Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Thanks shop for alerting to 1/3 off French pharmacy. @SallieSallow is this the Bioderma you use? www.escentual.com/bioderma/bioderma098/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrvuly6Oo2gIVzmwbCh0akwdXEAQYASABEgLoZPD_BwE

SallieSallow · 07/04/2018 14:56

Yes JDSTER that's the one. It's been great during winter but I'm not sure yet if it might be a bit too heavy for me to use under makeup in summer, the weather hasn't been particularly warm here this week but I've noticed my skin has been getting oilier during the day in work so might have to rethink my routine a bit, but I'll start by cutting out day time moisturiser.

mintmagnummm · 07/04/2018 14:57

I'm wondering whether to try that bioderma spf 50 too 🤔. I know it has that cyclo ingredient but it's not right at the top (it's in my cc cream too but again not at top and it hasn't caused my usual problems I get with it when it's in the top 3 ingredients)
Those of u who use it is it greasy or sticky or shiny? Any tingling?

mintmagnummm · 07/04/2018 14:58

Although tbh I do really like my avene one as long as moisturiser goes on first. Hmm decisions decisions

SallieSallow · 07/04/2018 15:04

Mint it does feel abit tacky when first applied but sinks in/absorbs well so as long as I wait 5 mins or so before putting makeup on it has been working fine for me and not feeling greasy or tacky, & I don't get any tingling.

But see my post above as I'm not sure if it will be a good summer spf for me - I've also repurchased the bioderma nude touch as that worked really well for me last summer, it's a cross between a primer and tinted moisturiser but it's very matte and clings to any dry or flakey patches so wasn't a good winter option.

mintmagnummm · 07/04/2018 15:47

Thanks Sallie I'll probably stick with my avene one

JDSTER · 07/04/2018 15:49

Thanks sallie maybe I should try bioderma nude touch as we move into slightly better weather. What are the shades like please?

Tantpoke · 07/04/2018 16:29

JDSTER there's a quote from you on a MN best of Jeans thread saying that you love the Hush boyfriend trousers, do you still?
Because I love the look of them for the summer.

The Bioderma nude touch looks good although I was hoping my Nars with spf would be enough unless I'm out in the actual sun all day.

SallieSallow · 07/04/2018 17:36

Bioderma nude touch only comes in 3 shades, I use golden which is the darkest, the two lighter shades are light and natural I think but no idea what they're like, I do remember Bo trying one of them & said it wasn't a good match for her but which one it was I'm not sure.

JDSTER · 07/04/2018 19:09

Tant so there is Grin
I bought them last spring and lived in them. They are super comfy, quite generously sized but just sort of added to their slouchy style. I haven’t worn them for a while so I’ll look forward to getting them out again.

Tantpoke · 07/04/2018 19:31

Great Jdster I'll give them a go then, been pondering over them for a while now.

JDSTER · 07/04/2018 19:33

NARS and Hush Grin

Tantpoke · 07/04/2018 19:57

Blush Grin

mintmagnummm · 08/04/2018 08:19

Do any of you know if I can sell things on Mumsnet?? I have some solid oak furniture I want to sell and wondered if Mumsnet had a forum for this? 🤔

Tantpoke · 08/04/2018 12:08

Gumtree is your best bet and your local Friday Ads Mint possibly Ebay or Shpock

Tantpoke · 08/04/2018 12:16

I have been going for it retinol wise with pupsies Neostrata (thank you) and still using NIOD Cais am and pm and I have to say the faint red scarring on my cheeks is finally going, I am beyond delighted.

On most alternate nights I'm using the gentler TO retinoid 2% (and some days when I know I'll be at home and out of the sun daylight) bit OTT I know but it's working.
I also believe that the LRP Thermal water is making a huge difference as well to the texture of my skin, which will always be a staple now.

botemp · 08/04/2018 12:17

Sorry, I'm so behind. It appears we're all still perfectly synching up as my period arrived on Thursday but with the low blood pressure that seemed to be slowly getting better, the combo has pretty much wiped out any energy I have/had. Doing empties now, proper catchup later.

MARCH EMPTIES, TRIALS, AND PLANNED PURCHASES

ROUTINE

AM

LRP Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser
Vichy Liftactiv Vitamin C
Kiehl's Ulta Facial Toner
Bioderma Cicabio SPF50+

PM

Edenens cleansing oil (on the rare occasion followed by LRP Toleriane Hydrating or Avene Extremely Gentle cleanser)
2-3x a week Biologique Recherche P50
3x a week Medik8 R-Retinoate
Cezanne Skin Conditioner High Moist (finishing up, had bought it for body but I just keep forgetting to use it, it's Japanese hydrating toner with ceramides)
LRP Toleriane Ultra Nuit

EMPTIES:

LRP Ultra Nuit, love, have RP.

