New dress for school sports day

HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 22:43

Help please! I’d like to buy a new dress which is smart casual and suitable for a school sports day (I’m not competing Grin). A school mum has a lovely white floaty dress with a lace trim which is lovely, but she has an ace figure and I don’t.

I have big norks and no waist - classic apple shape. Mint Velvet have a few dresses in their sale but they are dark wintry colours and a lot have handkerchief hems which I don’t like

Any ideas? Please!!

A new dress to watch sports day? Hmm

Something like this? Sounds like my figure is similar to yours and I've had many compliments wearing it.

Ooh I love trying to help find dresses!

A few questions:

  • How tall are you (roughly)?
  • Are there any colours you love?
-Would you want sleeves do you think? (Only asking as I have kind of chunky upper arms so tend to like some sort of sleeve even if just a short one).
HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 22:50

Yes @blueberrymojito. Why is that a problem for you?

Thank you @radgybadger. That’s the kind of thing. I’d forgotten about M&S, they sometimes have gems.

This is lovely - www.bravissimo.com/products/iris-dress-charcoalcoral-pd566ccl/

(I am assuming it’s one of those parents’ day/nice social type of sports day, in which case you’ll want to feel nice so totally get why you’d want a new dress)

HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 22:53

marina - I am 5’5 and 14/16 with the 16 being up top. I love navy but I’m looking for something summery. If the dress has no sleeves then I’d cover them with a cardi or something.

I haven’t bought new clothes for ages and I would like to smarten up a little when I know the entire school is going to be out.

Ooh, that’s lovely. And I can wear that with white plimsolls so that I don’t sink into the grass Grin. Yes, you’ve correctly read the situation. The field sports are actually the side show 🥺

Oh God our sports day is like that as well, I find the whole thing quite stressful! I think I’m going to rebel this year and turn up in jeans.

MarinaMarinara · 15/06/2019 23:01

Haha - I’ve been to a few of those! They’re really nice but not always what you might imagine when someone first says “sports day”... it’ll all be good though.

I’m also a 14/16 (rather bigger on top) and tend to fit a “14 really curvy” in Bravissimo clothes. The quality is usually good too, I don’t have the one I linked to but the last two I got from there have been a good fabric weight, fitted nicely and washed well.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 15/06/2019 23:01

Is it a private school? Only asking because I can't imagine anyone going to a typical state school sports day would consider it an event to dress up for.

Passtherioja · 15/06/2019 23:05

@missyB1 ...I think I've only ever turned up in jeans!

I've been attending DDs primary sports days for 9 years altogether and always pop home to get changed before heading back to work...I feel like I've been missing some memo these past few years!!

IsThisIt82 · 15/06/2019 23:06
Hmm
HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 23:08

i once bought a top from Pepperberry and I wear it all the time in winter (it’s navy). I never wear dresses but a lot of the other mothers do.

Elizabeth Hurley wears nice summer dresses on her instagram pages but I’d never fit into those.

A new dress for sports day? How bloody ridiculous!!

Just wear some jeans and a top. All you do is spend the afternoon sat on a muddy filed.

Save the money and effort for something worth a new outfit.

TapasForTwo · 15/06/2019 23:13

"Is it a private school? Only asking because I can't imagine anyone going to a typical state school sports day would consider it an event to dress up for."

I was wondering too. At DD's state primary school I don't think any of the parents really took any notice of what anyone else was wearing.

If this weather continues there will either be no sports day or the OP will just want to be in jeans, wellies and a raincoat.
However, that Bravissimo dress is utterly beautiful. Pity I don't have the curves for it Sad

HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 23:13

Hi. This isn’t AIBU.

I am not being unreasonable to want to buy a new dress.

I am not being unreasonable to ask for style advice.

I am not being unreasonable by having no interest in your judgey pants.

HeorgeEzrapants I think its because for the vast majority, the school sports day is a total non event style wise. Most state sports days are a half day at most, consisting entirely of events, an award ceremony at the end and a speech by the head. All focussed on the children, with the parents expected to simply turn up and cheer them on. It's not about the parents, and at my ones, most were squeezing it in around work, childcare and whatever they usually do that afternoon. A quick chat with familiar faces might be the only social interaction involved.

Nothing wrong with your request if yours is different of course and I picture the sort of day it would be, its just not the norm when you say school sports day that's all.

avalanching · 16/06/2019 09:08

Do your kids go to school with George and Charlotte? I'm confused, never seen sports day and Liz Hurley mentioned in the same thread.

blushmelikeyou · 16/06/2019 09:09

Most of the parents at my children's school myself included come straight from work to watch sports day so I'm just in my work gear. Never known sports day to be a dressed up affair.

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 16/06/2019 09:13

If you want a new dress, get a lovely new dress and feel amazing!!

Ignore the judgey panted ladies on here.

Perfectly reasonable question to ask a community of women who should help and support each other!!

So hard not to swear and call judgey people twats!!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/06/2019 09:16

No one is saying don't buy a new dress! But a dress specifically planned to wear to dc sports day is bonkers!

MarinaMarinara · 16/06/2019 09:19

I thought I was a completely reasonable question and it was absolutely clear to me what sort of sports day you meant - surely it isn’t that alien a concept?!

I hope you find the perfect dress and have a lovely time.

MrsMozartMkII · 16/06/2019 09:23

Have a new dress for whatever reason you want lass. No one should ever have to justify why they bought a new dress ffs, unless of course buying one would mean no food on the table, etc. etc. etc.

I hope you find a lovely one and enjoy wearing it.

TheAngryLlama · 16/06/2019 09:23

My kids school does have the kind of sports day one is I think supposed to choose s dress for but I don’t bother. In fact mostly I don’t go. Less bother all round

HeorgeEzrapants · 16/06/2019 09:59

I only mentioned sports day because it involves standing up and sitting down on the grass, thus affecting the type of dress I should wear. Whilst I would love to look like the girl in this photo, a bodycon dress on my figure, plus sitting cross legged on a blanket would have me escorted from the school.

Thank you to those of you who have supported me and given suggestions.
