🐌 Fantastic Skincare: The One Where Sallie Swallows Dermaplaned a Lion Named Fabio

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

MARCH 2018: We managed to live through hairmageddon without any major losses. We welcomed some new inquisitive faces, reunited with some much missed old ones, and are delighted at the thought of a baby snail on its way. Now, all we need is the weather to start cooperating and match the levity in our moods…

There's a transparent version and a colour version. Also a SPF 30 and 50 one for both. When it got a lot of buzz it was only available from Beauty Mart who sells it quite cheaply but charges a lot for European delivery. Curious to know what the Greek prices are, the suggested RRP seems to be 23,50 and it's about a euro cheaper on Amazon Germany but I assume it gets discounted quite a bit locally. I'd love some pics of the INCIs for the 30 and 50 without colour, please Flowers

I don't know much about the rest of the brand, INCIs aren't listed on their site so you'd have to photograph them for anything you're interested.

Aside question, how do the Greeks pronounce Frezyderm? It doesn't sound Greek at all to my ears, furthest thing from an expert though. Any nice Greek Easter recipes btw, I've made Torta Pasquale from Italy in the past but could do with something new in the repertoire provided it doesn't contain meat, fish is fine though.

X-post with Sophie Blush

Ooh tanks, Pupsie, I wonder if Tank Girl is on Netflix...

I don't know what it is about Cerave but instinctively whenever I've examined the INCI I thought it wouldn't suit my skin. Maybe it's the Ceramides as I had a bad reaction to the Decubal version of the PM lotion that had no ingredients that would be potentially irritating. I even tried a smidge of it the other day, mixed in with my Toleriane ultra nuit as that was suddenly running really low and a minor product reaction spot showed up the very next day. Thankfully the old P50 solved that in one go, but for myself I'll be steering away from Cerave/Ceramides.

Any pointers on pre teen skin? I have spent a fortune on DD (11) who has a spotty forehead, dry skin generally and swims 4 times a week so the chlorine and water exposure is an issue.
Nothing has really helped so far, LRP effeclar starter set was a disaster. Made her face so red and sore. Have gone through Boots spot treatment shelves and nothing has helped much. Currently using ceptahil wash and dermotologica treatment gel with a ceptahil moisturiser, which is not making things worse.
Drs aren't interested as too mild to be acne, and no beauty therapist will suggest anything as she so young!

SophieLion · 24/03/2018 13:52

What do your product reaction spots look like Bo? Still trying to figure out where mine come from.... ie how do you know it's from a product and not a coincidence? ( perhaps you're a lucky person who doesn't get spots EnvyEnvy that's envy!!!)

Pupsiecola · 24/03/2018 13:52

Thanks Bo. I've been using the Cerave night lotion for months and months and am fine with that. Very strange.

Yes, tank driving was my bday present a few months back and I finally got to do it today.

botemp · 24/03/2018 14:17

Sounds like fun, Pupsie! Happy belated birthday Cake

Sophie, with me, spots like to announce themselves, brewing for days, putting pressure under my skin, sometimes painfully so, before finally arriving and then acting like stubborn bastards. Whereas reaction spots show up out of nowhere and seem less resilient, they're very close to the surface of the skin and they break easily. They're also usually in odd places, my cheek or temple where I only really get spots around the chin area.

I don't get the former very often though, it's tied in with my hormones being quite stable for the past few years but I'd probably be a bit more susceptible to them if I wasn't on daily SPF and regular acid exfoliation. With the addition of a retinoid in place they never really get a chance, though I suspect if my hormones have another round of pulling everything off balance I'm not 100% insured with my routine, but it will be far more manageable than without the actives.

turkey, ah that sounds frustrating. I think you may need to curate two separate routines, one (or two really) for before/after swimming, and then a normal evening/morning routine (obviously no need to double up in the AM or PM if it's close together). What is it like now, does she only wash off the chlorine in the showers currently or do a full routine?

I think realistically her spots are less a predominantly hormonal thing and more likely due to the chlorine washing away essential fatty acids in her skin, resulting in severe dehydration which leads to oiliness, clogged pores and ultimately spots as a result. The LRP Effaclair range would, in that case, be far too harsh as it is similarly stripping thus exasperating the issue. Similarly, I'd be looking at a gentler cleanser than Cetaphil, something like LRP Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser (but still only available from France, I think) and a good barrier cream to apply before swimming and something a touch lighter with skin restoring ingredients for normal moisturising needs. Some form of hydrating product will probably also be helpful. The Superdrug Simply Pure Hydrating Serum and the Moisturiser would probably be a good one to try.

The thread is moving on at a pace since yesterday. I posted on old thread so apologies if you’ve read this already.

Enid I’ve had those bliss gloves before. A friend got me them for Christmas a lot of years ago now so I’ve since chucked them. They’re good in that they work by leaving you hands very smooth after use,but there was something a bit weird about putting your hands in cold jelly like gloves.

Tsmummy I’d like to try that spf if you don’t mind. Bioderma’s been on my to try list.

Talking of Easter eggs I went to an egg decorating session last night with a friend. A local chocolatier was hosting it. My design was pretty rubbish but I’m sure the children will happily scoff it.