Sisley Phyto Concealer, lasted 1yr 3mths so despite the high purchase price somewhat reasonable , deeply devoted to this, lovely JDSTER sent me hers Flowers

Vichy Liftactiv, still very pleased with this, have RP.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL:

Medik8 R-Retinoate

Have reviewed it already in the first 14 days of daily use. I'm probably even more enthusiastic about it now. Using it 3x a week seems a better suit for me and it went into stratospheric when I started using P50 alongside it again. My skin hasn't looked this well rested, smooth and even in tone and texture which is quite miraculous since my health isn't all that great at the moment, but I look exceedingly healthy. Oddly the thing it's made the most difference on is my neck where I've been using it quite frugally. There was a bit of slack in my skin from the weight loss, nothing noticeable and it was slowly making its way back but this routine has accelerated it. Equally, PIH were on their way out and this routine has sped that process up.

Kevin Murphy Plumping range (for hair)

Quite happy so far, but still sort of figuring it out.

PLANNED PURCHASES:

I'm on a bit of a Asian vibe again. I blame the shelf porn! And Gothamista. My Casmarra masks are nearly finished but they're not as easy to buy so I'm considering the Dr. Jart version Gothamista mentioned in her video, they're about the same price as the Casmarras and thankfully, unlike most things Jart, without fragrance.

Also considering getting a first treatment essence in as a lighter layer for summer. Also, I'm just curious if the R-Retinoate+Vit C+P50 holy trinity is improved by a bit of fermented ingredients as my skin has always responded very well to those.

I need a new SPF as I'm not convinced I'll enjoy wearing the Cicabio in the midst of summer as I mostly go bare faced (just concealer under the eyes) these days and I think it may read as too shiny. Haven't made up my mind though, probably will just end up getting the Kose again in the end.

SPECIAL MENTION:

The Chantecaille brow gel. I'd bought this on the back of my undying love for the mascara and containing the same hair growing peptides. It's kind of shit as a brow gel though so I never really used it, determined to use it up I've been using it at night and crikey, I haven't had this much hair growth on the brows in years, I may need to get them done Shock Will probably look into the others one now, was it rapidbrow that you used Enid?

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 08/04/2018 13:54

Tant thank you.

Bo where's the Vichy thermal water in ur routine????

zoClueless · 08/04/2018 17:38

Interesting reading the thoughts on the NARS TM from a couple days ago. I know dr Sam rates NARS so it’s been on my mind to try that one at some point. Will need to wait until something I currently have runs out though as I don’t want to add another to the collection - I worry they will all go out of date before I can use them up! I look forward to one day finding THE base for me so I can just own the one...

Pupsiecola · 08/04/2018 17:49

I am so behind. We're in Rome. Hardly been to Italy. Anything to look out for?

SallieSallow · 08/04/2018 17:54

Zo I chucked out three unopened Tarte foundations earlier this week Blush they must have been 2-3 years old. I also chucked loads of TO stuff, some of that was also unopened - I was going to offer here but again most was at least a year old and I don't think TO stuff has a good shelf life. Hence the self imposed buying ban unless I run out of something.

Bo I'm using the rapidbrow but not seen any significant results yet, I have a few hairs sprouting at the tops near my nose but they are sparse so look odd, nothing much doing with the tails yet. I'll give it a chance as reviews suggest it can take a couple of months, but might look into that chantecaille one next. I think I'll definitely have to swap cicabio spf out for the nude touch one very soon, my skin is already showing signs of increased oiliness & the weather isn't even warm yet here. And I hope you feel better soon Flowers

JDSTER · 08/04/2018 19:16

Good to see you back Bo. Are you still/ have you been back to GP? I’m glad you’re making good use of the Sisley concealer. Interesting update on Medik 8 retinoid- glad it’s working so well for you. I’m definitely not going to try Cicabio this season given Sallie and your comments. I don’t need anything to add to my oiliness thank you very much.
Grin at Mint’s challenge re where is Vichy in your routine.

SallieSallow · 08/04/2018 19:28

Hope you're having a great time Pupsie I loved Rome but it's ten years since I was there, we just got tickets for one of those hop on hop off open top buses and used that to see all the famous sights. I can't remember where we ate or drank or the names of anywhere really other than the main tourist places though - and I didn't do any shopping Grin

mintmagnummm · 08/04/2018 19:53

GrinJDSTER i sound like the routine police

mintmagnummm · 08/04/2018 20:04

I've been getting little whiteheads the last few days 🤔.

Can't wait for my NARS sample to arrive! Hope they definitely sent it!
