Hi. I'm 43, bit overweight and short and I hate my clothes!
Never know what looks nice on me? Please help! I wear a lot of black, navy, grey or I have very patterned dresses from White Stuff.
I just don't know where to look or what would flatter me?

I bought these jeans and they're great quality. They look like a similar shape to the ones in the photo with the teddy coat. Love the second more colourful dress too. Wear them with shoes and not boots, unless they look good under the trousers as you can't really tuck them in to anything.

cheeseisthebest · 30/10/2021 21:55

I've never been into Roman so never seen their actual clothes!

A top with straight-leg jeans, or mom jeans for under your teddy coat as well.

cheeseisthebest · 30/10/2021 22:03

@CeeceeBloomingdale

Sorry.

Not keen on the dress. My mum loves Roman. Sorry again.

Do you wear a lot of dresses? I live in jeans most of the time.

I think the jumpers you linked to are all fine knit. What about slightly chunkier like the one linked? Or a sweatshirt!

Actually since working at home I do wear jeans more. That jumper looks a bit warm! And a bit short on my fat stomach!

I got a couple of those jumpers last season and they aren't cropped on me but are shorter than most, which works well with high waisted jeans. They are quite loose knits so not that warm, similar to wearing thin fine knits really. I wear sweatshirts a lot and long sleeve t shirts and tops. I have a few that look blouse like but are crepe jersey so easy to wear but they look smarter.

Pbbananabagel · 30/10/2021 22:13

Buy second hand to get better quality
Invest in a good pie of ankle boots and some plain white sneakers to wear with everything instead of ballet pumps
Try a suede biker jacket if you don’t like leather
Try a chunky statement necklace with your cami and cardi combos

Pbbananabagel · 30/10/2021 22:14

Haha pair not pie

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/10/2021 22:15

I would look like a sack of spuds in the dress you've linked, the shape would be off for me. If it works for you then it's fine but I think it needs a chunky biker boot and thick tights, not leggings. I wear sweatshirts like that though, with jeans. Generally speaking I go plain with dresses and only do pattern in my top half. Rarely floral as it makes me look frumpy. I'm trying to get away from animal points as I have worn them to death for years so that might ge colouring my view. Do you know what colours suit you?

ouchmyfeet · 30/10/2021 22:19

Love that green dress @cheeseisthebest
Give it a go, what's the worst that can happen??

I am the same age as you and much fatter. Also feel a total frump but hoping that losing a chunk of weight will help, it normally does.

Have been coveting these boots for a while: www.clarks.co.uk/c/Orinoco-2-Lace/p/26153928

Lots of colours, I like the olive

PrincessPaws · 30/10/2021 22:22

I think I must be the only person that thinks pretty much everything on the hush website is hideous, shapeless and has no style at all?! The whole website screams frump to me. I think it's very personal

cheeseisthebest · 30/10/2021 22:27

I've not worn animal prints at all!

I'm with you there. I've had the occasional decent piece from there (knitted trousers, Jersey blazer) but nothing in the last 5 years.
CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/10/2021 22:32

Fair enough, I was just saying I have worn them a lot for years so have been trying to get away from them myself.
cheeseisthebest · 30/10/2021 22:33

Yes sorry I just meant I could try them now!

PrincessPaws · 30/10/2021 22:35

Thanks @CeeceeBloomingdale, I keep seeing it recommended but have never seen anything in there that I would consider getting. I know I'm not the most stylish person in the world, but jeez half of it looks like someone has rummaged through a jumble sale and thrown it on a model

ouchmyfeet · 30/10/2021 22:38

I agree re hush @PrincessPaws

I'm sure it all looks fabulous if you're a statuesque size 8, but it looks like frump city for the rest of us

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/10/2021 22:39

I think if you've not really worn leopard print before, a scarf or shirt would be a way to ease yourself into it. Or a skirt with a plain black jumper? I've got this - it's nowhere near as short on little me!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/10/2021 22:40

@cheeseisthebest yes, always good to try something new!

@PrincessPaws I think it's an overpriced version of Next which I also find overpriced. And boring. And frumpy.

holidaynearlyover · 30/10/2021 22:42

@wombwithawiew

Just order some stuff to try different looks.

Don't get a leather jacket they look terrible on most people.

I quickly looked on Hush on JL and what about any of these looks - you can obviously mix and match, sometimes even a new pair of boots can help.

I've just bought this! An expensive evening clicking on this thread 🤣
The4teddybears · 30/10/2021 22:51

The blue dress is ok. But with some medium heeled ankle boots and a bright scarf to lift it a little.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 30/10/2021 22:53

What about some mom jeans, turned up, ankle boots. Kitten heels work well. Boxy shaped tops/ jumper to go with ? I like tapered trousers as I think they’re flattering.

Skinny jeans with high boots and a chunky jumper go well too.

NFLwidow · 30/10/2021 22:54

What do you want to wear? How do you want to look? It’s ok people suggesting things but if you don’t like it then it’s hopeless. Lagenlook clothing suits all shapes. You can rock it whatever size. I’m a size 10/12 but have friends who are size 16/18 who have exactly the same lagenlook dresses. They fit to your shape and you rock it your way.

Leftbutcameback · 30/10/2021 22:57

If you've not got much money and want to experiment with your style then charity shops are brilliant. I would say look for something more fitted on the top, and more modern shapes on the bottom. How do you feel about pattern and colour?

Leftbutcameback · 30/10/2021 22:58

Agree with PP that a knitted / jersey blazer is a nice piece to have. It can be slimming and flattering.
