What do you really wear on Christmas Day?

We always spend Christmas with my sister in law. She’s no fashion slouch, but she’d never wear a velvet trouser suit (I imagine as much as anything else because between cooking and serving Christmas lunch it just wouldn’t be feasible). And yet I’ve just seen one touted in the national press as just the thing to wear for Christmas Day!!! I’m mad about clothes so am not advocating wearing onesies or PJs (although we’re all free to make our own choices) but I was just wondering what people who make Christmas lunch happen by cooking and dishing it up IRL rather than on a fashion page actually wear - and if you do it all super dressed up, respect - and how do you manage it?

Some sort of comfy jumper dress

TheCheesyBakedBeanGetsGlam · 18/11/2021 21:41

Comfy trousers (to accommodate room for my dinner!) and some kind or Christmas jumper. Usually some novelty earrings or something too. Nothing as elegant as a velvet trouser suit for Christmas, although I do quite fancy one for some other more glamorous occasion!

It entirely depends whether I’m playing the part of Lady Mary or Mrs Patmore. My concession is taking off my apron before sitting to the table.

@whattodo2019

My family are really formal so we wear black tie on Christmas Day when we sit down for a very late lunch. Earlier in the day it's chinos and shirts for the men and dresses for the women for church. The women out in jeans or similar for the Family walk. Present opening back into dress for drinks and presents. Late lunch around 4pm ish Black Tie.

Sounds a faff but we love to dress up!!!

Is that you Kate? Grin

Not last year but the year before, we hosted 18 (ha, what a wild Christmas) I wore a fitted, but wide leg sequin suit with a cami under for when I started sweating over gravy and having my head in the aga!

I love getting dressed up and think Christmas is the best day to go all out. This year I think I'll wear a dress with tights as going out for dinner so know I need something comfy.

PJ's until I have to. Then jeans and a top usually. I don't dress up. . I

If we are going out, either to a restaurant or friends/family I'd dress up in either a nice dress or trousers and sparkly top. If I'm at home and cooking then it's comfies. Last year I wore yoga pants and my Foo Fighters Christmas t-shirt.

I did see a lovely green velvet dress in Hobbs this week and was very tempted. I might get it for our usual New Year's Eve curry night with friends.

It depends on what mood I'm in in the morning. Sometimes jeans and t shirt, sometimes glamour. Even though I can be quite scruffy I hate wearing pyjamas when cooking however, reminds me of being unwell.

rrhuth · 19/11/2021 03:47

The idea of a Christmas outfit doesn't compute in my brain, so just whatever I choose from the usual non-work stuff.

ballroompink · 19/11/2021 06:49

Smart casual but comfortable! We always go out for a walk so it needs to be reasonably practical, and I hate sitting around in uncomfortable clothes. Last year I wore a Hush dress that I've had for a couple of years.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 19/11/2021 06:50

Comfy jumper dress and tights
Slippers
Christmas earrings

justaddcandlelight · 19/11/2021 06:52

I dress up for Christmas Day. Not sure what I'll be wearing this year though

daisyjgrey · 19/11/2021 07:01

Swimming costume first thing for a dunk in the sea. Joggers/hoodie/dry robe/wellies for schlepping the dog on the beach for a bit with a croissant and a bottle of Prosecco.

Pyjamas after shower for presents.

Something comfy but smartish for cooking and lounging around. Probably a dress and tights, more room for expansion than jeans!

Pyjamas again in the evening for cheese and snacks and scrabble.

RoyKentsHairyBack · 19/11/2021 07:22

One year I dressed up for Christmas Day / my brother laughed at me for hours the swine (gentle sibling mockery not spite btw)

Usually Christmas jumper and joggers tbh. My dm looks nice but then she always tends to dress well so it's just her normal really.

Dd1 in hot pants and crop top, Dd2 in sports kit, dh in jeans and t shirt.

StCharlotte · 19/11/2021 08:33

I'm cooking so I'll be wearing a navy embroidered cotton top which has some sparkle and slim fit jersey trousers and slippers.

TuftyRusty · 19/11/2021 09:46

I dress up a bit - think it will be a sparkly long sleeve dress this year with tights. It’s slightly stretchy/soft material so comfy but also looks good.

actiongirl1978 · 19/11/2021 09:50

I always wear a dress, tights and flat shoes. I always cook.

I blow dry my hair and put make up on as soon as presents are over (so usually about 6.30am). Walk the dog in scruffs, then back to get dressed into nice clothes.

We all make an effort. We don't go out much, no Xmas parties or anything and so it's the one opportunity to make an effort.

CountryCob · 19/11/2021 10:04

Red jersey day dress, pjs am and then probably jeans as doing animals. Find having the time to do make up am hard, tend to get up early and do that. Don’t usually wear make up when not on evening etc out or work but I do like to have some on for family days with husband to keep the romance alive…

CountryCob · 19/11/2021 10:04

@actiongirl1978 that is pretty much my routine

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/11/2021 10:05

The new pyjamas we will all undoubtedly receive Grin

coogee · 19/11/2021 10:24

It depends where we are. Last year, just us at home so jeans and a jumper. The year before, a red bikini and a Santa hat.

DameMaureen · 19/11/2021 10:32

A shower etc , face done and fresh or new loungewear . Everyone else the same . Could not be arsed to get dressed up to be at home .

Crimeismymiddlename · 19/11/2021 11:00

Jeans and a nice top or jumper. The rest of my family wear tracksuits!

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 19/11/2021 11:16

Christmas Day I'm at work I'll be dressed as an elf.
Boxing Day will be our Christmas Day I'm cooking I'll be in jeans and a tee shirt and a sweater if I get a bit cold.

SirenSays · 19/11/2021 12:11

Every year that I'm in England for the holidays I buy a new dress for Christmas day, it's a tradition.
