearing black tie for a Xmas dinner at home.

Dogscanteatonions · 20/11/2021 19:30

I host and do all the cooking. About quarter of an hour before dinner is ready I nip upstairs and change into something sparkly

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 21/11/2021 17:25

I'm wearing this OP. I always dress up, if hosting, I pre-prep a lot the day before and sort of dress up in the morning but not my main dress, as in not jeans/ leggings/tracksuit. Then wear my dress through out from just before lunch.

What do you really wear on Christmas Day?
SenecaFallsRedux · 21/11/2021 17:33

I'm in the US. We always do smart casual for Thanksgiving, and similar for Christmas if we have guests. If no guests, we dress very casually. In my family, Thanksgiving is the big family gathering, and Christmas is more low key.

QueefofSheena · 21/11/2021 17:40

Velvet jeans or leggings (stretchy) with something sparkly on top, layers though as I get so hot cooking.

Vicliz24 · 21/11/2021 17:42

It will be running gear with a Santa hat for park run then jeans and a jumper to walk the dogs then I'll keep the jumper but put my trackies on for the rest of the day . Just me and DH for Christmas Day. Boxing Day we host but Christmas jumper and trackies is ok for that too . DS adult came one year in his onesie. No dressing up here . We will be comfy for the food mountain and subsequent coma .
