Seeing as the Spencer wedding thread in S&B was so popular, here's a thread to discuss all royal fashion.

(If we could stick to critiquing the clothes rather than the women wearing them then that would be great!)

Meghan's LBD tonight is by Emilia Wickstead so I guess all must be forgiven!

Ohhhhhh interesting @QueenOfTheAndals !!!

SemperIdem · 10/07/2018 21:24

I was under the impression Royals aren’t allowed to accept freebies exactly because the designer would ride on the coat tails of the publicity?

SenecaFalls · 10/07/2018 21:42

Maybe the hideous Ralph Lauren she wore to that wedding has put her off the flowing and floral.

In Ralph's defense, that floral number was Oscar de la Renta. The dress she wore to the christening was Ralph Lauren.

WipsGlitter · 10/07/2018 21:50

Sorry!! My mistake.

RiverTam · 10/07/2018 22:23

Meghan does have the thinnest legs I’ve ever seen.

Do you think all these royal women like wearing killer heels? I’ve never been able to handle shoes like that but they all seem to get on fine with them.

I loved her dress today (I’m going with dark navy). Interesting to read that in the US dark colours are more acceptable for summer.

Clionba · 10/07/2018 22:31

How do they manage in those shoes? Incredibly high, very thin heels, no straps! I'd be so ungainly and /or break an ankle!

Quantumblue · 10/07/2018 22:36

She has chosen some beautifully shaped dresses. Still don't get the black or dark at all these summer events.

QueenOfTheAndals · 10/07/2018 22:38

@Clionba I want to know how they manage in those heels on grass without sinking into the lawn!

RiverTam · 10/07/2018 23:03

And on cobbles without breaking their legs!

(Fun fact - my mum used to have shares in a company called Dinky Heels. They made plastic caps to cover metal stiletto heels so they didn’t damage flooring. This was in the 50s when my mum wouldn’t even walk to the shop to buy milk without wearing her stilettos. Her feet are utterly fucked and we had to wear Startrite for years when everyone else was wearing Dolcis).

I’m a big fan of dark colours in summer.

Whitesea · 10/07/2018 23:29

I’m also a fan of dark colours in Summer. I don’t wear pastels, they do t do anything for me and that doesn’t change just because it is Summer :-)

user1457017537 · 11/07/2018 00:22

I don’t think the Royals are able to do product endorsements so I wouldn’t have thought MM could accept freebies from designers. Maybe the old customs and rules have changed though. Eyewateringly expensive wardrobe though

BeaLola · 11/07/2018 00:51

Ditto re the spindly heeled shoes. Also I read that they and celebs wear the shoes a size too big (can be seen in pictures) for some reason I can't recall but I'm wondering how when they walk the shoes don't slop on and off and look like sling backs ?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/07/2018 05:40

Glad to see Emilia Wickstead is back in the fold ( she did put out a pretty grovelly statement. )

I guess we are just going to have to get used to “ Meghan wears foreign designer, wears lots of muted shades” (except nana yellow)

I hope in the winter we see her in more jewel colours Emerald green, purple, crimson, I really liked that oxblood red leather jacket and dress she wore at the Olympic games

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/07/2018 05:40
  • invictus games
QueenOfTheAndals · 11/07/2018 07:01

When the foreign designers are the likes of Dior I can't really blame her! Kate has worn her share of Chanel and Gucci too, although Sarah Burton housecoats are her go-to outfit these days. Alexander McQueen was such a visionary that it's a shame his brand has got so bland.

I think the black/dark colours in summer is an American thing. A black sleeveless dress in any style would be considered perfectly fine for a formal or semi formal event daytime event in warm weather. Bright colours are sort of a cliche of news readers and pastels are not considered very grown up. Floral patterns are considered a bit provincial.

In similar vein, you don't see much wallpaper in the US. Or patterned curtains, or patterned carpet.

  • The deep blue-green dress on the blog looks fantastic on her. It looks like a Dublin airport/tarmac photo.

On another note - an uncle of my dad's once lived next door to the official residence of the British Ambassador to Ireland. I remember passing the massive gates from the linked blog pics.

Clionba · 11/07/2018 07:33

@QueenOfTheAndals - I often think that about Alexander McQueen. A creative visionary and his name is now associated with dozens of bland pastel coat dresses.

VanillaSugar · 11/07/2018 07:40

Businesses which hold a royal warrant supply their products to the RF FOC. However, the only people who are allowed to issue Royal warrants are HM the Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and The Prince of Wales. When Philip dies, Prince William will likely be able to issue Royal warrants on behalf of his wife.

I read this in a book which I bought from Sandringham House gift shop.

evilharpy · 11/07/2018 08:41

I love dark colours in summer, I think black looks great against a tan. I don't do pastels either.

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/07/2018 09:02

Kate used to wear a lot of Jenny Packham in the evenings and it really suited her. Perhaps she'll go back to her once she's back from maternity leave and attending more events.

Though really, what is 'maternity leave' to someone who only ever carries out a few engagements per month??

OP posts:
QueenOfTheAndals · 11/07/2018 09:07

Looking at this article on royals who attend the most events, Harry carried out more engagements last year than William. It'll be interesting to see if that will have changed by the end of this year now that William has given up his air ambulance work.

Princess Anne remains the hardest worker with 455 engagements!

EmGee · 11/07/2018 09:18

Well looking through all these pics from the last couple of days I can only say MM looks fabulous. So stylish it hurts my eyes!

Whitesea · 11/07/2018 09:19

William seems to be quite good at resting while waiting for his time to come. Considering he will be sixty plus, that is a long rest!

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/07/2018 09:21

You've got to feel for Charles in a way. At the age when most people would be retired, he's still waiting to start his job...
