With 'old lady' not being an offensive term, but rather referring to women with knowledge, refined taste and other positive qualities

Show off your pretty things and link to dresses, slips, twinsets, pearls, stockings, big knickers, cross your heart bras, prestige scents, retro style makeup, soap and everything else in between

I got a talc mitt as a teen, could do with one of those in the hot summer.

I would love to test the Rose 4711, will look out for it.

MotherofPearl · 14/07/2020 22:43

Those cloths are beautiful dont.

MotherofPearl · 14/07/2020 22:45

You've got me looking at dusting powders. I'm ordering this, especially as it's on sale:

I love these threads but you all post so much lovely stuff that I don't have tine to read it all and enjoy - I need to allocate Mumsnet time in my day

I love a powder compact - Estée Lauder used to do lots of versions of these

Today my Penhaligons lip balms in Rose and Violet arrived plus rollerball perfumes - I'm planning to give these as my secret Santa gifts

MotherofPearl · 15/07/2020 10:32

Not to be outdone by dont, I have photographed the beautiful white tablecloth I inherited from my DGM. I sometimes use it if I'm having people round for afternoon tea.

I wonder if anyone has any tips for removing/reducing the yellowing of the white cotton lace edging? I don't want to risk bleach, especially because the fabric itself seems to be a very thin, fine linen.

Gorgeous cloth !

campion · 15/07/2020 10:54

Try soaking in a lukewarm solution of Daz (powder not liquid) for 24 to 48 hours @MotherofPearl

I did this with a selection of my Late MiL's cloths and was amazed at the difference.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/07/2020 12:11

Campion - I thought you were offering bathing advice for a moment!!!!

dontcallmelen · 15/07/2020 12:17

Ohh MotherofPeal beautiful cloths, yy the soaking in soap powder not liquid did that with mine & if you can hang out on the line in the sun 🤞🏻

MotherofPearl · 15/07/2020 12:58

Thanks very much for the soaking in Daz advice; will certainly give that a go. And if the sun ever shines again here in the drizzly NW (not complaining, I love cool/rainy weather!), I'll hang it up outside for a blast of sunlight.

campion · 15/07/2020 13:37

Ha ha ha @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie. I did think I should've put an 'it' in there after I'd posted!
I'll stick with my L'Occitane almond shower oil for the more personal stuffGrin

thisenglishlife · 15/07/2020 14:20

Beautiful embroidered tablecloths @dontcallmelen (what treasures)

Is saw that talc with the puff too @MotherofPearl I like your tablecloth as well and hope you manage to get it white

Lovely gifting bits @BeaLola I saw them in the sale and was tempted, but went for a 50ml bottle of perfume instead.

That is beautiful MotherofPearl!

latedecember1963 · 15/07/2020 18:06

Ooh, peach scented perfume, I'll have to investigate that!
The tablecloths are beautiful. I especially like the hyathinths and the lace detail on the white cloth is immaculate. I embroidered a tablecloth for CSE Needlework. I'll see if I can dig it out when I get chance.

Ooh, peach scented perfume, I'll have to investigate that!
I walked into the kitchen the other evening and there was an amazing smell that I couldn't figure out at first. It turned out to be flat peaches (they tasted really good too). The Fragrance Library do a peach perfume.

Peaches perfume smell - I think a Shay Blue freebie in the M&S advent calendar one year was a. white peaches?

I'm admiring the cloths . From my Great aunt I have some cloths that she made – I think my dad said they were made by"tatting" is that the right expression apologies if not ?

Greenpop21 · 16/07/2020 07:15

Thanks to this thread I’ve ordered a 4711 selection of 8ml colognes for £10. Looking forward to trying. Always liked the classic and just noted that it contains the magic bergamot which I’ve noted is in most fragrances I like.

Greenpop21 · 16/07/2020 07:16

Might order the white peach and coriander which sounds heavenly .

dontcallmelen · 16/07/2020 10:59

I’m wondering if I have made this up, but have vague memories of Avon doing a peach scented range? Off to look at the 4711 colognes.

dontcallmelen · 16/07/2020 11:04

I’m really rubbish at craft stuff can knit or sew, I bought this little sewing table years ago for a tenner I think & now use it for CD storage, I’m quite good at repurchasing old furniture though.

@MotherofPearl this stuff was what used to be used for whitening along with leaving things out in the sunshine.

JaneJeffer · 16/07/2020 11:56

Picture would be handy...

@Greenpop21 ... where did you get your mini bottles of 4711 variants please?

thisenglishlife · 16/07/2020 15:01

Oh yes, bluing. My grandmother still does that (but uses a different brand).

@Gatekeeper it might be this (delivers from Germany though): www.parfumdreams.co.uk/4711/Womens-fragrances/Floral-Collection/index_91409.aspx

I still use starch- the proper powdered sort-none of your fancy spray on rubbish. It makes a big difference to t-shirts and shirts that have gone a bit limp as it adds 'body'
I have several pairs of utility sheets from WWII- Dorma and Horrockes- and the quality is wonderful even 60 years on . I sleep on them and a pair of 1950's merino blankets and a home made patchwork quilt
