Lovers of Parisian style and fashion with a conscious mindset to our wardrobes. Occasionally we pretend this is a proper Salon of the non-beauty kind.

Also, sorry, didn't mean to glance over it, annoying about Sezane, Elle, your refund experience has put me off ordering online with them (always shopped in store), but I'll keep a look out for non essential labels in opposing colours now. Is it worth emailing them about? French CS is usually non existent IME but they do seem more professional and international oriented than most.

Speaking of skincare I have been using a free sample pot of Omorovicza Rejuvenating Night Cream and really liking it. Don't think I can justify the price tag to buy it though.

Thanks Elle for the perfume comments. Might be my project for next year...

I see Arket have started their pre-sale for subscribers.

Floisme · 19/12/2018 09:56

Oh I’ve only ever seen it attributed to Chanel - I think it’s more a sign of how attitudes have changed!

quirkychick · 19/12/2018 11:33

I've only seen it attributed to Chanel, too. But as bo points out, she was often wearing tons of pearls (by today's standards) but then a much more simplistic style than earlier Edwardian fashion.

The article in last weekend's Telegraph magazine about Clare Waight Keller (amusingly just before an article about the sparkly Strictly costumes), she's working the black, leather shine in this photo, too. A quote about her moving to Paris in 2012 and getting her head around Parisian style "Parisians are very specific. They never look as though they're wearing too much make-up. They don't wear nail polish, or if they do it's red. It's all about looking effortless, chic and elegant. If it's cool, it has to be the right kind of cool."

Elle that sounds extremely annoying about Sezane.

The Crepeys' threads came to a standstill about 18 months ago: I think they got hacked. Just guessing that Vogue is probably the longest-running S&B thread of all.

CatherineMaitland · 19/12/2018 12:44

What was the Crepeys thread?

XingMing · 19/12/2018 16:03

They were Mnetters of a certain age who hit it off and stayed chatting. They were full of sensible kindly advice with a sharp wit. The titles were amusing... Crepe Expectations would be typical. It ran and ran, and lots of people dipped in and out, but there was a solid core of regular contributors, some of whom are still about.

CatherineMaitland · 19/12/2018 17:09

Sounds like fun and a real shame that they ended.

The New Winter White

We can’t not acknowledge a bit of impractical winter white in winter, but much like black white is taking a back seat and we’ve moved the shade a shift. Off-white, ecru, or whatever you want to call it, let’s just all admit we’re talking a shade quite close to beige that you can embrace in either cool or warm tones. Beige, much like white, can be tricky to wear, especially in winter light, so undertones matter. Much like white, January light and beyond seems to work with these colours better.

In contrast to white, it can afford to lean into neighbouring shades without competing for attention and still deliver that monochromatic look with an assuring softness.

White itself can work quite well to give it a graphic edge, and if worn with restraint, white remains a supporting actor without fear of draining your complexion.

OP posts:
botemp · 19/12/2018 17:59

It also makes a great base for incorporating autumnal colours without making them feel out of season in the midst of winter. Equally, it makes for an excellent transition shade into spring, playing off pastels with ease. For as versatile as these whiter shades of beige are, it could benefit from a bit more appreciation and some space in the limelight in the New Year.

Oh I love white!
Today has been a challenging day a bit stressful but nearly over and lovely to see great photos and write up about them so thank you as usual Bo.

JaneR0chester · 19/12/2018 21:15

I've name changed loads, but have followed (and occasionally contributed) to these threads since the beginning. Just wanted to say thank you bo Flowers for another fab advent calendar - always great to see your selection of photos and wise words of style-wisdom.

We are skiing over the Christmas break, so no hope of stylishness for me - I totally choose thermals and warmth, regardless of whether it looks good or not! However, I must try a penis belt next year...

quirkychick · 20/12/2018 08:43

I love white, too, I find it more workable as an under layer in winter. Also, bo's suggestion on a previous thread of the wet cement off white colour, which I find much more flattering than beige.

Hope tomorrow is better for you, Red. Enjoy your skiing, Jane.

Floisme · 20/12/2018 08:46

More great pics - I might make finding a way to wear white one of my resolutions for 2019.

In homage to this thread I’m wearing a silver sparkly top just peeping out from under a grey V neck today. I love tips like that.

I heard the Crepeys decamped to a closed Facebook group. I wasn’t a poster but I used to look out for them. I’ve seen some posters still around on S&B plus I imagine some of them name changed.

CatherineMaitland · 20/12/2018 10:07

Thanks for the pictures again bo

See the Cos sale has started, some nice jumpers and things marked down. Have to keep reminding myself I don't need more jumpers now; at least, I don't need more black, grey, or navy ones.

quirkychick · 20/12/2018 14:57

I saw someone working the grey and camel look today, while out shopping. She looked great, it's certainly an "expensive" look. Grey jeans with a beige/pale camel, plaited belt, what looked like grey, cashmere layers and scarf, sleeveless light camel coat, rose gold metallic trainers. She really stood out as warm and chic. I generally do not suit warm-toned beige, but mixing with greys might be a way to wear cooler camel colours.

flo proper white does really suits me, but it's just not practical! I think mixing it in with a softer white and other neutrals might be my way in

Blue Skies

Tomorrow, the twenty-first, marks the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. It’s usually a dreary grey filled one that can leave us yearning for some blue skies at the expense of some air miles. Now, this isn’t always easily feasible, and rarely does our fantasy match the reality, but it doesn’t stop us pulling it out of one’s wardrobe.

Yes, we’re talking blue again Halo, a special shade of blue that’s coincidentally quite fashionable at the moment. It’s always been a staple in Phoebe Philo’s Céline’s collections and even dictated the choice of marble in the Miami flagship store as if they have a shortage of blue sky filled days. It can now be spotted in Bottega Veneta’s upcoming collection.

It pairs well with other current fashionable bright, orange, and can liven up a staid tweed. Equally, it works well with more stable neutrals like camel, navy, black, and white.

In short, these particular shades of vibrant blue are the perfect thing to herald back the light and brighten up your day and anyone else’s who crosses your path. And if you want to be really merry and bright, pair it with a bright red lipstick.

Oh I love that shade of blue, my 5th cold was born on the 22nd, a lovely Christmas present but s crappy time to have a birthday. I love it when we get to the solstice and then the light starts to return. I found the most gorgeous pair of red patent pumps in the Clarke’s sale today. They look very cheeky and I think they will go well with an all blue outfit- which is basically what I wear most of the time.
