The 'old' lady style and beauty thread

thisenglishlife · 29/06/2020 21:05

With 'old lady' not being an offensive term, but rather referring to women with knowledge, refined taste and other positive qualities

Show off your pretty things and link to dresses, slips, twinsets, pearls, stockings, big knickers, cross your heart bras, prestige scents, retro style makeup, soap and everything else in between

The rose lasts longer than the original and is really lovely for summer. Will probably buy a bigger one. Love the original but it fades too quickly.

Canklesforankles · 24/07/2020 00:13

Tootreeticki good question and perhaps it’s just me but I find when I wear bikini briefs my tights roll down over my belly into the groove where the top of my knickers is.
When I,m wearing big pants, the top of my pants is nearer the top of my tights and the tights sort of stick to the cotton pants and stay put if that makes sense?

High waisted tights are the answer. Next do some, so comfy.

OLGADEEPOLGA · 24/07/2020 09:36

Miss Dior (the original) is the most beautiful old lady scent

dontcallmelen · 24/07/2020 13:02

I was in M&S yesterday & spotted quite a few dusting powders, soaps, lotions etc & thought of you all I didn’t have time to have a good mooch unfortunately.

flouncymcflouncerson · 25/07/2020 01:02

I’ve not been able to do proper mooching about shopping: out shops only opened up recently but I need to be kid free for that kind of thing.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 25/07/2020 02:24

This thread is an absolute joy, so nice to know there are tonnes of others embracing funky grandma style!

Thank you to a PP for the dusting powder bargain. I was having a lovely reminisce with friends about memories of our nana's super glamourous dusting powders earlier this week. Now I can surprise them both with fancy puffs of their very own!

Greenpop21 · 25/07/2020 22:57

@CoffeeAndEnnui what a lovely friend you are.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 26/07/2020 01:09

It's sweet of you to say so but I'm actually a bit of a grumpy cow. Hopefully, the dusting powders will make up for itSmile

Greenpop21 · 26/07/2020 11:14

Lol so am I Grinthanks for making me feel better!

Good find! I like the final tweet best. Woman after my own heart!

Those are all my favourites too (well I did get sick of Youth Dew - it was all around me when I bought it!). This was from an era when they made perfumes not sickly sweet scents for mad four year olds!

thisenglishlife · 28/07/2020 13:10

Haha @Deathraystare
I think that the lovely ladies on the perfume thread call them 'pink mingers'

Can't remember who mentioned Powell craft nighties, but just wondered if anyone has one of their dressing gowns and what the sizing is like please as they say "one size" ? I'm about a 42 bust so not sure they would be generous enough. I've just looked on their size chart and can only find children's sizing.

thisenglishlife · 31/07/2020 09:34

Contact them:
powellcraftboutique.com/pages/contact-yus

Some of the night gowns, not dressing gowns, go up to 47 inches.

I am not surprised! Anyone with taste must despair at the crap they call 'perfume' nowadays!

thisenglishlife · 31/07/2020 12:08

I think that the likes of cheap and cheerful celebrity scents such as those by Paris Hilton, Jade Goody, Victoria Beckham, etc... doing well has meant that 'serious' houses have competed with increasingly sweet, soft, foody scents.

Never heard of Powell Craft( strange name) but love the look of their nightwear. Thanks for the link.

Greenpop21 · 02/08/2020 08:33

I have been binge watching Anthe Turner Perfect Housewife episodesBlush and have refolded all if my towels. Why does it make me so happy? I’m not even a housewifeGrin

ComeBackIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/08/2020 08:41

Ha! I certainly don't measure up to Anthea's standards of housewifery!

I'm glad this thread popped up in Active again as I had fallen off it. I am feeling very mellow as I spent yesterday evening hand sewing, which is always so restful. I love the look of the Bronnley dusting powder and may add it to my birthday list, too.

VictoriaBun · 02/08/2020 11:35

Greenpop21
Where was it on please ?

ChicCroissant · 02/08/2020 11:46

Lovely dressing gowns on that Powell Craft website!

I was also wondering where you saw the AT programmes, I watched them at the time and still do that t-shirt fold that I saw on there.

Grumpymum789 · 02/08/2020 13:12

Just bought Sainsbury’s Cotton full briefs... OMG, the comfort. I’m a complete convert to the full in belly warmer knickers now!
