Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

Hope you find something lovely Enid. Sounds like a cocktail dress for your figure/shape would be the best if it's a country posh hotel wedding.

Think I've got jumpsuits on the brain as just bought a gorgeous one and really want to wear it now!!! small pleats all over, wide leg, Grecian style. Have a lovely image of myself in my head with heels and a fabulous clutch Grin

EnidButton · 10/05/2018 15:06

Maybe I should try a jumpsuit? There are lots of really nice ones around. Easy to wear again too. (I'm 5'6 size 10, hourglass shape) Drawn towards the pencil dresses now though.

I keep thinking I'll turn up all fancy and everyone else will be in maxi dresses and flats or jeans and a top and I'll feel daft.

SophieLion · 10/05/2018 15:34

You sound gorgeous looking Enid Smile

I'm not an hour-glass shape at all so probably not the best person to advise but perhaps something which clinches in at the waist to emphasise your shape? Then a straight or slightly-flared/looser skirt (making sense?). On top perhaps a scoop neck or sweet-heart neckline?!

I LOVE my new jumpsuit but there's lots out there so I guess it's a case of finding the right one for your shape.

I doubt maxi dresses will be there unless it's super formal black tie wedding or summer wedding Greek style on an island Grin
Of course I could be completely wrong on all this!!! Think I'll let someone else try to help now Wink

EnidButton · 10/05/2018 15:43

Yes that's what I'm hoping to find but I think everyone has nabbed all the good dresses already for summer weddings. I only had 3 weeks notice.

I'm a bit overly worrying today. Wishing I never had my hair cut off and all sorts of trivial things that shouldn't matter. I just really want to look nice.

EnidButton · 10/05/2018 15:43

Sorry, thank you btw Cake

TantricTwist · 10/05/2018 16:50

enid yes definitely a cocktail dress, sounds like you will look gorgeous whatever you go in Smile.

botemp · 10/05/2018 17:10

Don't worry, Enid, you're not being daft. Fellow hourglass so I know all too well how we can go overdressed very quickly, even when wearing quite casual things, so the somewhat formal challenge is always a hard one to get right. I personally wouldn't pursue a jumpsuit, they're like unicorn tears to find that flatter and not go potato sack in the middle. A casual one can work as they often have an elastic waist so you basically wear it unstretched but a formal one in a non-suffocating material is hard to find. Never mind the palaver if you need to use the bathroom.

Pencil or sheath dresses are always a good bet. A good solid colour can help alleviate the formality of certain pieces. I remember you mentioning once (or it was someone else, apols if not) that you had Liz Taylor's colouring so a strong blue would be really nice for you, I think.

Ps the models will be a bit taller so the shorter dress will come down to your knee

JDSTER · 10/05/2018 18:12

In my head, Enid looks best in the first Coast dress Grin

MrsDOnofrio · 10/05/2018 18:41

In my head Enid is 5’1” and a very tiny pencil shape who favours a long brown straight skirt with a long sleeved dark beige silk shirt so to find out she’s much taller and hourglass shaped is a bit of a shock! Grin

The new Enid would look great in the second Coast dress.

mintmagnummm · 10/05/2018 18:42

Curious to know how you all picture me to look?? I'm scared lol

botemp · 10/05/2018 19:07

Dangerous question, mint Wink

I have more an image of someone's personifying energy vaguely connected to mentioned features, a bit like cartoon characters. So a bit like this picture but I imagine you're probably a bit slighter with a longer face without the freckle overload, but energy wise it feels 'right'

I'm rubbish with clothes and fashion so no help on the dresses - and I hate wearing them so unless it's something super formal I always go for the old reliable option of smart (but not work like) trousers/nice top combo.

Enid I also picture you as very Elizabeth Taylor like, I think any of the dressed linked would suit you but I can 'see' you in the first one.

Mint I've always 'seen' you as a redhead too, and imagine your little boy as having red hair as well.

I've been using my frezyderm over Vichy 89 (no moisturiser) and am really liking it.

EnidButton · 10/05/2018 19:51

Thank you! I really like all of those, especially the first two and the third one is one I liked already but is sold out in my size. I could see if it's in the TC store and go there to try it. Really like the first one, not sure about black near my face though. All very good though I'm impressed!

Not so keen on the last one because of the lace and the silver silky one has slightly too much going on on top but honestly very close to what I was searching for so I'm going g to comb through Reiss and Coast and have pinned the ones you've linked to.

Good to know the level of fancy that I'm aiming for now too. Smile So grateful, thank you. I have seen a blue dress like that bo, I'll try to find it again.

Are skin coloured invisible tights acceptable? I suppose no-one will see them if they're good.

MrsD I've never worn brown and beige in my life but she sounds quite sophisticated so I'll take it. Grin

I don't have Liz T's eyes or face unfortunately but similar skin and hair colouring.

I'm trying to think what everyone else looks in my head now. 🤔

EnidButton · 10/05/2018 19:52

I do really like the first one. I might get it to try it.

botemp · 10/05/2018 19:59

Just for the record, I do not look like Miss Trunchbull Grin

Normally not a fan of the skincoloured tights in summer but I think they're fine for nights especially in a low denier. You could also consider fine knit fishnets but I do think that cool toned skins pull that off better than warm toned.

I imagine Enid to have a very quiet beauty, best observed when she's unaware and she'll probably deny all knowledge of it when you mention it Wink

OP posts:
MrsDOnofrio · 10/05/2018 20:37

Unfortunately I think I have a touch of the Miss Trunchbull Sad

mintmagnummm · 10/05/2018 20:46

Bo and Sallie that's really made me chuckle! Yes I'm a redhead but I'm more blonde (on top anyway) the girl in your pic bo looks quite scary!!
My little boy is white blonde!

JDSTER · 10/05/2018 20:54

I knew the first dress was good for you Enid Wink. M&S do some good nude tights ‘illusion’ is the colour. On me (fair of skin) they look very natural and skin toned but better, iyswim.

Loving the picture by Bo of the essence of mint Grin

TantricTwist · 10/05/2018 21:25

You're welcome enid it was a pleasure shopping for pretty dresses even if I'm not the one wearing them.

I very much like the first one best and just added the others as they all have long sleeves.

mintmagnummm · 10/05/2018 21:35

This is more my essence.....

Mint GrinGrinGrin

SophieLion · 11/05/2018 05:51

GrinGrin at Mint's essence and at Miss Trunchbull Bo.

Enid, it sounds like you might be similar colouring to me (very dark hair and white skin, cool colours) so black should be ok for you (if you are indeed the same colouring as me). I don't wear brown or beige - looks terrible on me.

Hhmmm Bo, I think did did find the unicorn tears jumpsuit but in my excitement I didn't think about the toilet issue!!! Perhaps not too many drinks whilst wearing it GrinWink

peonylover22 · 11/05/2018 06:28

Enid not sure how you feel about the sleeve situation on this but I have been hankering after this cocktail dress. Think the colour would be great on you, and waist should flatter an hour glass figure
Nothing much useful to add on the skincare front from me. My skin had a total hissy fit a couple of days ago but I think that was a combination of first couple of days of cycle with effects of hasty smearing of child Amber solaire on my face so I could quickly chop down a tree. Getting back to normal now.
