New dress for school sports day

HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 22:43

Help please! I’d like to buy a new dress which is smart casual and suitable for a school sports day (I’m not competing Grin). A school mum has a lovely white floaty dress with a lace trim which is lovely, but she has an ace figure and I don’t.

I have big norks and no waist - classic apple shape. Mint Velvet have a few dresses in their sale but they are dark wintry colours and a lot have handkerchief hems which I don’t like

Any ideas? Please!!

Christ on a bike. Some schools make more of an event out of sports day than others. Get over it.

Ours is similar OP, with drinks, BBQ and cakes served etc. so I get you. But my main concern this year is wearing something both smart, summery and waterproof!! I’m really not sure what to go for.

Theimpossiblegirl · 16/06/2019 11:52

This is style and beauty, people, not Aibu.
I suggest you familiarise yourself with the different boards before posting. We are nice and supportive here and don't pile in on people using any excuse to have a dig.

Next have some good dresses that seem to lend themselves to getting up and down easily.

Viviene · 16/06/2019 11:53

Massimo Dutti? They have lots of nice dresses. Take the largest size available (which is what I do and I am your size). The sale is on at the moment.

sleepwhenidie · 16/06/2019 11:55

The dresses and skirts here are fantastic, look great on everyone (search on Instagram) and would be perfect with white plimsolls kemitelford.com/collections/bottoms

youarenotkiddingme · 16/06/2019 11:55

Not all sports days are hopping in and out of a hoop and everyone getting a certificate of presence.

Some actually involve sports, and races and competition. Families there all day and BBQ and picnics and socialising.

I have your type of figure (but taller 5"7) and I like tea dress style dresses for this sort of event as they are light and cool on hot days and can be teamed with jacket (and even knee high boots) if it's chilly.

HeorgeEzrapants · 16/06/2019 12:07

Some lovely ideas, thank you. I particularly love the Debenhams dress which looks perfect.

White company have lovely summer dresses that would look nice with a denim jacket over so as not to look too twee. Flat shoes or white plimsolls too? Have a lovely day OP.

BeaLola · 16/06/2019 16:11

Op sorry that you have had some off replies

I would buy a dress for any event and am already working out what to wear to sports day - why not ?

I am older and larger than you but like the Amelie dess from Boden and they do another whose name escapes me but Iis sleeveless and cones in navy ,red and a palm print on navy - with a linen shirt or denim jacket will look casual but good .

Hope you get something fab Smile

GreenTulips · 16/06/2019 16:15

Debenhams have sale on with lots of summer dresses

BogglesGoggles · 16/06/2019 16:17

The parents at our school do this which I strange because I see them every day in their jeans and athleisure so it’s not like they’re fooling anyone into thinking they are always glamourous. They are all also going to a black tie event on the school lawn next week. They are really really lovely people but have some strange sartorial habits.

Lol!

I might contact the headteacher of my kids school and tell them that their sports day isn't Mumsnetty enough!

Betty777 · 16/06/2019 17:21

OP I had sports day this week and i DID wear a nice dress. Mainly as I heard there was a parents race, and wanted to ensure I didnt' have to compete.......

Betty777 · 16/06/2019 17:21

oh and there a few that might work in teh current Warehouse sale :-)

Bluntness100 · 16/06/2019 17:29

Op, I'm guessing you've been to sports days at your kids school before and they are dressy events?

I'm also curious as my daughter went to a rather "posh" private school and sports day saw all the parents casually dressed, jeans, t shirts, chinos, that kind of thing. I've never heard of a dressy sports day

HeorgeEzrapants · 16/06/2019 18:38

A message to those of you who are sneering at me: “Thanks for pissing on this. Congratulations and well done. MIL has terminal cancer and won’t be here by Christmas. We wanted to make this a nice afternoon as it will be the last sports day she ever gets to see. All I wanted was some ideas about a dress as this is a bucket list event for MIL. Don’t even think about accusing me of drip feeding. It’s Style & Beauty and I asked for advice about a dress. I’m not planning to go dressed in taffeta and a tiara. I haven’t bought a summer dress for quite a while and all I wanted was thoughts about a dress. To be outside in. For an afternoon. Where I stand up and sit down. That I will be comfortable in. You have judged me and been unpleasant. I didn’t want to say anything in the OP as my thread should purely have been about A DRESS.”

Thanks to everyone else. There are some lovely ideas and you’ve given me some inspiration about where to start looking.

You can carry on commenting about my hissy fit if you want and say oh I didn’t know. But the back story should have nothing to do with wanting to know where to buy a dress.

I really hope you find the right dress and have a lovely time lass.

I'm surprised and saddened by posters who've been so harsh. This is S&B, not AIBU, but it's felt more like the latter on this thread.

201805spring · 16/06/2019 18:47

Just ignore the nasty posters on here, they have nothing helpful to say. Sounds like it will be a lovely day. Some good dress ideas on here for you too. Honestly, some people have to sneer at everyone, sad.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/06/2019 18:49

I'd wear trousers. Most sports days for me have been sitting on the grass, being dragged onto a race or climbing over fences (don't ask). All but one have been hideously hot (risk of sunburn plus all sweaty) and the 'one' was pissing down!

I find dresses a bit uncomfortable as they never 'match' size top and bottom for me for some reason. And I get hot and sweaty!

I like wide legged 3/4 trousers with some nice flats or something like converse trainers - I knwo they can look very elegant with heels too. I always wear a t-shirt in DSs team colour! I have even seen parennt do a bit of creative DIY sewing to cover 2 or even 3 teams!

Ellapaella · 16/06/2019 18:52

Have you had a look at Boden @HeorgeEzrapants ? I have a friend who is quite busty and she has several dresses from Boden that she looks amazing in. I think they suit the bustier figure. Also check out Sosander.

twosoups1972 · 16/06/2019 19:11

What a bitchy thread.

The OP didn’t ask for approval, she wavtee some suggestions. I’m sure she’ll wear said dress again, not just for Sports day.

How on earth can snide comments about sports days at other schools possibly help the OP? What’s the point of posting, to make her feel bad?

OP I hope you find something nice.

twosoups1972 · 16/06/2019 19:14

OP, just read your update, I’m so sorry about your MIL. Hope you find a fab dress and ignore the nasty comments.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/06/2019 19:15

Ignore the bitchiness. Says more about them than anything else.

Some people can't read that its asking 'what' not 'if'.

Looneytune253 · 16/06/2019 19:23

I've just ordered this from next

New dress for school sports day
Theimpossiblegirl · 16/06/2019 19:36

I'm so sorry about the meanness, op. Even without your update they are out of order and should piss off. I hate the way don't posters just like to put down, sheer and belittle.

I'm so sorry about your MIL. I hope you have a lovely sport's day.

I've just discovered Popsy dresses, they fit well, are British made, affordable and have pockets!
