What do you really wear on Christmas Day?

We always spend Christmas with my sister in law. She’s no fashion slouch, but she’d never wear a velvet trouser suit (I imagine as much as anything else because between cooking and serving Christmas lunch it just wouldn’t be feasible). And yet I’ve just seen one touted in the national press as just the thing to wear for Christmas Day!!! I’m mad about clothes so am not advocating wearing onesies or PJs (although we’re all free to make our own choices) but I was just wondering what people who make Christmas lunch happen by cooking and dishing it up IRL rather than on a fashion page actually wear - and if you do it all super dressed up, respect - and how do you manage it?

The closest I've ever come to cooking Christmas dinner is ordering the whole shebang from M&S and just bunging it in the oven to get hot. Otherwise, we either eat out or are guests at someone else's home. So I always, always get dressed up as I love clothes so much.

This year on Christmas morning I'll wear some lovely, paisley silk mix PJs from Etsy with sparky slippers from Mint Velvet. Then we're going out for Christmas lunch to a gorgeous fine-dining pub with my cousin and her family. So, I'll wear a loose, bronze glitter shift dress from Hush with black, micro-net hold-ups and black velvet ankle boots.

T-shirt, hoodie and joggers. Might get my Mariah Carey hoodie out Grin

I do all the cooking (another story) so I wear something nice but comfortably for that. Once everything's under control (turkey resting etc.) I have a quick shower and change into something a bit more dressy while DH lays the table. This year it's going to be a velvet bardot top from Vinted (fantastic site) and smart trousers, preferably with an extending waist.

Jeans snd a t shirt with a fleece if it is cold. We don't do dressing up as we don't do Xmas.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 19/11/2021 20:22

I often used to wear a velvet top and trousers combo. Trousers were lovely elasticated ones to allow expansion. I often wear a buffet dress and thick tights now, again allowing room to grow but still looking smarter than usual.

Immaculatemisconception · 19/11/2021 20:26

PJs

bananaboats · 19/11/2021 20:26

I've bought a red tartan dress ill be wearing with black tights (& slippers!) Just me and DH on Xmas day

Lopoem · 19/11/2021 20:30

I live in dresses, so Christmas is no different apart from it's usually Christmas themed. Planning to wear this one this year.

What do you really wear on Christmas Day?

We dress up for Mass, everyone will be super smart even though it’s 9am. That’ll mean a dress or skirt and heels. I might sling jeans on for a muddy/cold walk after lunch or just wellies and coat over the dress this makes me feel but not look like a model in a magazine
Will also be smart for Boxing Day with family and the big Family Party at my aunt’s.

Pbbananabagel · 19/11/2021 20:39

Clean Christmas pj’s that go on after showering

Spiceup · 19/11/2021 20:40

A loose or Jersey dress

goose1964 · 19/11/2021 20:41

I have a velour tshirt dress which I wear. DH does most of the cooking so I don't get hot and bothered. I only do the starter which takes all of 5 minutes. I have done most of the prep so I am not being lazy. I don't help DH because he's a control freak and everything I do is wrong.

caringcarer · 19/11/2021 20:52

A dress for Xmas day. I just cook in leggings and tunic then go up to change before eating whilst others set table and dish up

Ddot · 19/11/2021 21:15

New dress and a pinny, doesn't everyone 🤣
I am a messy cook!

Hetyanni · 19/11/2021 21:16

Christmas t shirt (oversize, white with tinkerbell in a Santa hat - tres classy) with gold leggings. Fluffy Christmas socks. Comfy but festive. I do all the cooking.

BeyondMyWits · 19/11/2021 21:23

Jeans and a nice top, maybe a Christmas pinny on top

Jumpingintochristmas · 19/11/2021 23:18

We get a bit dressed up.

Blow dry hair on Christmas Eve before going out for dinner to save time Christmas morning.

Open presents in pyjamas then quick shower, a boost of dry shampoo and a few curls through my hair to tidy it up. Usual daily make up takes 10min. I usually wear a maxi shirt dress with tights… tights have been known to get ditched if I have a hot flush Xmas Blush

kennycat · 19/11/2021 23:19

I’d love to wear something amazing but the rest of the family just wear any old shit and I’d feel totally over dressed. I’ve a good mind to take myself off to someone else’s house this year where the people aren’t like that…
I don’t mind cooking when I get there either!

nancy75 · 19/11/2021 23:22

We always go to my parents for Xmas dinner, they like to have their house a similar temperature to the sun. I usually wear a summer dress (which looks just great with the coat I wear to get there & back!)

megletthesecond · 19/11/2021 23:27

Tracksuit bottoms and a sweater. It's just me and and the dc's.

KimmyKimdoo · 19/11/2021 23:40

Start with a nice long, heavy white silk dressing gown whilst I drink coffee and the kids open presents. Change into a totally impractical but stunning red dress, hair done and red lippy on! Family popping in, taking photos with relatives. Cook Christmas lunch dancing around the kitchen in my dress with slippers on and a glass of bubbly! After lunch, layer up with my posh coat, nice scarf, big winter boots for our walk/ drink at the pub. Then into Christmas pyjamas for the evening!!

yellowflowersintherain · 20/11/2021 07:46

@lopoem that dress is cute, where is it from?

lazylinguist · 20/11/2021 08:12

I'm 50 and I've never cooked Christmas dinner (dh does it when we host, but mostly we're at extended family's houses). We all wear smart-casual ish stuff, some of us with a bit of festive sparkle. I wear trousers and a smartish top, or a light knitted dress and boots etc. Presents (except stockings) not opened until everyone has got dressed and had breakfast.

hopeishere · 20/11/2021 08:12

We always got dressed up as kids etc. and once I got together with DH I would still have done it. However his family don't bother at all and I began to feel foolish all dressed up. Last year I wore jeans and a nice jumper. But we were outside for any socialising bits!

No idea what I'll do this year. Probably jeans and a nice top.

PinkTonic · 20/11/2021 08:26

@HundredMilesAnHour

Is that you Kate? Grin

Definitely not her, anyone really smart would know you never wear black tie before six