JDSTER · 24/03/2018 14:56

seventytwo I’ve got TO azelaic but I never really found a use for it in my routine. Yes Bo it’s a silicone heavy formula much like TO Vit C higher strength in silicone formula. VH aren’t going to be stocking TO any longer, they’re just selling off what they’ve got left, hence items out of stock.

joz BR purchased from Liberty in London.

lone those shouty caps/claps were indeed for you with regards to tret containing product Grin

Tantpoke · 24/03/2018 15:22

Turkeyboots I wonder if its worth your DD applying something thickish to her skin whilst swimming such as LRP Cicaplast or Dermaswim?? to help prevent the chlorine penetrating her skin so much.
Obvs she'll have to wash her face straight after with something practical for a pool shower that also does the job, some kind of thicker gentle creamy cleanser in a tube. Maybe Superdrugs Vit E or simply pure cleanser.
I personally would treat her skin as sensitive and dry for now and not spotty due to the chlorine with regards to products.

Tantpoke · 24/03/2018 15:27

Pupsie I am finding that anything with HA in it really stings after stronger retinol use so it could be that in the Cerave.

turkeyboots · 24/03/2018 16:01

Thanks Tant and Bo, that makes sense. Dermaswim looks like a clever idea.

And the Velvet Touch SpF sounds great for me!

mintmagnummm · 24/03/2018 16:22

Bo how dare you shove me 😜

Sophie I've been to Crete, and Zante so far. I'd like to go to Rhodes too. Is there anywhere in Greece you would recommend as a honeymoon destination?
My reaction spots sound similar to bo's I get lots of tiny whiteheads that can literally be scratched off!

Tantpoke · 24/03/2018 16:23

Turkey it's probably worth getting Cetraben or Diprabase actually to apply before and after.

Lonesurvivor · 24/03/2018 17:02

Shouty claps does sound better, we can use them instead as our seal of approvalGrin
I definitely wasn't asking for advice for dd her skin is too precious to me to use a product that's been hanging around so long, I'm not planning on using it either, I work in a pharmacy so know it should be stored in a fridge.
I was kinda laughing at how when this was prescribed I was clueless to what retinol actually also did for agingBlush

Anyway my little indeed haul arrived today and I got CeraVe and LRP Anthelios spray for top ups during the day.

JDSTER - thanks for confirming that. I was hoping someone might have tracked down an online supplier, I'm over 3 hours from KX station by train so it's not tremendously convenient or cheap! Never mind - I'll make a day of it, stock up & see the sights while I'm at it.

JDSTER · 24/03/2018 19:14

I was there just the other week joz and could have got you some 😔

pupsie/Tant interesting about stinging issue. I sometimes find LRP double repair moisturiser (niacinamide and ceramides) can sting post retinoid. I tend to apply it first and wait maybe 30 mins and use differin as last step before bed. I don’t get any stinging that way. pupsie, how’s the smelly NIOD voicemail? Grin

Pupsiecola · 24/03/2018 19:42

I've not tried it yet JDSTER as I've not been wanting to add anything else in as I've upped the Redermic. Will keep you posted...

I've not had any stinging when using the DE HA. Strange.

miffy2 · 24/03/2018 20:18

@Lonesurvivor, I was in a large Boots today (Dundrum) and the Hand Chemistry range is gone from the shelves :( :( They still have it online but it was always handy picking it up at a discount in Boots (€27 is a little too steep).

Lonesurvivor · 24/03/2018 20:54

Ah that's crap miffy if I spot anymore of that one in ours on clearance I'll pick it up and post to you. I should've thought of you when I saw it. I still have one of the green ones Hylaronic or something I think if it's any good to you?

Jozxyqk · 24/03/2018 21:23

No worries, JDSTER - I've not been to London in a couple of years anyway. It just seems a bit silly that it's so difficult to get hold of a skincare product.

miffy2 · 24/03/2018 21:28

Not to worry, Lone, I actually found a large one in a pump on the deciem site so I might get that next month! I have the green HA ones too, just don't like it as much as the Pro Repair. I use the HS mist and body gel...funny how that it is the Deciem brand I like most after all the TO hype!

Lonesurvivor · 24/03/2018 22:45

www.meagherspharmacy.ie/top-brands/handchemistry/

miffy I follow Joanne from Meagher pharmacy on Snapchat. They recently announced they're not stocking TO so I checked and they have hand chemistry too.
They often do online 20% off too so worth keeping an eye on.

Lonesurvivor · 24/03/2018 22:46

*they ARE stocking TO.
This phone of mine randomly adds in words and letters!

EnidButton · 24/03/2018 23:16

I hope our Boots doesn't stop stocking the hand cream. I wasn't going into town tomorrow but tempted to go and check now. I have a full boxed one in but still.

Tsmummy08 · 25/03/2018 08:23

Pupsie Yes I get stinging with the Cerave cleanser - I won't be repurchasing it, and also with some other HA products like the Superdrug serum.

JDSTER It's the Hydrabio moisturiser that I've got looking for a new home - I was able to send the Photoderm back to Feelunique as they included a "try it out" sample. I do have some of the sample left actually, but it's been open a couple of weeks so if you'd like it I could send that but it's probably not the freshest!
