New dress for school sports day

HeorgeEzrapants · 15/06/2019 22:43

Help please! I’d like to buy a new dress which is smart casual and suitable for a school sports day (I’m not competing Grin). A school mum has a lovely white floaty dress with a lace trim which is lovely, but she has an ace figure and I don’t.

I have big norks and no waist - classic apple shape. Mint Velvet have a few dresses in their sale but they are dark wintry colours and a lot have handkerchief hems which I don’t like

Any ideas? Please!!

Berryworld do some lovely dresses, not expensive either. I love their skater dresses.

whitehalleve · 16/06/2019 20:45

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD do you have the first Amazon dress?

I love it but am wary of what it would be like in real life.

@HeorgeEzrapants I hope you find a dress you love

shitpark · 16/06/2019 20:51

At my dc primary school, the thing to do is to wear anything too impractical to run in, so as not to be asked to run in the parents race which is full of dads trying tp out do each other.
I always wear a dress, last year I wore wedge espadrilles

TapasForTwo · 16/06/2019 21:15

When DD was at primary school I think we only had two summers when it was too hot. I remember one wet sports day where all the parents were huddled under the trees.

octopusrus · 16/06/2019 21:28

Wow can't believe the nasty comments on here - well done ladies I hope you're proud Confused and all feel much better now. Jesus.

OP our sports day is a bit of an event too and I've already been wondering what to wear as last year was bloody boiling and I was in jeans! Everyone else had floaty dresses on and I literally couldn't stand in the sun as it was about 30c!!

So this year I need a dress too, but one which I can sit down in as we'll be sitting on mats/blankets half the time so can't have anything short.

Have bought this last week from M&S which might be good? Am going to wear with either a navy or white vest and blue cheapy flip flops so it's not too dressy. It's v thin and non crease and will cover everything when sitting down!

Oh gosh OP just read your update. I'm so sorry about your MIL. You sound like a lovely person. I'm embarrassed to be part of MN when you've asked for advice on S&B about a dress and have received these comments. I'm so sorry Sad

Whatever you wear, the Roald Dahl analogy is true and your personality and loveliness will shine through Smile

HeorgeEzraPants · 16/06/2019 22:17

Thanks lovely MNetters 💕. Sorry, I got a bit emotional and angry earlier on.

There are some great ideas and I’ll certainly check out Biden, Bravissit, M&S, Debenhams and Next, and also have a look online. I’ve been a bit wary of internet only clothes shops but I’ll have a look. Funnily enough, I was in London during half term and passed Massimo Dutti. I immediately thought of Mumsnet but it’s out of my price bracket I’m afraid Grin

Well, thanks for your nice comments and for making me feel a bit better this evening. 😘

Sorry about MIL. My mum also has cancer (incurable but treatable to try and kerb it)

You didn't have to explain. You wanted a dress idea. That's all people should have provided.

IndistinctRadioChatter · 17/06/2019 05:16

OP: People dress up for sports day at my kids’ school.

LOTS OF POSTERS: Well I’ve never experienced that and therefore it can’t be true

Especially love the poster who wanted to make sure OP know what to wear at a posh school bc HER posh school isn’t like this.

What’s the big deal if OP’s kids go to a posh school anyway? My kids do and I’m not ashamed of it. (We live in west London and we’re not close enough to any good state schools.) And yes, sports day is a bit of an event. Why?

1). Because it’s fun, and
2) Because we are raising money for our school charity, which researches treatment for a truly awful childhood disease that claimed one of our students last year.

GlamGiraffe · 17/06/2019 07:55

Good on you OP for telling all these MN nasties where to get off. And for what it's worth the dress I did my twirly dance across the sports day field in in lieu of being a competitive athlete actually was a silk tafetta mid calf dress with tulle underskirt. As you say it's no one else's business what you wear and why ( you shouldnt have felt the need to explain yourself. Still take a brolly and a wrap though!!) Enjoy it and hope MIL has a lovely day.

shinynewapple · 17/06/2019 08:22

@Theimpossiblegirl love that popsy clothing - brilliant it is UK made

Birdy65 · 17/06/2019 08:48

This is nice, you can dress it up/down depending on footwear and accessories.

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 17/06/2019 08:52

Love the FatFace one! And the Boden one. The Popsy ones are lovely but of OP has big boobs and waist like me then a belt would be tricky.

curiositycreature · 17/06/2019 09:03

Tried looking on Liz Hurleys Instagram to see what you were after but she appears to me predominantly in bikinis 😂

What about this? Navy and summery...

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 17/06/2019 09:53

OP says big Norks and no waist, apple shape!

I have big Norks and no waist, apple shape. Definitely no high neck lines and no belts

curiositycreature · 17/06/2019 10:04

Do you find an empire line works for you DogsandBoysmeanMud? Sometimes my big boobs mean something ends up empire line which might sit lower on someone else... and I always thought empire line was good for apple shapes?

TapasForTwo · 17/06/2019 10:08

I really like the White Stuff dress. I have a similar one from Next that I bought about 3 years ago. I still think the Bravissimo dress is utterly beautiful.

Nesssie · 17/06/2019 10:16

Its like a competition on here, who is the 'coolest/relaxed' Mum.
'I just wore shorts and a t-shirt' 'I wore a bin bag' ' I didn't even go to mine'
This is S&B not AIBU ffs

OP, personally I love the olive green dress from the first page, just the right balance of casual/dressy and can wear flat sneakers/trainers.

Quellium · 17/06/2019 10:17

Bless you OP, people have been really mean.

If I may say that all of the sports days I have been to have been absolutely bloody freezing the last few years, that maybe you'd want to team it with a fabulous coat too?

What about palava.co/collections/womens-dresses?

feelinhopeful · 17/06/2019 11:18

What about a jumpsuit? No chance of flashing when you stand up and sit down. Dorothy Perkins have some great ones in at the moment. Mine even has pockets, which I love!

DogsandBoysmeanMud · 17/06/2019 11:25

Personally empire line is great for big Norks and no waist. But I also love jumpsuits. I'm a 14/16. 5ft 7in

Bluerussian · 17/06/2019 12:26

Sorry, I meant to say BERRYLOOK in earlier post. They do some beautiful things at affordable prices.

I still think it is very strange having something special to wear for a school sports day but if that is what is done at your child's school, so be it. Different strokes and all that.

OhJustElfOff · 17/06/2019 12:38

how about some nice white linen trousers (slim leg)

www.johnlewis.com/pure-collection-linen-slim-leg-cropped-trousers/p3593223

with a floaty top and nice jewellery?
