Seeing as the Spencer wedding thread in S&B was so popular, here's a thread to discuss all royal fashion.

(If we could stick to critiquing the clothes rather than the women wearing them then that would be great!)

That's interesting! Thank you everyone. I was reading that Ingrid didn't take to her step mum and wasn't very nice to her, but she was young and probably missed her own mother. I can definitely see the Battenberg look in Louise!

QueenOfTheAndals · 01/07/2018 16:53

I've just read that today would've been Diana's 57th birthday. Not even 60 yet, she really was no age at all when she died.

SoNotaWendy · 01/07/2018 17:24

Wow, another three years until she would even have been sixty. She really did die so so young.

evilharpy · 01/07/2018 17:51

I wonder what she would have looked like now.

GrumbleBumble · 01/07/2018 17:59

Going back to Fergie v Diana I've said on a couple of threads before that I remember seeing a piece on TV with a newspaper or magazine editor and he quite blatantly talked about how the best picture of Diana was always chosen, best angle, nice expression etc. while they would choose pictures of Sarah Ferguson that made her look fat, ridiculous etc. The media deliberately worked to present perfect Diana and silly fat Fergie.

Nettletheelf I agree the fashion for casual clothing was quite good in the 80s. I loved NafNaf, Ton sur Ton, Chipie, Mondi and Ghost. The Royals however wore all the power suits, big shoulders and embellishments plus power hair. Diana and Fergie were Sloane Rangers. I loved the look in Miami Vice (the original one with Don Johnson) for true 80s style. You didn’t really see this in Sloan’s or in the City. Working women had a uniform and it wasn’t pretty!

QueenOfTheAndals · 01/07/2018 18:58

Do Sloans still exist? I thought Di and Fergie were the last of them.

I can definitely see the Battenberg look in Louise!

Interestingly, there was an issue when the Crown Prince (as he was at the time) wanted to marry Louise. There was a rule in Sweden that a royal had to marry a royal or drop out of the line of succession. By then, all the British-based Battenbergs had become Mountbattens and given up princely titles for noble ones. So Louise was "merely" the daughter of a lord. But it was decided in Sweden that as she had been born a princess, that was good enough.

The rule continued through the reign of Louise's husband after he became king. Carl Gustav, the present king, had to wait until he was himself king, when the rule was changed so that he could marry Sylvia, a commoner. All of his children have followed in his footsteps.

QueenOfTheAndals · 01/07/2018 20:33

His son actually married a former reality show contestant and glamour model! Imagine the furore if William or Harry had shacked up with one of the TOWIE lot??

Crown Princess Victoria, the heir to the Swedish throne married her personal trainer.

Her sister Madeleine became engaged to her long term boyfriend around the same time as Victoria. The engagement was hastily called off amid rumours that he had been cheating on her. She fled to the US to avoid the glare of the publicity and within a couple of years met and married Chris O'Neill.

The Swedish christenings are usually quite entertaining due to the antics of Madeleine and Chris's kids, especially Princess Leonore. They are televised state occasions and are all up on YouTube

They have been living in London for the past few years, but there is speculation that they may be planning a move back to Sweden. I think the kids may have to be educated in Sweden in order to stay in the line of succession.

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/07/2018 07:21

The Norwegian monarchy seems even more progressive, as their Crown Prince married a single mother. There was a fair bit of talk about it at the time but marry her he did, and nearly 20 years on they have 2 more children and seem very happy together.

Mette-Marit's son from her earlier relationship was at the centre of a security breach a few years ago when he uploaded the family's holiday snaps to Instagram and added the location!

Today is Prince Louis' christening isn't it?

Princess Sofia of Sweden is a former glamour model, but to be fair she hasn’t displayed any more than Kate ( see through dress / topless photos) Meghan ( that grilling video on YouTube) or even Sophie ( Chris Tarrant flashing her boob when she worked for Capital radio).
Sofia of Sweden is also very educated, Studied Business in the US.

I think a Royal Bride in any country who has had some life experience and is given support and instruction prior to and once in the family is bound to do much better than an aristocratic virgin (Diana) chucked in at the deep end.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/07/2018 12:08

No it’s next Monday

Quantumblue · 02/07/2018 12:12

Sofia is Sweden did a round of what can only be called soft porn pix when she was still a teenager. Very tacky and sleazy.

Clionba · 02/07/2018 12:12

Well don't look at Google images of Princess Sofía of Sweden as I did, trying to find out who she was!! I would say significantly more racy than Kate or the others!!!

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/07/2018 12:46

interesting article on Swedish Royal family.

I did see a couple of topless shots of Sofia, but most of them are in a bikini. To quote her, she said (at the time of her engagement) it was over a decade ago and those experiences shape a person.

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/07/2018 14:45

Sofia really does bear a strong resemblance to a young Queen Silvia.

Queen Maxima is on tour in the Caribbean at the moment - I quite like the turquoise dress, but I love the orange:

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5908621/Queen-Maxima-looks-stylish-vibrant-frock-Curacao.html

Fancy having to be on show only a month after your sister commits suicide Sad

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/07/2018 21:29

I think Maxima still looks sad around the eyes, but she has such an engaging personality and wonderful smile that she probably appears happier than she feels inside.

Regarding her outfits, I loved the turquoise dress, hat & especially that fabulous bag. But her shoes were awful. Style & just too much turquoise. A neutral sandal would have been best.

Thought the orange dress suited her. Not taken with the tan accessories but not sure what colour would have worked with such a strong colour

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 02/07/2018 21:36

There was also a video of Maxima wearing a kind of shantung silk chartreuse dress ( basically shiny lime green.). I think she must take a cue out of QEII book and dress to be seen.

SenecaFalls · 02/07/2018 21:36

It's a good thing that all these Dutch Royals have the coloring to look good in orange. Smile

OlennasWimple · 02/07/2018 22:09

Yes, I agree that the turquoise shoes were perhaps a step too far for the matching. I hadn't really seen orange and tan together before - I rather liked it for being unusual

Indeed, Seneca Grin

QueenOfTheAndals · 02/07/2018 22:14

No one does whacky hats like Maxima!

OP posts:
user1457017537 · 03/07/2018 07:24

I love her hats! There is a Belgian designer that does most of them.
