How to not look middle aged

I've seen a few pictures of my recently and I look frumpy. I don't mind looking my age (mid 40s) but I just look uurgh.

I've started curly girl and I think curly hair ages me loads! Where do I need to buy from to make myself a bit more with it? I've a tendency to buy cheap supermarket stuff which I think isn't always cut the best and I'm willing to spend a bit more.

I'm 5 ft 7 and 9 stone 9 if that makes a difference but a definite apple and have a bit of a belly which I think adds to the frumpiness

Thanks!

Here is my link if anyone wants £15 off their StitchFix box.

www.stitchfix.co.uk/invite/ffztmxfkwh?sod=w&som=c

You pay £10 stylist fee which is deducted if you keep at least one item. Then £15 off that item, plus 20% off everything if you keep all five items. You set your price limits when you sign up and get to give loads of info about what you want/don't want.

So for example I was able to say No Shoes as I have very wide feet. Or you can say no stripes/checks/green/whatever.

Good luck! Delivery cheered me right up!!

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 15:53

Eek, I knew it would be expensive, hers is short and black but such a fit and cut!

TazSyd · 29/06/2020 16:55

@Railingsohno

Love the jacket. Just deciding if I prefer navy or beige.

I’m biased but the green is lovely! I wear it with a Uniqlo gilet under when it’s colder.

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 17:44

Here are the two I'm unsure of Railingsohno I know they look v plain but there's a lovely v and bow at back. Too wide?

Jaysus the hair looks desperate, please no comments!!

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 17:51

I now think last one OK tho floater than usual for me, shoulders are right.

Alsohuman · 29/06/2020 17:56

I think they all look good but don’t listen to me because I detest tight clothes! Your hair looks fine to me too - you should see mine!

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 18:27

Thanks a mill. See I've small so I can look swamped if too much material!

JaneJeffer · 29/06/2020 18:53

The shirt looks too big IMO and I don't think the shade of white suits you as good as the white tops do.

TheHoundsofLove · 29/06/2020 18:56

They‘re all lovely tops Hey - I don‘t like tight clothing either, but am fussy about shoulders fitting and think the first 3 would probably look even better in a smaller size. They’re beautiful tops though and I love the sound of the v / bow back. Smile

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 18:57

OK thank you, they're all labelled 'ecru'..

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 18:59

Thanks the hounds, now you can see me Grin Yes I think will send back especially when the other shirt, not pictured is XS and not too tight at all.

Railingsohno · 29/06/2020 20:46

Nice! I’m not so keen on the shirt - I don’t think that shade is good on you. I have to be careful with white myself. Who knew there were so many shades of white! I like the three tops. Not sure on sizing. Can you return and then but back in the Xs and S so you can compare? Or just order the Xs before returning the S? It would be good to compare.

Heygirlheyboy · 29/06/2020 21:59

The shirt looked more causal/almost linen on the site.. But I do love a white shirt. Devi now if it's not my colour!! I am going to order all in the XS as I have 15 days to return and these arrived in 4. That way can compare like with like. Thanks for the comments, appreciate it.

Railingsohno · 30/06/2020 00:05

@Heygirlheyboy it’s fun to vicariously shop through others! I have a really gorgeous white linen shirt from M&S of all places. It’s so nice with the sleeves rolled up, unbuttoned quite low. I’ve actually been stopped in the street and complimented wearing it (pretty much the first and only time!) it’s a really bright white linen. Maybe have a look in a few other places. Try different shades of white - some look better than others. Anything remotely beige and I look awful but a creamy white looks much better and a very bright white linen. I’m now looking at some of the Sezane stuff. Annoying website though. Too many posey photos of the model and not enough of the actual item!

Railingsohno · 30/06/2020 00:06

Ps good luck with the other sizes!

Heygirlheyboy · 30/06/2020 00:27

The XS now not available for two of them! :/
Yes agree re the site! I am surprised with the anti-white comments when you can't see my face Grin

Railingsohno · 30/06/2020 00:46

Sorry don’t mean to be anti white. Just projecting my own white issues and my internal ramblings 🙈

Justtakeatowel · 30/06/2020 07:05

Feel I need to post in case this thread fills up!

I never thought when I posted originally that there would be so much response and that so many of us feel the same way!

I've not had much opportunity to get new stuff yet but I have started online looking to try and get a few new pieces that are me rather than my usual lazy supermarket clothes shopping!

@Heygirlheyboy I agree with others and think you should go tighter! I often buy too big but think things are actually better when they are a bit more snug!

Just wanted to say thank you too. Like OP I had got stuck in a mixture of supermarket impulse buys and frumpy ditsy stuff.

I was in tkmaxx yesterday shopping with teen. I felt more confident. I thought of the Times article mentioned by Mawbags and Alsohuman summarised above. Be open minded. Try something.

Bought just two things and both look nice. Avoided cute. Bought a batwing top that looks great with jeans and an oversized sweatshirt which I would have avoided but it’s nice! It’s the sort of thing I would have worn when I was younger. Looking forward to being warm in the house.

Bought some high rise straight jeans from M&S and they look good too!

Previously I had concentrated on work clothes and just worn whatever for casual, giving it almost no thought and feeling bleugh. I feel more comfortable now in clothes that fit and haven’tgiven up in the wash!

Heygirlheyboy · 30/06/2020 08:48

So true re. letting casual clothes go!

Thank you op and for opinion on my order Smile

Laquila · 30/06/2020 10:13

Crikey I was looking forward to a little flick through this thread to add my tips of they haven't been covered already it there's 38 PAGES!!

Therefore apols if my points have already been covered but these are my general rules for looking out-together:

  • Invest in good coats (with hoods) as realistically they're probably one of the items you're going to wear most and what most people will see you in, and not having to carry an umbrella always seems to make people look better 😁
  • High-waisted jeans = life-changing.
  • No-show socks/footsies (if you wear trainers) - the only ones I've found that don't slip down are some magic nude ones from M&S with a silicone bit on the heel that helps them stay up.
  • Avoid places like Fat Face and White Stuff...I KNOW, they work for some people but I do not look good, as a rule, in Fat Face.
  • Avoid whimsical foxes/deer/birds/butterflies on clothes, like the goddamn plague.
  • Nowt wrong with a bit of subtle animal print though!
  • Basically, if it doesn't look credibly expensive then don't buy it. (For me this doesn't necessarily rule out supermarket clothes but you do have to be picky.)
  • When you find something you really like, which washes well, BUY TWO.
