New dress for school sports day

HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 22:43

Help please! I’d like to buy a new dress which is smart casual and suitable for a school sports day (I’m not competing Grin). A school mum has a lovely white floaty dress with a lace trim which is lovely, but she has an ace figure and I don’t.

I have big norks and no waist - classic apple shape. Mint Velvet have a few dresses in their sale but they are dark wintry colours and a lot have handkerchief hems which I don’t like

Any ideas? Please!!

I hate it when the sneery joys suckers invade S&B, bog off back to to AIBU.....
Anyway, I agree with a pp, what about a jumpsuit? A wide legged one would be really flattering and you could wear wedges with it so your feet don't sink on the grass.
Stick a denim jacket on with it and take a scarf in case it's bloody Baltic like it is today, to double up as a shawl. (If the weather doesn't improve, get some footless fleece lined tights from primark to wear underneath either a maxi or a jumpsuit.

And a raincoat and umbrella. The weather where I live right now is like October, and has been for what feels like several weeks.

finnmcool · 17/06/2019 15:30

A bit late to the party, La Redoute have some lovely dresses that suit us apples and they've got a sale on!
I hope you all have a lovely sports day and as pp have said, ignore the saddos who feel the need to sneer at anyone who doesn't do exactly what they do.

Just a couple of examples.

thenightsky · 17/06/2019 15:48

I've just bought this

Notthecarwashagain · 17/06/2019 15:56

I'm lacking in style and confidence lately, and literally every 'event' has me obsessively looking for the right outfit.
I had to buy myself a new denim shirt just for an autism meeting for Ds recently even though I have lots

I completely understand the need for a lovely new dress on a day when you know you'll see everyone!

Hope you find one!

SkintAsASkintThing · 17/06/2019 16:17

Aww op. Therel seems to be an under current of thick brained nastiness on MN lately.

I hope you find your lovely dress and have an amazing day. I know exactly the sort of day you mean........a few of the schools near me do similar and it's a big event that includes lunch for the parents.

Notthecarwashagain · 17/06/2019 16:17

This is lovely, if you don't mind a loud pattern.
(You can obviously ignore this suggestion, as I did just say that I am not stylish! Grin )

Bluerussian · 17/06/2019 17:35

That is a really lovely dress, Notthecarwashagain. I love it!

HeorgeEzraPants · 17/06/2019 22:43

Gosh, such lovely dresses!! My credit card is going to go into meltdown! What is the quality like with LaRedoute? I bought some baby clothes from there about 10 years ago and haven’t used it since.

The Next dress is lovely but a little loud for me - perfect for a summer holiday though!

Thanks for the new suggestions.

Cannot believe this thread.

Women are allowed to care about clothes. They certainly don’t have to, but it is NOT the moral high ground to bif about in sackcloth and ashes and snipe at other people’s choices to bring them down.

OP, I couldn’t be bothered about dressing up for sports day this year, but I tell you what I’ll still raise you one better. I have just been lying in bed considering what to wear to both PRIZE DAY and the MUM’S NIGHT OUT. I feel like now I might just go and buy a new dress just to support you.

Yes that’s right, A NEW DRESS FOR THE POINTLESS PRIZE DAY WHERE MY CHILD ISN’T EVEN GETTING A PRIZE, now come at me you killjoys (the rest of you vipers can stay). Grin

This is the lovely Style and Beauty topic where we give s&b advice and suggestions (or at least it was). Its a shame the OP felt she had to justify herself by posting her reasons. Someone might want a new dress for walking to the bottom of the garden and back... whatever, more power to them I say! This isn't AIBU. OP I'm sorry to hear about your MIL and hope you have a lovely Sports Day. I think you should buy ten new dresses!

SisterMaryLoquacious · 18/06/2019 08:39

Whilst I feel that “I want a new summer midi dress and I don’t have one” is absolutely the right reason to buy a dress: with the summer we’re having you might want to wait until the last moment to work out whether the weather is going to be Dubai or Shetlands. I guess the safest option is to get something light and sleeveless to which you can add a cardigan or denim jacket for meteorological flexibility.

I always wore nice cotton dresses to my DCs’ bog standard primary sports day. Not because everyone else was dressed up - simply because it was too hot for jeans and don’t suit shorts. And “nice” because I don’t go out of my way to buy nasty clothes. The best ones came from charity shops actually, as did my nicest A-line patterned summer skirts so if you’re on a budget and you have good chazzas nearby then they're definitely worth a quick look because it takes the edge off the “sitting on damp grass in brand new frock” worry.

Love your post @Blitheringheights

Theimpossiblegirl · 18/06/2019 10:59

I have a new dress for the airshow this weekend. It will get covered in sticky fingerprints and I'll probably be sat on the ground for a picnic.
I'm with you OP.

mocha78 · 18/06/2019 12:07

I don’t post often but just logged in to give you support OP and echo what everyone else has said. I think about what to wear for school events too, not often I socialise any more so school events are my opportunity sometimes to put thought into an outfit. Anyway, this may be a bit too casual but I got this dress from Warehouse for the summer and it’s very comfy and makes me feel good

I saw a fab dress at prize giving last week it was a tube skirt with a long sleeve top in a light stretch material in navy and white. The lady wearing it was 5ft 7 with boobs and it looked so fab and easy to wear like understated but totally glam !

Desmondo2016 · 18/06/2019 12:32

I think your sports day sounds a whole lot more fun than ours lol! Memories of being rained on while trying to pretend I care about the keystage one beanbag throw event and watching other parents trying to pretend they don't really think that because their super athlete won the 50 metre dash he is therefore destined for Olympic glory. Oh and how could I forget the 'parents race is just a laugh yeah to fuck it is I'm gonna beat the other parents if it's the last thing I do' mentality!!!

HeorgeEzraPants · 18/06/2019 13:45

OK, so I’m sitting in the John Lewis cafe and I’ve got it! I think a PP actually linked to this dress as well! I have also bought an off white cardi from Oasis and I already have some blue pumps to complete the look. Couldn’t find a small cross body handbag today so I’ll have another look later.

Thank you everyone 😘. And 🖕 to the H8ers.

Oh I like that! Very pretty. Hope you don’t get dragged into the three legged race!

MyFavouritePlace · 18/06/2019 19:53

Oh that's lovely. Have a great day.

Our sports day is a very much a dress up day especially if the weather is good.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/06/2019 19:53

I hope it’s not this week - the weather is horrible?

zippyswife · 18/06/2019 20:01

That’s great. Bet you look lovely. Have a great time.
